[WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2.']

In the comic books, Gwen Stacy is more than just Peter Parker’s first love. The brainy blonde’s death still stands as one of the most recognizable tragedies in the history of the medium, as she was killed during a showdown between our friendly neighborhood web-slinger and the Green Goblin and is one of the few characters to actually stay dead.

So, when Emma Stone was cast as the character in director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man last year, rumors ran rampant that at some point the films would address the sad end to the Peter/Gwen love story. However, while Stone has expressed interest in sticking to the narrative established in the comics, she’s now playing coy regarding where the sequels may go.

In an interview with MTV News, Stone was asked about the possibility that Gwen would meet her end in next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Here’s what she had to say:

“Will she? Is it up to you? Did you write the script? Did you ghost-write the script?”

While her non-answer sounds like it came straight out of the mouth of her sarcastic character from Easy A, Stone’s response is a bit telling in that she is now more reluctant to address the idea that Gwen’s death will factor into the films. Perhaps this is precisely because Gwen’s fate is already written, and the filmmakers may have asked her to dodge questions regarding plot and keep a bit of mystery in the upcoming sequel (and future installments).

This is purely speculation, of course, but given the fact that Dane DeHaan is joining the cast as Harry Osborn and Shailene Woodley is joining the cast in a minor role as Mary Jane Watson – who ultimately winds up being Mrs. Peter Parker in the comics (that is, before the marriage was retconned out of existence) – it appears that the chess pieces are moving into place for the emergence of Green Goblin and (potentially) the tragic end of Gwen Stacy. However, with the second film focused on Electro (Jamie Foxx), such a move will likely not come to pass until the third film at least.

Another question arises from this issue, though. Is this rebooted Spider-Man franchise obligated to adhere so closely to the character’s comic book stories, or should it be allowed the freedom to spin its own tales? After all, many of the most successful superhero films (The Dark Knight trilogy, The Avengers) have included homages and references to specific stories from the comics, while other films like Sin City and Watchmen have faced some criticism for staying too close to the original text.

What do you think, Screen Rant readers? Should The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (or one of its sequels) depict the death of Gwen Stacy, as in the comic books? Or, given the palpable on-screen chemistry between Stone and co-star Andrew Garfield, would you prefer the filmmakers keep her character around? Let us know in the comments.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (not the official title) swings into theaters on May 2nd, 2014.

  1. good article. love any news on the next film. i dont know, their chemistry is great, but if they are trying to tell the true story, then they should give her the axe. although the trailors for the first movie say they are telling the “untold story” so who knows. if she does go, it shouldnt be in the 2nd, because electro is the villain. she needs to die by the hands of the green goblin (or technically spidey), otherwise dont kill her at all, ya know? i just hope TASM2 doesn’t seem rushed with plot holes like the first one did, which i really liked, despite all that.

    • 100% agree with what you said!

      • idk man superhero movies aren’t really known for being totally true to the graphic novels they’re based on… I think electro could totally kill gwen in 2. mary jane’s already there, so gwens already been replaced. idk all this remains to be seen but I think she’s gonna die in 2.

    • I think you’re completely right, they shouldn’t kill off gwen stacy just yet, because of the the story as well as the chemistry Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have on screen, we should really have one more movie with them two. It would make the most sense if Osborn is introduced along with his son in the second one, then their characters really coming into fruition in the 3rd one, introducing Green Goblin and Mary Jane having a bigger part in Peter Parker’s life. Seems like a more healthy way of axing a well liked characters.

      • Harry will be in the next sequel, but they haven’t confirmed Norman for part 2. Mary Jane will also be there as well. I agree with you though. Honestly, I’m thinking that both Harry and MJ will be first introduced in college. Norman might get a small cameo dropping off Harry at school, or something like that. Gwen will actually live through the whole movie because she signed up for three films as a matter of fact. Her death can happen in the 3rd sequel with Green Goblin in it. As for the funeral they’re talking about for the next one, I believe Peter will be there with his Aunt May visiting Ben’s gravesite and friends supporting them

    • Love what you wrote david agree with you 100% as well

  2. Considering Emma Stone portrays Gwen Stacy so well and the on screen chemistry is that good and the fact that Gwen Stacy is liked much more than Mary Jane, I’m hoping they will forget the blip of killing her off and keep Emma Stone and Gwen Stacy for the duration of this reboot series and leave her death or other story avenues to the inevitable 2nd reboot series 15 years down the line.

  3. Bless you for taking a few minutes to publish this. I do believe that there are more desirable solutions.

  4. I still cannot believe after redoing the film that the villain heard voices in his head like Norman Osborn did in Raimes first spiderman.

    So painfully bad.

Garfield was great as was Stone yet the film was not the best Spiderman film in the last decade.

    • yeah TAS was great but it pales in comparison (imo) to spiderman 1 and 2. I’ve discussed it with friends at length. All the girls prefer the new one just cuz of Garfield and Stone haha

  5. This series will never have the same charm that Raimi’s series had. His was fun and exciting. Everything I remember Spider Man being. Not this.

    • Im sorry but i disagree. I think Raimi’s films were a complete disaster, especially the third. I am a die-hard Spidey fan and found soo many things wrong with all three of the films, especially part three. That one was a cinematic mess, Topher Grace was terrible choice for Venom and his role as actually Venom was short-lived. They f***ed with the origin story, saying that Sandman was Uncle Ben’s actual killer and they made him basically a big softie, trying to save his daughter which was never in the comics. The casting for almost all the movies was poor and i honestly believe Raimi screwed up those movies and am truly glad he did not come out with a fourth. He planned on making the Vulture the main villain which i was a bit skeptical of because i cant take him seriously and the fact that three was fairly so the jump in the mood would have seemed odd. The worst part about four though was the fact that he planned on making Felicia Hardy ( for those of you who dont know she is, she becomes the Black Cat, Spidey’s ‘Catwoman’ if you will) the Vulture’s daughter and having her become the Vulturess. Like, seriously? The whole reason she became the Black Cat was because her father was a cat-burglar and she wanted to follow in his footsteps. To conclude this, Raimi’s films were a complete mess, should never have happened, and we should all be grateful part four never came out and was replaced with Webb’s reboot. End post

  6. I think they should have her character killed off, but NOT just to stay true to the comic book storyline. Rather, they should do it simply because of the story they could make out of it. I mean, looking properly at the issue, I’m sure we’re not debating over this simply because it’s canon – we’re debating it because it had an impact and it was a big deal. It’s like Bane breaking Batman. It couldn’t have been included *just* to keep to the comics – it was included because it was a big, important moment that worked well for their story onscreen as much as it did in the comics.

    • ^^This

  7. As much as I don’t want to see Emma Stone die, I think they should kill her off in a sequel to further develop Spider-Man as a hero since the great power comes great responsiblity thing was’nt really played out in the first one.

  8. Keep her around. She was good, there not need to have her killed right away. Could be an interesting love triangle between the three leads.

    • This is Spider-Man. Not The Young and The Restless.

      • Unless we can get Joey Greco on the cast to film an episode of cheaters during the movie…

        • Haha, nono not soap style or “twillight” inspired. Just to cause some amount of friction. Could be one is attracted to Peter and the other to Spiderman. Causes some internal issues with himself. Or unlike his terrible one liner at the end of the movie about promises, he actually honors it and goes for the new girl.. But it becomes clear hes got some unresolved stuff with stacy. I could see them take an aproach like this.

  9. IMO she should die at the end of the next one. Oh, the drama.

    • Suffering is always a part of Peter Parker, it challenges to fulfill his responsibility of being Spider-Man. I agree with you

      • *challenges him

        • plus it makes it more TDK-ish!! haha.. no but I agree, kill her off. it will help spiderman grow as a character.

  10. She dies. She ALWAYS dies. Just as Uncle Ben always dies. Gwen (regardless of Mary Jane) was always Peters true love.

To keep the essence of the character she needs to die.

    • Actually, I don’t think she died in the Ultimate Spider-Man canon that TAS took some of its cues from.

Then again, they did kill Peter and replaced him with… well, you know

      • Yes, she died.

      • Yeah, Miles Moralles

  11. As much as I like watching Emma Stone onscreen, Gwen Stacy has to die so Spider-Man can continue to grow as a character. Her death helps him learn more about that responsibility that Uncle Ben always yammers on about.

    • Gwen can die but the kneesocks gotta stay!

  12. Emma Stone has grown tremendously as a performer I really like her and I’d love to see her stick around as long as possible. However, I’m not a spidey comic book reader but it would be a great nod to the fans for the writers to stay close to the source material as possible and kill her soon (that sounds really bad lol)

  13. I think that Gwen Stacey should die in TAMS 3. Because in order to stay true to the character of Peter Parker and the weight of his responsibility, her death has to take place.

  14. “Take care of her Peter” not “Promise me you’ll saty away from her”

    • I thought he said “keep gwen out of it” … idk maybe I’ll watch it again.

  15. Am I like seriously the only one to remember that Betty Brant was Peters first love?

    • Oh yeah, I forgot about that lol. Unfortunately, I don’t think many people care about her because she’s not a major player like Gwen and M.J.

    • Yeah that’s true but I remember his first real crush being on Liz Allen and his first girlfriend being Betty but I feel like his first serious relationship was with Gwen.

    • Yes you are the only one because Peter and Betty were never in love. They only dated one time in the comics. That was pretty much like Spiderman 3, when Peter took Gwen on one date to the jazz club.

  16. I can’t wait for this o e I loved the first one even thought think it did have a couple of flaws and I think this one will be even better I just saw Django Unchained a few days ago and loved it despite some really tough scenes and it was great for my first tarantino film. I think the cast looks great so far can’t wait to hear more news.

  17. Why DOESN’T she have to die in the second?

    Electro’s the main villain?

    So what!

She could still die at the end at the hands of another villain to set up for the third movie. It’s been way too long since movies have had an actual shock at the end, at least in my opinion.

    • They probably will have her die at the hands of another villain, because I don’t think any actor would DARE step into the Green Goblin suit. It was Willem Dafoe, right? <—No one can beat his Green Goblin.

You're right—we need films that makes jump back like "WTF?!" They need to make us care more.

      • Hmmm I think they could very easily have someone play the green goblin right at the end of the movie, but just keep it out of places like IMBD till after it’s release :p ofc they could always get William Dafoe to play green goblin in this rebooted series :p If a better actor cannot be found to play the role-he did it well actually only villian I really liked from Raimi’s trillogy… However look at it this way- any reboot of Batman (inevitable) has to feature the Joker-his like… nemesis and most iconic villain, at some point so I feel sprry for the pooor actor that has to step into those shoes after Heath Ledgers performance O_o Actually I feel sorry for any writers, directors and producers that have to do a Batman movie after Nolan’s…. So a new actor for Green Goblin is a simple task to convince someone todo :p

  18. Because it’s Emma Stone, I would prefer Gwen Stacy be kept around.

There is always a risk when films are based off of some other medium. You need a brilliant writer to balance between following the source material or adding something original—and, apparently, brilliant writers are hard to come by.

  19. Carnage killed her in the ultimate comics and it worked pretty well. Granted ultimate Gwen stacy is a very different person, but still. It had the emotional weight I think, even though it wasn’t the Goblin doing it.

  20. Gwen needs to die. she’s cool and all, but im sort of a die hard fan and Id like to see that happen XD

  21. I really hope that Gwen Stacy stays in the movies.

  22. The great thing about superhero films or films in general is the creativity to change history or fictional history. I think the screenwriters should adapt the script to keep Gwen Stacy alive as long as they can. Mary Jane can still be in it without compromising the entire comic.

  23. I really love Emma Stone but I just can’t imagine Peter Parker ending up with Gwen Stacy and not Mary Jane Watson. They should kill Gwen off at the end of 2 and have Mary Jane further develop in the third. How many Spidey movies can you make before they become too boring? It would be redundant to keep Gwen… Adding to that, I was reluctant when I found out Shailene Woodley would be playing Mary Jane but I’m starting to really see it in her. And I really think they should include her famous line from the comic books when she first meets Peter. Ah! That’d be so great on film!

  24. i really think she should die in the next movie, i mean it would make it a leigt movie and it would have to be like a 2 and ahalf hours, to fit in everything like how norman osborn turns into the goblin and how eletro comes into the whole thing, but i think it would be a good choice to have the death of gwen, cause there would be so much that they could do in the third movie like really get into the marvel universe, and maybe they would tie up the venom movie with the 3rd one or i think the rhino would be a really cool charater to see in the third one.

  25. Come on! We are all expecting her to die so its so unoriginal :l hate how Hollywood just rehashes stuff but I personall think that they should have a long triangle with MJ and Gwen then get Peter to make a decision who he loves when Green Goblin tries to kill one of them…

    • No!! This isnt freakin Twilight people, this is Spidey we’re talking about. For chrissake. This is how i think the movie will play out more or less
      1) Since Harry and MJ are being introduced Norman might be mentioned throughout the film like in the first or maybe a cameo near the end seeing as Harry’s in the movie
      2) Because Electro is the main villain we most likely wont see Osborn as the Goblin but hopefully this will set the stage for him to become the Green Goblin
      3) Gwen stacey most likely will not die until the third (if it hopefully makes it that far) because she has to die at the hands of Osborn, why? I’ll explain that below
Gwen has to be killed by Osborn because he is Spider-man’s greatest adversary who will stop at nothing to break the hero. Osborn is a ruthless, evil, and determined master mind and it would not be the same if she was killed by Electro or some other villain. The Green Goblin is and will always be the one who causes Spidey to suffer more than any other villian. The whole ‘let another villian kill Gwen’ idea is proposterous and flat-out bullsh*t. Stacey should be killed by Osborn and no one else, thats the end of it. No ifs, and, or buts about it.

  26. They’re not going to kill Gwen in TASM 2 because Emma Stone is so well liked in her role by critics and viewers. I mean, come on, who didn’t like the way Emma portrayed Gwen?? It was perfect! They’ll most likely kill her in TASM 3, after they’ve started to develop the characters of MJ and Harry in TASM 2, and briefly introduce Norman as a hint that he’ll be the main villain in TASM 3. similar to Batman Begins mentioning The Joker at the end of the movie years before they made The Dark Knight. Kind of a way to set up the sequel.

  27. I think they will lose viewers if they kill her in the 2nd as she hasn’t been in long enough. If they want to stay true to the comics they should wait till the 3rd as Gwen and Peter were together a long time. And anyway the fact that Gwen Stacy died was only because the writters ran out of ideas for her and they wouldn’t want to copy a mistake. Gwen was always the right one for Peter. In the film theve portrayed her well as a pretty, innocent ,loving teenager and that is powerfull enough to keep viewers. If they kill her in the 3rd the die hard fans are happy cause shes dead and the casual viewers are happy cause theve seen a bit more of her.

  28. do hell with comic book just don kill her
