Fox has ordered a quartet of new shows for the fall TV season: J.J. Abrams’ time-traveling Alcatraz, Bones spinoff The Finder, The New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel and I Hate My Teenage Daughter starring Jaime Pressly.
Alcatraz has been in the works for a while, and should make a good companion for Fox’s other Abrams sci-fi, Fringe. The new show is about a group of Alcatraz inmates and staff that vanished from the prison in the 1960s, only to reappear in modern times. Lost favorite Jorge Garcia and The Tudors‘ Sam Neill are set to star.
The Finder will focus on Walter Truman, a Florida private detective played by Geoff Stults. The new series is based off a pseudo-crossover that appeared on Bones just a few weeks ago. Fox may be looking to spawn its own investigation franchise to counter CBS’ CSI and NBC’s Law & Order. The announcement comes shortly after Bones was renewed for a seventh season.
Speaking of which, Bones star Emily Deschanel’s sister is getting her own Fox show. The New Girl will star Zooey Deschanel as a romantically frustrated schoolteacher who moves in with three men. (It sounds kind of like a gender-reversed version of Three’s Company.) The half-hour comedy will begin airing in the fall.

Jaime Pressly of My Name Is Earl will be getting another shot at comedy with I Hate My Teenage Daughter. The show revolves around two friends (Pressly is presumably half of the pair) who realize that their daughters have become the same kind of in-crowd bullies that they hated in high school.
The pick-ups come the same day that Fox put five of its shows down for good. Lie To Me, Human Target, Traffic Light, Breaking In and The Chicago Code were all cancelled after disappointing ratings. Fox also declined to pick up the TV series based off of Locke & Key, a popular horror comic book.
All four new shows should begin filming the rest of their season pick-up soon and debut in the fall, though specific dates have not been given. Expect the other broadcast networks to announce their own fall premieres and cancellations soon.
