Ridley Scott's original Alien movie debuted in 1979, combining aspects of science fiction with horror to become a beloved classic and launching a franchise that will welcome its sixth installment next year. Alien was followed by three sequels, with another planned from director Neill Blomkamp, but Scott launched a new prequel series in the franchise, kicking off in 2012's Prometheus. Next, Scott returns to the prequel series with Alien: Covenant, which is rumored to connect directly to the original Alien film.
Alien: Covenant features a largely new cast as the film follows the colony ship called the Covenant that is attempting to find a new home on a distant planet. However, they aren't alone on the unknown planet and fans can expect more of the sci-fi/horror that has become synonymous with the Alien franchise. Now, a new report indicates fans won't have to wait much longer to get their first look at the trailer for Alien: Covenant.
Trailer Track is reporting the first trailer for Alien: Covenant has been rated by the German FSK, running roughly two minutes, and may be released this weekend. We can confirm that 20th Century Fox's embargo on footage screened earlier this month for press -- including the Covenant trailer -- lifts this weekend. Plus, recent Fox embargos on footage screened for War for the Planet of the Apes and A Cure for Wellness have been lifted along with public trailer debuts, indicating the studio may follow a similar pattern for Alien: Covenant.
Alien: Covenant stars Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Danny McBride (Sausage Party, This Is the End), Billy Crudup (Spotlight, Watchmen), Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience), Jussie Smollett (Empire), and Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts, The Purge: Anarchy). Additionally, Prometheus stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are expected to return -- the former as both original android David and new synthetic Walter, the latter as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. Guy Pearce will reportedly reprise his role as Peter Weyland, and it was more recently confirmed James Franco will appear as well.
Based on early reactions to Alien: Covenant from those that attended the Fox footage showcase, Scott's Prometheus followup will deliver on the promise that it is even scarier than its predecessor. Still, fans won't be able to get an idea of what exactly to expect from Covenant -- and how it ties into both Prometheus as well as Alien -- until the trailer debuts online. However, considering the trailer has been officially rated, it likely won't be long until it's released, perhaps in just a few days.
