When Sony first announced that the studio was scrapping Sam Raimi’s in-development fourth Spider-Man film in favor of a franchise reboot, many fans were cautiously optimistic about re-launching Marvel’s famed web-slinger so soon after his blockbuster trilogy. However, this year’s The Amazing Spider-Man proved itself a successful addition to the franchise, earning over $750 million worldwide and mostly positive reviews.

The film smartly avoided including the same cast of characters as Raimi’s films. However, as astute comic book fans know, the relationship between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) does not end well. So it was no surprise when director Marc Webb brought on The Descendants star Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Peter’s eventual love interest, for the upcoming sequel.

Woodley’s casting is sure to invite comparisons to Kirsten Dunst (who previously played the character in the heavily-criticized¬†Spider-Man 3).¬†However, in a recent interview with MTV News, Dunst voiced her approval of the casting move. Here’s what she had to say:

“I really like her too, a lot. I’ve met her a few times and we’ve talked about health foods, we know some of the same people, she’s really into finding springs and natural water and she’ll go get her water and things like that. I’ve done that before, and we’ve talked about that. I think she’s a sweetheart and such a good actress. I’m happy. If I had to pick someone, I’m happy she’s following in my shoes.”

The validation of the previous star to play the role will surely not keep Spidey fans from endlessly critiquing Woodley’s performance. However, Webb’s apparent desire to keep the continuity of Peter Parker’s love life more in line with the source material (and Green Goblin nowhere to be seen, at least not yet) means that Mary Jane will probably have at least a film or two of development, allowing viewers more time to get acquainted with the character before she becomes a more central figure in the series’ over-arching mythology.

What do you think about Shailene Woodley playing Mary Jane Watson? Do you prefer her to Kirsten Dunst? Sound off in the comments.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (not the official title) swings into theaters on May 2nd, 2014.

  1. Jane Levy should play MJ. Shailene Woodley looks nothing like MJ (although she is a good actress). While Jane Levy is both a good actress and looks just like MJ!

    • that’d be hilarious, Gwen and Mary Jane looking literally identical

  2. I’ve never seen/read so many Whiny, self-centered, know it all comments in my life about who should play what in a movie. 1. Kirsten Dunst played her role based on how it was written and it was written as a supporting actress not as a leading actress. She was written to support Tobey, her MJ was written to support Peter not to be his equal. So, she only needed to be saved that’s how she was written. Kirsten Dunst is actually a good actress watch any of her other roles ( Interview with a Vampire for example or The Virgin Diaries) the MJ role just wasn’t demanding. 2. Shailene Woodley is attractive and you have to consider her characters she’s played. She doesn’t “look like a bombshell” because she’s not big breasted and that’s all these whiny fan boys are talking about. She has a younger, prettier face than Kirsten did during her run as MJ. Most of what I’ve seen in pictures of Shailene she’s gorgeous but that’s just personal opinion and everyone is entitled to their own. Wait until the studio and make people get a hold of her for her more blockbuster level role. Right now her crew doesn’t make her up to look like a bombshell because that’s not the kind of role she’s been playing, she’s been playing a high school teenager how many high schoolers do you people look at are bombshells? Not to mention there’s no record of what MJ was like in high school except in Ultimate Spider-man and even there she wasn’t a bombshell. So stop whining, let the movie be completed Shailene’s role in the next sequel is very small you’ll see Gwen more. Wait until Sony gives you more glimpses of their new MJ before casting judgement remember everyone downed The Amazing Spider-man before it was released and while no it didn’t break records which it wasn’t expected to, it still held its own in a market where people were sour because they wanted the first crew back, 750 million world wide is not a horrible number especially being a first installment to a trilogy project.

    • @kevin I love how you say “everyone is entitled to their own opinion” in the same breath as “stop whining”. Holy hell man, you take yourself far too seriously to be so contradicting.

The MJ role is a significant one in the Spider-Man world. Obviously it’s going to be a hotly contested subject. So “stop whining” about people expressing their opinion, and just get on with it.

And I agree with anyone suggesting Jane Levy would make an excellent MJ Watson. I’m not a fan of the other girl, but hopefully it translates to the screen better than I imagine it.

Frankly, I think they’re obviously too eager to push Gwyn Stacy out of the series. Leave that character alone. I think we can all agree there is no such thing as too much Emma Stone.

      • 1. We are human, contradiction is a part of our nature for example:” holy hell”,”you take yourself way too serious to be so contradicting” I don’t think I need to explain the contradiction in both of those for you.
        2. Whining and voicing your opinion are two totally different things but, a guy like you who has to resort in taking this stuff personally while still telling a stranger they take themselves way too serious should know that.

  3. Of course the first worst Mary Jane would approve of the second and even worse choice for Mary Jane. I looked up Jane Levy and Marvel Fan is right. JANE LEVY FOR MJ NOT SHAILENE WOODLEY!

  4. As Marvel Fan said, Jane Levy looks perfect for MJ, but she looks too much like Emma Stone.

  5. I’m clearly one of the only people who actually like Kirsten as MJ. Oh well.

  6. I think Shai would be a great MJ. Shes obviously a really good actress (The Descendents) and she’s naturally pretty, something I think Hollywood could use a bit more of. She has some great movies coming out within the next year as well, including The Spectacular Now and Divergent. Jane Levy would not work as MJ. She just doesn’t have what it takes and she wouldn’t fit the part as Andrew’s love interest. Obviously MJ is a really important character but you have to concider Gwen Stacy’s role in the franchise. While the previous franchise chose to completely bypass Gwen Stacy’s role in the story, the Amazing Spider-Man did a great job of really sticking to the original storyline. So I don’t think Gwen’s character should be pushed aside so quickly. Especially when she’s played by Emma Stone, someone who I think we can all agree was born to play the role and play it alongside Andrew Garfield, with whom she has amazing chemistry on and off screen. At the end of the day, I trust Marc Webb to work his usual magic. No doubt I think we’ll happy about his judgment in the end.

  7. i love kirsten dunst. but i dont like the spiderman 3… hope that the amazing spiderman dot turn out to be like the old spiderman

  8. Kirsten Dunst was a horrible MJ, and those Spidey movies were pretty bad. The Amazing Spider-Man movies, now with Marvel creating them rather than an outside company, are great and Emma Stone is a great Gwen Stacy. Shailene is sweet-seeming but she is no MJ, the MJ from the comics is much less innocent-seeming. I don’t know how Jane Levy is, but a quick google search makes her look pretty good for the role. Or, Emma Stone with red hair heehee.

  9. Omg no please shailene is not that good of an actress especially for a marvel movie

  10. Karen Gillan for MJ please! haha

  11. @BlackKittyCat Well I disagree about the old movies being bad. I prefer them to the new ones and I think they will stand the test of time.
