Sinister Six Amazing Spider Man 2 Amazing Spider Man 2 Will Setup Sinister Six Characters

Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker has plenty on his plate to deal with in this May’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, not least of all will be the various genetic experiments-gone wrong that emerge from the research facilities at Oscorp Industries.

Such trouble-making characters as Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) will be featured in the superhero movie sequel, though in recent weeks it’s become increasingly obvious that the most crucial plot thread (no pun) – and thus the one that may be given the most screen time for development – is the renewed friendship-turned conflict between Peter and Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan).

That Harry gets transformed into a Green Goblin creature in Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a cat that’s fully out of the bag now, as earlier today we posted a Sony-approved photo showing DeHaan in his Goblin mode, up close and personal. However, there are even more villainous characters being “introduced” in the film – like, for example, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, before he fully emerges from the shadows (possibly all Goblin-like himself) in Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2016.

EW‘s latest article on Amazing Spider-Man 2 offers the following insight, with regard to that matter:

“At the tail end of this movie we set up some of the other characters that will probably end up being in the Sinister Six,” says Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal. “We’re going forward on all fronts.” (The studio hasn’t yet announced the exact makeup of its big-screen Sinister Six, but comic book fan Garfield says he personally digs Venom, Doc Ock, Vulture, and Kraven.)

Many a sharp-eyed fan has noticed that there is a shot contained within the first Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer that shows versions of Vulture’s wings and Doc Oc’s arms on display within the more secret facilities of Oscorp – a shot possibly taken from either the ending or mid-credits sequence for the Amazing Spider-Man sequel (hint, hint).

Sony announced development on a Sinister Six spinoff not too long after the initial Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer dropped, so the immediate connection to be made is that Vulture (who was originally supposed to debut in Sam Raimi’s canceled Spider-Man 4) and Doc Oc will be among the players in said Spider-Man villain feature – with Norman Osborn and/or some of the other aforementioned super-powered non-heroes being eyed to join them.

As for the Harry/Goblin (again, no pun), DeHaan is a rising star and he could be used to anchor an upcoming installment in the series (like, in the case where Harry were to undergo a second transformation into Venom), but it depends on what the Harry Osborn character’s ultimate fate is in the second chapter.

Within the same EW interview, Spider-Man franchise producer Avi Arad touched on the reasoning behind making a Sinister Six movie:

“Villains can be very entertaining. It’s not like somebody’s born and they’re a villain. Something happens and it changes their lives. Some people can deal with it — they become the heroes. Some people can’t and hate the world because of what they felt was done to them — they become the villains.”

Marvel Studios’ success at bringing together so many superheroes under the same roof in The Avengers has inspired imitations from other studios (see: young/old versions of X-Men in this year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past), but a villain teamup feature is another beast altogether. There’s certain some risk involved, if only because there’s no guarantee that moviegoers will turn out in large numbers to see a movie sold as being focused heavily on squabbling, egomaniacal, dangerous super-powered criminals.

On the other hand, it’s the very uniqueness of that premise (with respect to more traditional comic book movies and the genre in general) that makes Sinister Six a project that could have an easier time standing out from the rest of the crowd.

We still have two Amazing Spider-Man movies to go before the Sinister Six roster has, in essence, been finalized for the spinoff film by screenwriter Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, Cabin in the Woods), who may also direct. So, in the meantime, feel free to let us know what you think the final lineup will be (and/or who you want to see make the cut).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on May 2nd, 2014, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 on June 10th, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (or either Sinister Six or Venom) on May 4th, 2018.

  1. The lineup will be Lizard, Electro, Rhino, Green Goblin, Vulture, and Doc Ock. And i will be the first in line

    • I think the Lizard will remain behind bars and Venom will be the sixth member of the team. Gives him a nice introduction for his own solo film. or they could totally make the Lizard bust out of jail and help spidey take down the S6! or they could make lizard part of the team and have parker fuse with the symbiote for the film, also setting up a solo venom flick later! SO MANY POSSIBILITIES!!!

    • Not Lizard, it’ll be Venom.

    • I would rather have Mysterio in it…i Always love the character….and make mysterio really mysterious by not revealing to the public who he is till the end of the movie. I would take out Lizard for Mysterio.

  2. Cant wait for a Sinister Six movie I would love to see The Scorpion, Doc Ock, Vulture, Rhino in his mutated form, Kraven and Possibly Electro in his Original form the Green and Yellow Electro.

I just cant seem to understand why the would bring out a transformer into the picture but I guess we will see what happens in the Sinister six with the Rhino

  3. how about mysterio as a villain??

  4. See, here’s my problem with the Sinister Six getting their own movie: this site makes it sound as if Spiderman isn’t in it at all, which could work for a Venom movie since he’s a kind of stand-alone character with his own personal struggles. I just don’t see how they could achieve that conflict with a team of super-villains. What’s their antagonist if not Spiderman? If Spidey’s not in the movie, I can’t see it being very good.

    • Most of the news about the movie has implied that Spider-Man won’t be in it/will have a minimal role. Not so much Screen Rant as it is the people involved with the film and the information they are giving the public.

  5. Mysterio better be in it. Other than that I just want to see the venom movie already.

  6. Personally, I would love to see a Sinister Six movie as a sort of comedy about the Six’s continued failed attempts to defeat Spider-Man. I don’t think Lizard will be in the Six as in TASM’s post-credits scene, Connors warns Mystery Man to stay away from Peter and subsequently Spider-Man, which makes it unlikely he would join a team created solely for the purpose of killing Spider-Man. This leaves one slot open for an as-yet unspecified Spidey villain, and for this spot I would pick either Mysterio (played by David Tennant) or Kraven the Hunter (played by Gerard Butler).

  7. I hope they go with the ultimate version, but with different characters. It could be Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin (the hulkish one) ,Lizard and Doctor Octopus. Other possibilities could be Vulture, Kraven, or Sandman. And they will try to recruit Spider-Man to take the sixth spot, and then may recruit one of the villains I said before.

  8. I reckon the Six will be – Lizard, Electro, Vulture, Doc Ock, Green Goblin and Rhino

Although I expect Venom to be hinted at or make an appearance somewhere during the films, possibly forming an uneasy alliance with Spider-man to help take down the Sinister Six – as Spidey could probably use a hand beating the team – also paving the way for a Venom spin-off movie

I would like it if Sony found a way to include Mysterio into the films and the Sinister Six (instead of using Rhino) but I do see how including him could be tricky

  9. Doc Ock, Vulture, Venom, Kraven, Rhino, and Probably Electro or Goblin. and Kraven and Venom might not even be in the six but I hope they are, would have liked to seen Scorpion.

  10. I kind of hope that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is the death of Peter Parker which results in The Sinister Six reeking havoc in their own film. Make Dehan return as The Goblin but he deffects from the team feeling guilt over Peter’s death and fusing with the symbiote and becoming Venom. He gets his own movie and then The Amazing Spider-Man 4 introduces Miles Morales as the new Spidey.

  11. rhino, electro, green goblin, mysterio, vulture, Dr octopus

I think we could see the guy who doesn’t like peter at the beginning of TASM [I have forgotten his name]lose his legs at the end of TASM3 and become venom like in the comics I hope that’s what happens anyway

  12. All I want is to see Mysterio on the big screen. Who is with me?!

    • I am 100% on board with you. :)

And Mysterio’s powers would line up perfectly with a movie like this…special effects with todays special effects….it could make him quite scary and creepy.

  13. 3 should be green goblin, 4 should be part of sin. 6, 5 should be all of sin. 6, & movie 6 should be Venom & Symbiotes. Then afterwards Spider-Man should join the rest of Marvel in an “Ultimate Superhero Alliance” film.

  14. i think it plays out with venom as the 6th member who eventually turns on the team and goes his own way for his solo film. TASM3 prolly sees the team form up a bit more with norman goblin (or maybe vulture) really making an attempt to kill spidey with doc ock, electro, rhino. if harry submits to his dad he is the 5th and venom the 6th. if harry is venom that leaves one spot. i don’t see the lizard as a sinster member (potentially an ally against them with venom or spidey). i hope kraven gets the last spot

    • considering the parental theme they are running with i imagine harry is confined for most of ASM3 by his father, who is trying to rehabilitate him to submit to his authority, after he misbehaves in 2. eventually harry relents and becomes venom as a gift from dad but in the 6 movie the relationship is further explored and eventually harry turns against dad again but as a anti-hero

  15. Shocker : coz he’s been teased at the promo materials for ASM2. Plus we never saw him on-screen before.
Rhino : he only have 5 minutes of screen time in ASM2, so he’ll be back.
Mysterio : who doesn’t want him?
Vulture : his wings has been teased in ASM 2
Doc Octopus : his tentacles has also been teased in ASM2
Green Goblin : Norman Osborn. Daddy wants revenge on Spidey for killing his son Harry.

  16. Great article! It’s getting everyone excited. Although I don’t understand why you keep saying “no pun”—it doesn’t seem to reference to anything. :)

  17. Green Goblin builds his Sin 6 including:
    Doc Ock

Lizard becomes anti-villain and helps Parker fight the Sin 6.

Have Venom have his own spinoff movie and be the Flash Thompson ex war veteran. He can start by fighting Spidy but then become an ally against the sin 6 and Green Goblin.

After all, Amazing Spiderman 1 set up Flash Thompson as having had dated Gwen Stacy. Once Green Goblin kills Gwen, have Venom go ballistic on GG

  18. I spotted the wings and arms (sounds like some kind of a fried chicken basket for flappers from an old southern truck-stop greasy-spoon joint) right away. I hope for the Sinister Six that two of the villains are Mysterio and Scorpion. Spidey is gonna need some heavy-duty help to defeat all those villains, so the writers better get started working on that (who can he get besides Black Cat? Still needs more help. Maybe the studio can make a deal with Marvel to use Moon Knight or somebody?).

  19. I personally don’t mind any lineup for the Sinister Six, I still want to see Spiderman take on Carnage in a future movie.

  20. That was something I wanted to see from DC in regards to putting their universe together. Heroes start to rise up, and Lex Luthor begins to assemble those who feel threatened: the Secret Society of Villains.

  21. Is Harry confirmed to be the Green Goblin in the film? or is there still a chance he could be the hobgoblin (or some other goblin)?

I am still hoping that all the images and video we have seen is a ruse and the goblin character is actually Norman Osborne. Stupid I know but I think a plot device like the goblin formula used to heal whatever disease he has restored his youth making him look like a warped version of son. Sort of believable but I know It would never happen. I just hate the fact Norman wont be the first goblin.

    Anyway back to the topic at hand;
I dont really want the Green Goblin in the 6, he was never a member unless I missed an issue somewhere, and actively refused to join Doc’s first Sinister 6 incarnation. The only characters I really want to be in the roster would be Chameleon and Doc Ock. They have the most intrigue and characterization to make a decent script, woth inevitable betrayal from Chameleon obviously. Most of the other members are largely just muscle/enforcer types, cool to look at but not developed enough to carry a movie.

Then again I would love an adaptation of the current sinister 6 from “The Superior Foes of Spiderman” series consisting of Boomerang, SpeedDemon, Beetle, Overdrive and Shocker. If you haven’t read it pick it up. it’s incredible

  22. What? No Chameleon love? Spider-Man’s first and oldest foe and no one mentions The Chameleon. Travesty. The Chameleon would make a good addition to a new and improved Sinister 6 (plus he’s a member)

    • I mentioned him in the comment directly above yours :p

Agreed he is a must. Apart from the fact he is my favourite Spidey Villian (behind Hobgoblin), he has so much potential for an intriguing story

      • Yeah you were the only one to mention him. If they have Kraven, they gotta have Chameleon. I’m currently making a Chameleon costume for cons.

    • I didn’t mention him under this article but I did in many other’s.

Im hoping Part 3 has Norman Osborn hire Chameleon and Black Cat as villains trying to frame Spidey but also steal some important secrets and $.

It would be cool if after Chameleon is brought to justice at the end of the movie, Kraven comes in to join the Sinister 6 to get revenge on Spidey. Plus, he can hunt the Lizard and Spidey!

  23. Kraven the hunter would be awesome, underrated villain!
Early 1990′s Tom Selleck would have been awesome as Kraven.

  24. HEAT, SCARFACE, The Godfather are all amazing movies focusing on the villains of life.

I’m intrigued by the idea of a movie focused on the villains, when said Villain is NOT the Suicide Squad or the Joker, the movies I would have expected to be about the Villains.

That said it really depends on the purpose. Why is there a team up? I don’t imagine that a Super Powered Villain movie will be as exciting if they are just robbing banks. Hmmm.

  25. Karl Urban OR Gerard Butler as Kraven!!!!!!!

  26. Electro-Already in the movie universe and will already have a developed storyline.
Norman Osborne Goblin-He’ll be the one who puts the team together and will have revenge on Spidey for whatever he does to his son (preferably ultimate version)
Rhino-We can’t be satisfied with just 5 minutes of him
Mysterio-My favorite villain and has a lot off potential to wow people
Chameleon-He would make a clever choice for the team plus there’s a rumor that’
    He’s doctor Kafka in disguise
Doc Ock-Already foreshadowed to be in the movie and could make a great frenemy for Osborne

  27. Am I the only one that thinks spiderman should at least have a lil bit of help from other heroes??? I mean come on your throwing all kinds of villains at him??

  28. I reckon Harry Osborn (Green Goblin) aka Dane DeHaan should form the Sinister Six in the beginning and then filled with regret, team up with Spidey (Best-Buds)to take them down. Spidey cant take all on by himself, realistically! ;)Also, I believe Dr. Curt Connors should play a part in the third installment; he should be the advisor to spidey on how to beat the sinister six. He obviously knows the mysterious man and wants to help Peter.

    Sinister Six Team: Gentleman-Mysteryman (Leader)
    -Rhino (Paul Giammati)
    -Dock Ock
    -Electro (Jamie Foxx)

Spidey’s Team: Dr. Curt Connors-The Lizard (Advisor)
    -Spiderman (Andrew Garfield)
    -The Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan)

  29. I’d like it to be like this :
    Doc Ock
    Vulture (John Malkovich)
    Electro (Jamie Foxx)
    Rhino (Paul Giamatti)

And Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) helping Spiderman (Andrew Garfield)
Also , i guess the Green Goblin will be the main antagonist in TASM 3.
