[Update: Hayley Atwell has been cast as Peggy Carter in The First Avenger: Captain America!]

After the big announcement that Chris Evans was cast as Captain America, the endless rumors seemingly came to an end, but not really. A mere few days later we saw the rumors start about the supporting cast members, one of which pointed towards Keira Knightley and Ryan Phillippe being cast in the movie.

Knightley was reportedly one of the three candidates (all British actresses) for the leading female role of Peggy Lee alongside Emily Blunt and Alice Eve so her “casting” wasn’t a stretch. As we heard yesterday, Blunt is rumored to have declined the role for a chance to play Catwoman in Batman 3 but there’s nothing even close to confirmation on that front.

We now have some more development on Captain America leading lady front with E! Online reporting from their source that Alice Eve is the current top choice for the gig, having been called in for a second addition. With Blunt and Knightley possibly out of the running, joining Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) in the running is Hayley Atwell (The Duchess, The Prisoner). Atwell was also called in for a second screen-test so both will be in London tomorrow auditioning.

I’m fine with Eve or Atwell having the part. We can expect many more names to pop up over the next several weeks with production gearing up in June.

So far, we know Chris Evans is Captain America, Sebastian Stan is playing Bucky and Hugo Weaving is the villainous Red Skull. Who do you think should play Peggy?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011.
