Recent Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailers have revealed a lot about the upcoming sequel to director Marc Webb’s franchise reboot; and yet, some fans (us included) can’t help but wonder if there are still some mysteries that have yet to reveal themselves.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 will set the stage for a much wider Spider-Man movieverse – one that will need be populated with enough characters (villains, allies, love interests) to keep moviegoers in the web for some time. But there have been hints that those characters could already be positioned for later debuts, since solid talent like Colm Feore (Thor), B.J. Novak (The Office) and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) have all been cast in the film in unknown roles.

Well now we can count one of those “unknowns” as a “known”: Marc Webb Tweeted the following, finally confirming B.J. Novak’s role in the film:

“A.  Smythe,” as fans almost immediately discerned, is short for “Alistair Smythe,” a familiar villain from the Spider-Man comics. Like everything in the convoluted Spider-Man mythos, there have been several iterations of Smythe, but the basic backstory is that his father, Spencer, was commissioned to make robots known as Spider-Slayers to take down Spider-Man; when dad failed, Alistair took up his mission.

Confined to a wheelchair at first, Alistair built bigger and badder Spider-Slayers until he finally got the inspiration to transform his own body into what he called “The Ultimate Spider-Slayer.” In his cybernetically-enhanced form, Smythe would go on to plague Spider-Man on several occasions.

Right when B.J. Novak was cast in Amazing Spider-Man 2, fans guessed he was either Smythe or Otto Octavius, so this is no surprise, really. As for what role Smythe has in the film: Marc Webb originally tweeted the casting news with the caption “A supposed rumor about a Dunder-Mifflin takeover of Oscorp?” so we know Smythe will be nesting in Oscorp, the den of vipers that Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) and Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) call home – and where Electro (Jamie Foxx) gains his powers.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Comic-Con teaser above always left us dangling when it came to the question of who Electro is referring to as “Doc” while seemingly strapped to a lab table testing the limits of his powers. We’ve already seen seeds of Dr. Octopus being planted in this rebooted universe - but could it be Smythe who helps build Electro into a soldier within Oscorp’s nefarious army of super villains?

It certainly seems like the sort of adaptation that the filmmakers would use for a third-tier character like Alistair Smythe; a whole film built around him (with B.J. Novak headlining it) seems like a really far-fetched possibility. Could we see the Spider-Slayers eventually show up (in either mini or big-bot form)? It WOULD be a suitable way to give Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) some nondescript foes to beat on… but it’s not likely to top many fans’ wish lists for this series.

The Ultimate Spider-Slayer

Personally, I’m more disappointed that Novak isn’t playing someone like Mysterio – but c’est la vie. This clears up one mystery casting still left dangling – and since Colm Feore was long tagged as “Adrian Toomes” (a.k.a. The Vulture) on IMDb, I’d say it’s really down to finding out who Jones’ character (a love interest of “The Goblin”) really is.

Possibilities abound with these Amazing Spider-Man movies; how much of that potential will be utilized?

  1. Having Smythe as the guy that made all the tech that Oscorp is giving its villains, like the Rhino suit, actually makes sense and leaves things open for a future plotline if they decide to go down that route.

    • +1

That’s why I should read comments before posting. Ditto what you said.

  2. Wow that’s cool I guess. Making it a lil too crowded with the villains there Mr. Webb. We could of had just a movie on Alistaire Smythe alone but hey-ho.

    • Smythe wouldn’t have held up as the main villain when Spidey has so much more well known enemies.

He’d be good to set the Slayers onto him while he’s trying to fight the big bad but nothing more.

      • Well there was a slim chance he may have. he worked for the Amazing Spider-Man game as a good main villain in my opinion.

    • The reason SM3 felt crowded was because they tried to cram 3 complete villain stories into one movie. What’s cool about this is they can introduce some villains and just put them on the back burner so that when they do introduce them, we don’t have to waste time on origins.

      • Oh okay that makes better sense I thought they were just forcing him in it just because he’s from the comics thanks for clearing that up!!

  3. Good for B.J., hope its a good part for him. Huge Office fan.

  4. Highly doubt Spider Slayers will have any involvement. But Webb was serious when they said that they wanted to bust this universe wide open.

  5. I read Colm Feore is Donald Menken

  6. Where is the first picture from? Is it a poster?

    • It’s from a video game, I believe.

  7. I think he will be responsible for creating all the tech the villains are going to use, in addition to molding Electro into what he becomes.

  8. I figured this would be who he was. It’s a great character to have in there for future purposes.

  9. Dude Kofi, Im glad you mentioned Mysterio cause I love that character and I was thinking Colm could play him as I was reading the article. But hed be great as vulture. However I love the Mysterio character and really want someone to put him in a movie. I think he could be a great part of team. With all the special effects in movies today hed be someone they could do a lot with. Mysterio and Chameleon should get a chance to battle spider man on screen. If I remember correctly Mysterio was always a part of the Sinister Six in the animated series from the 90s

  10. I think Spider Slayers will feature heavily in ASM3.
Mysterio and the rest of the villains posse will be seen in the Sinister 6 movie spin-off.

  11. Why was Shailene Woodley cut out again?

    • Mary Jane will appear probably in ASM3.
Coz Emma Stone got a 3 movie deal. So we’ll get Gwen Stacy for the next sequel.

      • Well, there’s always flashbacks…

  12. Come on guys, do I have to keep doing your job for you? Don’t take every character iteration so literal. The suits in Oscorp; The Rhino! That’s a spider slayer! That’s what Smythe is there for, along with goblin’s glider.

    • So the rhino’s a spider slayer good observation I would’ve never guessed it!

      • Then Paul giamatti steals and modifies suit to bacome the Rhino ?

        • I really don’t see him modifying it or stealing it, maybe he just gives it to him as revenge?

  13. Then Michael Massee = Spencer Smythe…?

    • Wow that seems very possible !

  14. Plague Spiderman….. on several occasions :) That’s hilarious…..

  15. I know this is random, but is Madame web dead?!

    • the old one is but the newest one is in a coma if im not to be mistaken.

  16. have a feeling the whole sinister six are made to be spider slayers

  17. When posts like this get so few comments, it makes me wonder how familiar with Spiderman most commenters on other posts actually are.
