‘Alphas’ Adds Guest Stars Summer Glau & Brent Spiner, ‘Warehouse 13′ Crossover

Syfy’s take on plainclothes superheroes, Alphas, is off to a decent start, but the network wants to keep the hits coming with some high-profile guest stars. And like Eureka before it, the show is hoping to get a boost from a crossover with the popular Warehouse 13.

Angel, Firefly and Terninator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles veteran Summer Glau will add her talents to Alphas when she makes a guest appearance on the August 22nd episode. Brent Spiner, better known to Trekkies as Lt. Commander Data, will appear in the September 12th episode, along with Lost regular Rebecca Mader.

Perhaps most exciting for fans of Syfy’s ever-expanding shared fictional universe: Lindsay Wagner of Warehouse 13 will appear on the August 15th episode of Alphas. She’ll be playing Vanessa Calder, a recurring Warehouse physician who’s aided the team in seasons two and three. The original Bionic Woman may precede more crossovers if Alphas is renewed for a second season, as Syfy continues to cross Warehouse 13 and Eureka characters with regularity.

The casting choices are smart for a science fiction show trying to find its feet. NBC’s superhero saga Heroes pulled similar moves, casting Star Trek legends George Takei and Nichelle Nichols in guest roles, among others.

What’s more interesting is Syfy’s continuing crossovers. This latest shared character means that all three of the network’s present-day dramas exist in the same universe, even though they each have vastly different tones and focuses.

With Stargate well and truly dead, it seems almost like Syfy is building a new franchise on the consignment plan, with Warehouse 13 forming the center. Don’t forget that plans are in motion for a potential spinoff already, with Jaime “H.G. Wells” Murray taking the reigns of a possible Warehouse 12.

Alphas scored 2.5 million viewers for its series debut a month ago, with ratings holding steady since then. It’s an excellent start for the series, which is trailing only slightly behind Warehouse 13 and Eureka.

  1. Summer Glau was never in Buffy.

She was in Angel, (S3′s “Waiting In The Wings”) which incidentally wa sher first role in the medium.

    Please change.

  2. Was*

  3. Eureka – Used to be good, stopped watching after season 3.
    Warhouse 13 – terrible
Alphas – Based on what I’ve seen so far, is quite poor.

Oh and Summer Glau is like an unlucky rabbits foot, pretty she may be, but she, along with Eliza Dushku, are television poison.

    • Completely disagree. Eureka is fun, Alphas is an interesting premise and a decent show so far and Warehouse 13 is a very neat show and concept. I can only hope that more shows of this type are to come and eventually drown out idiot mind-drivel like Wrestling.

    • I disagree. I like Alphas more than Syfy’s campier shows on Monday. the writing is quite good, better dialog and humor than I was expecting from Syfy.

And Summer Glau is fantastic, there is no such thing as luck, only the weak minded believe in luck.

Summer has played 2 of the most iconic characters in scifi history, a feat for any actor, especially a female. She holds 2 spots in the top 20 on the recent SFX Top 100 Sci-Fi Icons of the 21st Century, one for river at #11, and one for Cameron at #16.

Over 67% of shows get cancelled in their first season, and these are the few that make it to series after the pilot was picked up. The attrition rate is even higher in the scifi/fantasy genre.

If I believed in luck I would say Summer is one of the luckiest people alive, but people make their own luck, and Summer’s success has been earned by hard work and dedication, it’s what I admire about her the most. Summer made every show she was on better, she is a skilled and talented actor.

      • Syfy has released the promo video for Summer Glau episode :

“The team must locate and protect a missing young Alpha who has an affinity for amazing inventions.
        Guest star: Summer Glau
        Monday August 22nd at 10PM ET/PT”

  4. Where Summer Glau goes, Tv Shows Get canned. Just saying after TSCC and That show on NBC that was axed after 10 episodes, of which 9 aired on tv.

    • Save your vitriolic mean spirited mumbo jumbo cancelled memes for 4chan, that’s where your trolling belongs.

  5. Alphas is a very solid superhero series, it’s learning from the flaws of the later seasons of Heroes by keeping everything grounded in a realistic way and managing to focus on the characters more than the powers, and it helps that the characters are a small group of people, it makes it easier to connect with and care about them, a problem I often had with Heroes’ multiple characters and story lines.

  6. While I’ve noticed the trend of Summer Glau appearing on shows that tend to get canceled, I decided to IMDB her credits just to see if there’s any truth to the rumor/supposed theory. Though I cannot attribute the cancellations on her, it is an unfortunate streak.

The Cape – canceled (mercifully, as I’ve heard it)
Chuck – effectively canceled (shortened final season)
    Dollhouse – canceled
    Terminator: TSCC – canceled
The Big Bang Theory – NOT canceled
    The 4400 – canceled
    The Unit – canceled
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – NOT canceled
    Cold Case – canceled
    Firefly – canceled
    Angel – canceled

I’d imagine if the same search were done on multiple actors, it would yield very similar results.

    • Almost all shows get cancelled.

Over 67% in their first season. And even more for scifi.

    • You got it all wrong regarding Chuck.

After Summer Glau guest star in one episdoe, the serie was said to be cancelled, just like Fringe. Every tv expert annouced the soon cancellation.
Surprisingly, it was renewed for a last season (like Fringe btw).

    • Fortunately for Summer Glau, Hollywood Execs don’t believe in curse, they believe in money.
Apparently, they believe that Summer is a good enough actress to have gained a following among scifi lovers, this is why every scifi serie wants her as guest star.
Unfortunately, scfi is not ratings friendly these days.

    • Interestingly, if you remove the shows which she merely guest starred in, ALL the others were canceled early. Not saying she’s cursed, just an interesting fact.

  7. not a fan of alphas, but it would be nice to see how all three shows fit in the same universe.

if there was a crossover i truly want is burn notice and covert affairs

    • Burn Notice and White Collar could be good.

  8. Syfy, the Marvel of the TV Networks. Way to go

  9. Okay, the first episode of Alphas was kinda meh. The second episode was the traditional “finding it’s legs” snoozefest that most sci fi shows go through. But starting with episode three when one of the show’s regulars dies a very unexpected brutal, and I do mean brutal death, it made me sit up and take a good look at this show. Episode three was daring and episode four was fun and interesting with a nice twist and showed me that there is a lot of story and intelligent hiding under the hood of this show.

If you are judging this show based only on the pilot and second episode, I would suggest that you watch Alphas a little farther and you might be surprised at the story that is lurking under a show that on the surface might look bland.
This show is more X-Files and Fringe then Heroes.

  10. I really like Summer (can it haters) and Brent.

Eager to see what they’ll bring.

  11. Can’t wait to see Summer Glau in Alphas.
I hope she plays an Alpha and not some kind of bureaucrat; it’s the case apparently from the promo video i saw at fansite Summer Glau Wiki.

Also they have posted on youtube a behind the scene video from a photoshoot Summer Glau made for FHM:

  12. I love Alphas, I was skeptical at first, watching the pilot, I wasn’t quite sure if this was going to be a succes or not. But I kept watching and now I can’t wait for the second season to air already. Love the cast, love the characters and the storylines.
Btw Summer Glau rocks, kind wished she would be a regular on this show, or a recurring guest, that would be great too.

  13. good blog about warehouse

  14. Warehouse13 is a great TV series. I hope they do not cancel the show. Irs the only one I really enjoy.
