Felicity Jones has been acting since she was a teenager (when she appeared in the TV movie The Treasure Seekers), but the actress has gained more indie cred over the past few years, after her roles in films like Julie Taymor’s The Tempest – with the Prospero character gender-swapped so that Helen Mirren could play the role – and the Sundance flick Like Crazy, which paired Jones opposite Star Trek‘s Anton Yelchin.

She has since joined her fellow English actor (okay, he was born in America) Andrew Garfield in the cast for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, Jones’ role in the superhero movie sequel has been kept under-wraps… until (possibly) now.

Jones and her Like Crazy writer-director Drake Doremus were recently interviewed by Flicks and the City (hat tip to Bleeding Cool) about their new collaboration, titled Breathe In. The interviewer asked Jones about playing Felicia Hardy – whose costumed alter ego is Black Cat – in Amazing Spider-Man 2, and the actress was quick to avert her gaze before offering a (not so) casual reply, “Well… possibly, I don’t know. Yeah, if that happens that would be wonderful.”

Is that because Jones is playing another character – but didn’t want to correct the interviewer – or, because she is portraying Felicia Hardy in Amazing Spider-Man 2 and didn’t want to say anything more (possibly even because she doesn’t know how the character will be used in future installments)? Watch the video below, and see what you think:

Felicia Hardy, for those unaware, is a villain/love interest of Spidey’s going back to the “Amazing Spider-Man” comic book issue #194 from July 1979. The specifics of the character’s origins have changed over the years, but she’s usually the daughter of an (in)famous cat burglar. Traditionally, Hardy decides to follow in her father’s footsteps – and take on the costumed identity of Black Cat – after she experiences a traumatic event as a young adult (one which permanently alters her ethical and moral outlook).

Interestingly, Sam Raimi had lined up Anne Hathaway to play the antiheroine, back when he was still preparing to make Spider-Man 4. That was a few years before Hathaway instead ended up playing the most famous comic book cat burglar of them all (i.e. Selina Kyle/Catwoman), in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Similarly, Jones has been rumored to play a female lead character in a few big franchise installments over the past year, like the Jack Ryan reboot and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Felicity Jones in Like Crazy

The “Ultimate Spider-Man” comic book continuity (the main source material for the Amazing Spider-Man movies) mixes things up so that there is a bit of an age discrepancy between Felicia and Peter Parker. Jones as Miss Hardy – assuming that’s who the actress is playing – would, instead, probably be one of Peter’s fellow students when he begins to attend college (i.e. the place where something terrible happens to Felicia, leading her to become Black Cat).

Chances are, if this speculation is correct, then Jones will only appear on-screen as Felicia Hardy for a limited amount of time in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Reason being, the film is expected to setup certain important Spider-Man players – like Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson – to play a significant role in future movies. That would include the planned third and fourth installments in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, which Sony has officially dated for theatrical release in 2016 and 2018 this week.

That’s to say: Jones as Felicia Hardy could very well become Black Cat at some point, but that won’t happen in Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which is what the actress indicated, anyway).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in U.S. theaters on May 2nd, 2014, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 on June 10th, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 on May 4th, 2018.
