Amazing Spider Man 2 Harry Osborn Green Goblin Image Amazing Spider Man 2: New Green Goblin Revealed & Explained

By the time Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrives, it could bring with it some of the worst kept secrets of any upcoming superhero movie. Even before the sequel was announced, there was speculation that director Marc Webb could be steering the franchise toward a showdown between Spider-Man and the super-villain team, The Sinister Six – and that’s been unofficially confirmed several times over.

A recent banner spotted overseas showed some of the first official images of Jamie Foxx’s Electro (the supposed central villain of the film) and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino (in mechanical form) taking on Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) with the help of a third villain… one riding a familiar-looking glider device.

Speculation has raged ever since that the third figure in the banner is the new version of The Green Goblin – but whether that Goblin would be Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) or his father Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) was a matter of mystery.

…But maybe not so mysterious anymore:

[Update: High-Res Banner Released]

The design of the character (whomever is playing him) would seem to fall in-between the  super-serum humanoid form of the classic Green Goblin, the gene-spliced monstrosity of the Ultimate Spider-Man continuity – and of course, James Franco in Spider-Man 3.

Oddly enough, the face on that Goblin figure looks most like franchise star Andrew Garfield; but taking that out of consideration, the smart money says that the figure is indeed Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn. While there’s been back-and-forth rumoring that DeHaan’s Harry Osborn could be the new Goblin or a new version of Venom (being groomed for a possible spinoff), the scales got tipped to the Goblin side when ASM2 actress Felicity Jones let slip that her mysterious character (possibly Black Cat?) would be playing “The Goblin’s girlfriend” in the movie. Even though she didn’t specify, it was a pretty sure bet that she was referring to Harry Osborn (Norman would just be creepy, really).

Screen Rant sat down with DeHaan multiple times over the last few months, and we took the opportunity to touch on the Goblin rumors. Here’s what he said:

Amazing Spider Man 2 Peter Parker Harry Osborn 570x353 Amazing Spider Man 2: New Green Goblin Revealed & Explained

He’s doing stunt work in the film – so Harry WILL see some kind of action:

Dane DeHaan: Yeah, it was a really exciting challenge of a part and it wasn’t only a mental challenge, it was a physical challenge as well. I underwent a really big training regime, the days were long and that kind of thing. I don’t want to get into too much detail because I think there’s a lot in the movie that’s going to be really exciting for people to not know going into it.

When I asked him directly about  Jones’s “Goblin’s girlfriend” mention, DeHaan tried to play coy, but the evidence was still there:

Dane DeHaan: Well Harry is a big womanizer you know so anybody that thinks they’re Harry’s love interest is wrong if she said that! [Laughs]… The Goblin’s girlfriend? That’s gross if she’s dating a Goblin, that’s disgusting. Not to judge… [Smiles]

To complete this picture, we’ve had viral teases from director Marc Webb himself; one image depicted a locker that (in comic lore) contains a powerful (Goblin-related?) formula; the other image depicted a ‘gene chamber’ and the ominous tease of a gun and Harry-sized tee-shirt on the floor. Taken altogether, both images seem to suggest a scenario where someone (Harry) follows  up a major breakdown or violent act (killing his father?) by taking some kind of serum and hitting the gene chamber… to become the Green Goblin.

As I said: unless there is some kind of additional twist, or the banner image is somehow misleading, this Harry/Goblin business is likely going to end up being one of the worst-kept secrets of the ASM2 production. Moreover, that banner is going to spark all kinds of Spider-Man 3 fears.

That final installment of Sam Raimi’s trilogy suffered from an overcrowding of villains – Goblin, Venom and Sandman. Unless screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and and Jeff Pinkner have this thing tightly streamlined (and there’s evidence that Norman Osborn’s gene experimentation could do just that) then that “Spider-Man 3 itis” could be a real threat.

Does that Goblin figure look like Harry Osborn to you? Could it be Chris Cooper in the Goblin suit? Are there too many villains in this film – or is this just warm-up to a Sinister Six showdown?

  1. too many villians lol

    • Again.

  2. I want to see more images and see it on the screen before I judge it too harshly. With that said, I really, really hope this isn’t the final design. What has the MCU taught potential CBMs? Audiences love the outlandish and won’t even bat an eye at over-the-top costumes.

    • I truly wish the X-Men would dress in their yellow/blue fatigues, especially Wolverine. Days of Future Past looks like a bunch of Batmen running around.

  3. Meh….It looks like an updated version of Harry’s costume in Spider Man 3. I’ll reserve my judgement up until I see the film.

    • dude what are you talking about this is totally different from sm3 this is a cross between ultimate and amazing universe which is actually a cool idea better than toy goblin(seriously in spiderman 1 he looks like a old model plastic doll)

      • I was talking about the costume -_-

      • Have you actually seen the Ultimate Goblin? It’s a badass cross between Hulk, Abomination and the original Goblin. This garbage looks ridiculous. I agree with Taona… it looks like Raimi’s pathetic Goblin crossed with an Orc and Jack Frost. Why be so damned afraid of pushing the envelope? This is Sci-Fi.

      • +1

  4. I don’t know. That image looks ALOT like Andrew Garfield. Maybe it’s possible we are seeing some variation of the clone saga. Remember that oddly long hold on Peter’s bloody handprint in the first movie? Probably not but man that ‘goblin’ looks like Garfield.

    • i think rizzle may have figured it out that they are clones cause i agree they look alot like garfield

    • I don’t know about it being a clone, but DAMN you got a good point about it looking a lot like Garfield!

    • I’m still waiting on the hi res trailer to be sure but I’m with you on it. Seems very plausible and that poster looks too much like Garfield. Especially since Sony voiced that they want spin-offs. Clones are definitely one way acheive that.

    • +1

  5. some people like the old spider man and some like the new one. i like the new spider man and i think they did a great job on the new movie. i dont know if putting more than one villian in the movie is good but i guess if they are gonna have 6 in spider man 3 or 4 they have to get ready for it now lol

  6. I actually kinda like the new look. I’m still more focused on how much I don’t like the design of The Rhino though.

    • He looks like he’s seconds away from forming Voltron.

  7. i keep on looking at the picture and it just looks too much like garfield. i may be wrong but like rizzle said its problay a clone from the bloody handprint from the first movie.

  8. Looks like Andrew Garfield to me as well. Oh well, is this even a confirmed ‘official’ image from the film?

  9. The only thing that matters to me is that Harry isn’t Venom. I’m open to everything else I’ve read so far.

    • ^^^ This.

      and then this VVV

      • Truth in Journalism was AWFUL. Sure is low budget but it’s still CRAP!

    • Same here

  10. The figure honestly looks like Electro to me. The hands look blue and while the closer image doesn’t have a head on the character, the bigger poster looks like Electro’s hoodie.

    • Silly Dazz, click the picture!

  11. This doesn’t look official at all to me. It looks like someone took a picture of Andrew Garfield and photoshopped him.

Parts of the image might be close to the final design of some of these characters but I think that Goblin part is a complete fabrication and the final design will be quite different.

  12. ScreenRant never reported on it, probably because Sony was quick to take punitive action against those who did, but leaked story boards came out a week ago showing Harry transforming into the Goblin. Oh and yes they were real, the detail in the drawings was remarkable and Sony had all reports removed undergrounds of “copywrite infringement” pretty much confirming their validity. Anyone who thinks it’s Norman or it’s Peter is kidding themselves. The leaked trailer from Russia also confirms goblin has a big role.

  13. Oh and for everyone who thinks this is fake, he looks the same in the trailer it’s not.

  14. 1) Looks like their going with a mix of Spider-Man 3′s New Goblin & the ultimate goblin just by the armor & his pointy ears & pale face.
    2) I find it funny everyone’s main problem with Spiderman was “To many villains” not enough character development YET are excited for this movie.
    3) Rhino’s story will not be short either.
    4) Am I the only one who thinks its to ridiculous they are already planning a 4th film AND spinoff without even releasing the 2nd film yet? !?!THEY DONT CARE ABOUT THE STORY, they OBVISOULY wanna cash in on the recent avengers “multiple heros” success & don’t want the film rights going back to Marvel.

    • You’re not alone. I find it hilarious that people even love TASM a thousand times over the Raimi films to begin with.

ONE mediocre reboot automatically makes it better than a whole trilogy? Let alone Spidey 2, one of the best sequels ever made? I’m sure this one will be just as mediocre if nit moreso, yet we’ll see people say its better than Raimi’s Spidey 2 because “the newer, more attractive-er guy is Spider-Man in it!” and crap like that.

The fact that Sony is naive enough to think they’ll go up to FOUR films, truly means they’re throwing actual storytelling out the window in favor of ca$hing in on Spider-Man as a brand.

As an eternal fan of Raimi’s trilogy all I can do is re-watch the original Spidey films, and be thankful they were made with an actual passion.

      • I agree. I’ve been seeing the designs of Rhino and with the russian leaked trailer it only continues to further my concerns about this movie. I like the Harry/Goblin look but yes, it does look like the Harry/Goblin look from Spiderman 3. Also, I love Dane DeHaan but I just don’t see a Harry. The way they made him out to look I guess bothers me.
I am just not all that excited for this movie. I have more concerns than anything else. For all the issue that was Raimi, his films did at least provide some good storytelling. I am not saying there were issues but at least the films looked like it had some passion behind them. I just don’t see that with this movie and especially from the leaked trailer. It just looks eh to me

        • As far as the designs of the Goblin and Spider-man go, it does seem very similar to the Raimi movies. I really get the feeling that they are piggybacking on those successful movies, and imagine a lot of that comes from studio pressure and mistrust of Webb. I remember watching the trailer for ASM and thinking how it could easily appear to be a trailer for a Spider-man movie that continued from SM3. It didn’t really talk about an origin, but rather Peter discovering secrets about his parents. With the characters like Aunt May and Gwen it could have looked like a new chapter.

      • Well said EggU.

      • Glad to know there are others who feel the same. ASM made me buy a copy of SM3, a movie that was disappointing but still entertaining. And I’ve watched the Raimi movies plenty of times.

What gets me is that, on it’s own ASM is a really poorly told story. It has all kinds of extraneous plot threads that are left dangling, and then only partially tells a lot of the important story elements. The whole Uncle Ben/responsibility story really told. The movie relies on prior knowledge (the Raimi movies) but is supposed to be it’s own thing.

So I’m not confidant that Webb can handle one or two main characters and plots, much less four or six. But I’ll probably go see it anyway.

      • Hell, Spider- Man 2 is the best superhero film I’ve seen.

        • Are you serious…Well we all have different opinions lol!

          • Well, if you don’t like spider-man 2 you are surely in the minority.

            • I agree. I loved Spider man 2 and is still my favorite. TASM was okay but did have a lot of flaws in the plots/storyline department. I am afraid that with this sequel they will compensate the storytelling with added enemies. I really want this rebooted franchise to succeed but as of right now I am not all that impressed.

            • I like Spiderman 2 but it wasnt my ALL TIME FAVORITE. Sure it was great but still..not the best super-hero movie out there.

      • Sony could easily pull 4 movies from this franchise, just as they could have easily pulled the 6 Maguire and dunst were signed on to do with the last. I agree though that The Amazing Spider-Man was mediocre, honestly though it could have been pretty good. Marc Webb did a great job, as did Garfield and Stone, the big issue was the way it was cut and how it tried to hard to be heavy handed. I’m happy with the direction the sequels taking though (getting the old costume, more lighthearted, hopefully better editing). As long as this movie stands alone (which the last did not by any means) it could be a great installment.

    • Nope. They planned the Spin-Off and a fourth installment because they HAVE A STORY. You knuckle head. Every movie is made to make money. You just need a GOOD STORY to make MONEY!And it doesn’t have Multiple heroes. It has multiple villains, which Mark Webb will do perfect with. Judge a movie after you see it plz. Not form Still photos that aren’t even high-res.

      • @ Diego

  15. I’m going to wait for the hi-res trailer on Thursday to be sure but the poster does look way too similar to Garfield, and the low res trailer makes it very difficult to tell one way or the other on the closeup shot of the goblin transformation or in any of the shots where Spider-Man and the Goblin (whichever iteration this one happens to be) are fighting. Who knows, maybe it’s a Parker clone and we’ll have a clone saga going on soon. Sony did say they plan on spin-offs. Scarlet Spider could definitely be in the works if clones are running around.
An ensemble hero team versus a singular villain has been proven to work in the past, why can’t an ensemble villain versus singular hero movie work? Not saying this one will necessarily. I think it takes a lot more work and vigilance to make that sort of movie work than the standard superhero/comic book movie but I think it’s necessary if you want to portray a faithful Spider-Man story. Spider-Man is a story of perseverance in the face of all adversity and I hope Webb is able to embody that essence of Spider-Man into these movies. He kept the science/engineering and mechanical web-slinger aspect of the character intact so I think he has a much better handle on who Peter Parker is than Raimi but I still don’t trust Sony when it could be in Marvel’s production house instead.
Regardless, I hope it does well and they don’t screw around with the goblin or venom’s back stories too much. I hate the ultimate version of either but would be ok with ultimate goblin or some kind of hybrid of ultimate/616 goblin but definitely not ultimate Venom though, it has to initially be Eddie Brock and a monstrous alien entity or I’m out. They can make it someone else some other time but if it doesn’t start out that way, they might as well have made Aunt May be Spider-Man or something.

  16. Electro will probably be defeated but will likely end the same as The Lizard but maybe just escapes.

Rhino is going to just be born into the character since we all know he is confirmed to be in part 3.

and im sure Harry will probably kill gwen and spider-man maybe kills harry and then norman will become Green Goblin at the end.

    Or

Maybe all the villians survive, and get lizard out of prison in the 3 rd film and get two more bad guys (Vulture is pretty much a given, the next one could be Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Venom, or maybe even Hydroman, though i do have my fingers crossed to see Shocker)

Since they got films planned till 2018, i actually think they know what they are doing now.

  17. I’ve seen the trailer, I’m now more optimistic than I was before. I always know I can’t really judge a film before I see the whole thing but sometimes the pre-release materials on a film give me a bad feeling.

  18. Here is the leaked russian trailer! Looks awesome if you can get over the fact that the quality of the video isnt that good.

    • Looks super good. I dropped my cocoa on my keyboard because it was a beautiful trailer!!!

    • Kinda funny how Andrew Garfield resembles James Franco and Dane DeHaan looks like Tobey Maguire.

    • Holy Crap! That was awesome, best Spidey trailer sense the theatrical trailer for Spider-Man 2. Now hopefully the English trailer comes out soon.

    • Thank goodness I saw it before Sony’s big head came on SR and removed it XD!

      • Can anyone translate the titles at the end?!

  19. I think too many villains isn’t actually a bad thing, Spider Man 3 was just a bad movie with even worse casting choices and acting. If 3 big bads are too much, how are they gonna pull off the sinister six thing?! The cast so far is ok/great, and Garfields Spidey is awesome. Either way, Im gonna watch that movie and other people as well, so the money will be there and since they already planned out 3 and 4, they can show you a 30 mins clip of spidey fighting the 3 bads and then a 2 hours close up on emma stones beautiful freckles and no one could stop the release of the other projects.

  20. Man!!! Just saw that trailer. Everything looks so cool even from a bad quality video. for those judging the movie from posters and stills, i’m pretty sure this movie will hit the mark spectacle wise, even with the mech-rhino and other altered looks of the villains, just keep an open mind and welcome change. The last cut with Electro zap-flying and spidey swinging was just too cool for words. I have a hunch the man in the shadows from the first movie is The Gentleman. If you look at the trailer closely(which is a pain), you’d see him walking past two things to note : Vulture’s wings and Dock Ock’s tentacles (Sinister Six anyone??).
i’m amped the movie and hope it delivers all round. :D

    • Have you read the book Gathering of the Sinister Six? If so your right! I agree with you 1000000000000000000% I said that from the beginning but there was a twist in the books! Chameleon kills Gentlemen while he is disguised as the Gentleman’s driver. It’s pretty great book! It has lots of funny moments and great secrets! Recommend it to Webb to take the Sinister Six in that direction. Also that girl that everyone thinks is Black Cat could be Pity…great character!

  21. Am I the only one thinking that maybe somehow the clone saga is coming into play? I mean, the picture does look an awful lot like Andrew Garfield… Or is it just me?

    • I’ve thought about long few months ago but…too big, this movie is already crowded.

  22. “Goblin figure looks most like franchise star Andrew Garfield”

It does. OMG! Peter will become Goblin and Harry Spiderman! Then it will be revealed they were just acting to capture Electro and Norman. Oh wait, its not Disney.

    • Disney would just let Electro get himself captured, just to fulfill a disorganized plan.

I think I saw Radagast, Carmen SanDiego, and Waldo in that trailer!

  23. The trailer is pretty spectacular….. Harry is definitely looks to be Goblin…
    A mech Rhino….well…I don’t know…
    Electro definitely looks realllly cool
But with so much to put in…origin of 3 villains…
There wudn’t be a single frame to miss…

  24. Anything is better than the Power-Ranger suit from SM1. I love everything Defoe did as Norman, but the greatest crime in that film is hiding that man’s wonderfully evil face behind a helmet. I want my goblin to have a face!

Also, the too many villains drone really doesn’t help much. There are a bunch of potential villains in this film, but I gather they won’t be treated as they were in SM3. Webb (heh…) wants to build some kind of Spidey Universe. Let’s give him a little breathing room and wait for some more trailers.

  25. I think the Goblin looks like crap. I’m not the biggest fan of the “Power Ranger” costume from Raimi’s film, but I got used to it for almost an entire decade. This isn’t realism, this is taking a massive dump on the most famous Spider-Man villain of all-time. Somebody better change the design before its too late.

    • I agree. I love the Spider man design for TASM but the design for Goblin to me is a joke being a huge fan of the comics. I think the perfect balance would be the designs of the Webb films mixed with the storytelling/plots of the Raimi films(except SM3). Even though I liked TASM, I wasn’t overly impressed by it.

  26. I don’t think too many villians was the problem I think that because the studio made ramili add venom to the plot was, you can have all the villians you want just hard to establish them all at once in one movie but if you build up to them little by little then a sinster six would be no problem

  27. Shoot… I wanted the hulked out ultimate version of green goblin. This looks exactly like the “new goblin” from SM3. Oh well.

  28. Doc ock arms and vulture wings at 1:04??

    • Saw those too. I think it’s one of those ways of writer/directors of saying, “hey these things are in our franchise!” Just like Thor #1 had the infinty gauntlet. Although not the subject, In Iron Man 1 Anyone notice 1st scene of Coulson he has a badge on his suit coat with a ‘V’ on it, and some writing below it I can’t make out.

      V stands for Vision!

  29. I can’t really make Rhino out that well; is he wearing a mechanical suit?
