It's safe to say that in the minds of many fans, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 pales in comparison to the other superhero blockbusters released in 2014, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and/or X-Men: Days of Future Past both earning higher praise from fans and critics alike. While Amazing Spider-Man 2 offered some of the best Spider-Man action seen onscreen to date, director Marc Webb's sophomore effort in the rebooted Spidey franchise once again felt at odds with itself. On the one hand, the sequel once again tried to tell a deeper emotional story; however, it also once again had (studio-mandated?) blockbuster obligations to meet - in this case, setting up Sony's upcoming villain team-up film, The Sinister Six.

Somewhere in between those two conflicting agendas came a movie that arguably never fully delivered on either (Read our Review). Once again, the story of Peter Parker's personal troubles felt like it got jilted at key points, while the villain storyline(s) felt undercooked and hokey. Unlike the freshman pains of the first film, however, it always seemed to us (and many other fans) that Amazing Spider-Man 2 had been a better (but longer) film at some point - we just never got to see that version before it was cut down for the sake of a more efficient runtime.

Deleted Scene: Oscorp's Peter Parker Surveillance revealed.

This wasn't just speculation; there was clear evidence soaked into the flood of trailers and other marketing materials that over-saturated TV and the Web. More scenes of Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn/Green Goblin transition; more from Norman Osborn and Oscorp; a more in-depth look into the history of Peter's parents; more character interactions - all of it was teased, but little of it was actually delivered. However, according to a post on the Amazing Spider-Man Facebook Page, those noted omissions will be revealed on the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Blu-ray.

The home release will offer fans a look at no less than 13 Deleted Scenes from the film - including the officially-announced "Peter Meets His Father" segment. One can only surmise that other deleted scenes will cover more Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) character development, and likely more of the Peter/Gwen arc. One wonders if we will also get a look at the previously reported extended Norman Osborn ending, where we learn that the late industrialist has indeed survived his "death," as a frozen head in a jar.

Deleted Scene: The fate of Norman Osborn?

All in all, this isn't an unprecedented event, but it sure is a strange example. Many superhero movie fans will likely point to the case of the 2003 Daredevil movie; the theatrical cut of that film is generally frowned upon - but fans have long maintained that the director's cut of Daredevil offers a much-improved viewing experience. (If you haven't checked out thedirector's cut, you should.) However, in the case of Amazing Spider-Man 2, there's still the question of presentation: Hopefully viewers will have the option of playing the movie with the deleted scenes included, because if the new material is just compiled into a separate "Deleted Scenes" section, this whole thing gets a lot less interesting.

This whole situation is somewhat annoying. Without knowing anything but what the studio has specifically revealed, we know that we are at least getting "Peter meets his Father" as a scene; now I admit, I haven't yet seen the segment, but doesn't "Peter meets his father" seem like a pretty important moment in what is ostensibly a two-movie saga about Peter Parker's family woes? How is it that this major thread (you know, the whole basis for this "untold story" reboot) has constantly been overshadowed?

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Felicia Goblin Scene
Deleted Scene: Green Goblin Attacks Oscorp (with Felicia Hardy tease).

We'll have to wait and see to be sure, but right now there is pretty strong evidence that this could be another Daredevil situation, and that Amazing Spider-Man 2 could actually be coming to truly dedicated fans in a more complete and competent form than what they initially saw. And if old footage is any indication, it won't just be more talking; the Green Goblin's attack on Oscorp was heavily featured in early trailers, but was a big set piece that was noticeably absent from the theatrical film. That's some extra action we're happy to sit through - and in general, we'll sit through a longer cut of the film, if it results in a better film. How about YOU?
