The season 3 finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. saw Phil Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) team of agents battle against the ancient Inhuman Hive, who had taken over the body of Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), and his sway over fellow Inhumans. The battle left both Hive and agent/Inhuman Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) gone. Plus, a six month time jump at the end of the finale episode indicated big changes in store for the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization – including Daisy (Chloe Bennet) having gone rogue and Coulson not being the director any longer.
In addition to welcoming the Marvel Comics hero Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna) to season 4, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will introduce a new director, who it was recently announced will be played by Jason O’Mara (Complications). However, while Marvel TV and ABC have yet to announce the name of O’Mara’s character, we now have our first look at the new S.H.I.E.L.D. Director.
TV Line debuted the new image of O’Mara in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is additionally the first official photo from season 4 of the series (aside from the revamped Ghost Rider-themed logo). Speaking to TV Line, co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen explained what the new director brings to the show: “It’s definitely a new dynamic that we added to the mix. Things have been shaken up a bit.” Take a look at O’Mara as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D.:
Certainly, not much can be gleaned about O’Mara’s character simply from this first photo of the new director. However, it was previously revealed that he will be “a character whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s.” Additionally, the actor recently spoke about the role, explaining that although the character is being adapted from the Marvel Comics library, the writers are sure to put their own spin on it. Still more tidbits of information can be gleaned from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 synopsis, which teases a close working relationship between the director and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).
That said, while we may not know what classic Marvel Comics character O’Mara may be playing in the upcoming season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s likely to be a new take on the character who will fit into the world established in previous seasons of the show. Plus, we know the new director will have plenty to contend with since Daisy has gone rogue, becoming a vigilante, Ghost Rider will bring a new kind of superhero to the MCU, and the technology of Life-Model Decoys will be introduced as well.
So, it remains to be seen who O’Mara’s character will turn out to be and how the new director will work with the fans’ favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in season 4. But, viewers have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming season in addition to the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premieres Tuesday, September 20 @10pm on ABC.
