While all of the petitioning from Criminal Minds fans couldn’t save A.J. Cook from being wrongfully fired from the series, it appears that we haven’t seen the last of Cook’s lovable character Jennifer Juneau. This spring, Cook will be returning to Criminal Minds for a single episode.

Last summer, the Criminal Minds fandom rightfully revolted against the brash, thoughtless decision from the “powers that be” to terminate Cook’s contract with the series.

While departing cast members is not uncommon in television or for this series (Mandy Patinkin and Lola Glaudini both left previously), Criminal Minds has been criticized for their obvious and ongoing trimming of female cast members. Unfortunately, J.J.’s character reprise does nothing but confirm the accusations.

Cook’s return is neither a sole character piece nor a welcoming return for her character. Instead, Cook will be returning for former co-star Paget Brewster’s final episode. Facing the same fate as Cook, Brewster’s character Emily Prentiss was given a smaller role in this season of Criminal Minds, only to be completely written off midway through.

As fans will undoubtedly be happy to see Cook return to the BAU, the fact that it correlates with Brewster’s final episode somewhat dampens any potential joy. Fortunately, Criminal Minds fans are not the only ones unhappy with the way the series had chosen to release select female cast members. Kristen Vangsness, who plays the lovely Penelope Garcia, had a few choice words about this when we talked with her last July.

“It certainly didn’t feel good and certainly doesn’t make you feel like, ‘Oh, everybody’s ok!’ It makes you very aware that it’s a job and if they need you, they keep you, and if they don’t, they fire you.

Not that [Cook’s] not necessary! But, someone made a decision that she was not necessary and that’s a bad decision – in my opinion. My job, I did not choose to be “whoever makes these decisions” and that’s their choice. It’s like you’re living in someone’s rental and they get to decide who stays and who goes — and it BLOWS!”

Perhaps it’s Vangsness’ sidekick-esque nature on the series or the fact that fans absolutely love her character, but Penelope Garcia seems to be the only female character that’s safe for any transition to the Criminal Minds “boys club” that appears to be forming. In fact, Vangsness will now be pulling double duties as her character will also appear in the Criminal Minds spin-off, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.

Even if it’s for a single episode and even if it’s brought on by the departure of another female cast member, it will be nice to see A.J. Cook return to the series. Of course, whether or not these calculated character dismissals will mark the beginning of the end of this series still remains to be seen.

  1. I will no longer watch CM. yOU removed the best!
what about Will and baby Henry. JJ I will not watch without yoy and Emily

  2. JJ and emily are one of my favourite characters.how could anybody think they are nt dat important to the show.jj has a way of making everything seem better than it actualy is and she has this air of comfort around her lyk evrytin is gonna b ok while emily is so levelheaded and she has a mind f her own almays……oh nd i luv d fact that she speaks several languages,i tink both of them are real assets to the BAU Nd they should be more appreciated

    • the problem with this is that the patriarcal mentality leads this people to fire such terrific actress. Equality does not exists in the politics of job opportunity they need to feel they are the center of the earth. All of the Criminal Minds womens roles are excellent.

  3. An FBI behavioral series with no female agent representation. I’M totally blindsided by the heads extremely narrow minded viewpoint of Women not to mention the firing of two very talented valuable Actors, A.J. and Paget.
I cannot in good conscience watch CM ever again after the horrible way they treated these two wonderfully talented Actors. I am so proud of Paget Brewster, the classy way she handled the situation and her decision to not renew her contract. Good Luck to you both. Bon Voyage.

  4. I was a huge fan!! But it’s not the same without a.j. And paget. No longer a fan!!

  5. I am a huge fan of Criminal Minds. I can’t believe that first JJ was gone and then Emily Prentiss, my favourite character in the show. What I do not understand is why say JJ got transferred to a new unit and they killed of Emily Prentiss in the mean time. Then they say that JJ is reconsidering coming back to the BAU, and that Hatchner made a choice that had effected the team, and that Hatchner made the choice to protect the team and Emily then all of a sudden Emily is back in the BAU after the whole team has to go to trial all because of Ian Doyal. (Season 7 or 8, Episode “It takes a Village”. I just do not understand why they killed of Emily and then say that she is still alive. I know that some people a saying that they will never watch Criminal Minds again or that they are disowning Criminal Minds all because of the spin off, but I will never stop watching Criminal Minds because I have the rest of the team to look forward to seeing and also the return of JJ and Emily Prentiss.

  9. I was an avid fan of CM, especially of Mrs. Cook and Brewster. Now that they are gone I don’t bother to even watch the reruns. These ladies were and still are awesome! Not to mention skilled at their craft. Do I need to even say how beautiful they are? I hope they get on with some other show soon. I miss watching them do their thing! I know I don’t know the story. All I know is what is in the press, nothing else. Heads up ladies!!! We all love you! Best wishes!!

  10. Boy!! I did not know that JJ was fired.. I was going to write and ask that there be more story line with Will (AJ husband) I loves that story line. I hope they fix this fast.
