The first teaser trailer for Agents of SHIELD season 7 takes the series back to 1931 and will feature the return of Hydra in the process. Agents of SHIELD was the first TV series to come in the wake of the boom of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show has aired on ABC for the last six years and after several entertaining and inventive stories, the upcoming seventh season will be its last.

That reveal only came to fans recently, but the creators of the show have known that season 7 would be the end since it was picked up. They've planned to tie up Agents of SHIELD's story by going back in time. The season 6 finale showed the team traveling back to the early 1930s and activating an LMD/Chronicom version of Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). It has only been a few weeks since the finale aired, and now we already have our first look at the new season.

As part of Agents of SHIELD's panel at D23 2019, Marvel released the first teaser trailer for season 7. The trailer is quick and largely focuses on the Chronicoms mission to take identities from other people in 1931. But, once the sizzle reel for the rest of the season begins, the trailer confirms that Hydra will once again have a presence on the show.

Agents of SHIELD Hydra

Hydra has had a major impact on Agents of SHIELD, with most of it coming in the fallout of what happened in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was in that movie that it was revealed that Hydra had secretly infiltrated and taken over SHIELD, leading to its demise. That completely destroyed the concept of Agents of SHIELD, but that was probably for the best in the long run. The next few seasons saw Hydra trying to rebuild and dove deeper into the history of their original takeover.

In going back to the origins of SHIELD itself, the main agents of the series could explore how this takeover happened in the first place. Their main concern is stopping the Chronicoms though, which will be easier said than done. With the technology they display in the trailer, they may be able to impersonate anybody that they come into contact with. How Hydra fits into this larger war remains to be seen. With only a handful of episodes left before Agents of SHIELD is complete, it will be fascinating to see how all of these threads tie up and close out this series.
