Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider in Agents of Shield season 4

After a long absence, Ghost Rider is returning to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to help the team stop AIDA once and for all. All throughout its fourth season, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been building up the elements that will come to a head in its finale. We've seen the story of AIDA and the LMDs, along with the Framework and the Darkhold laid out across the entire season. All of these factors will play into the endgame of the season, which will erupt in a few week's time. On Wednesday, our heroes will attempt to escape as AIDA's master plan is finally revealed. But the real world won't be any more hospitable than the Framework, as we work our way toward the end of the season.

Meanwhile, lots of questions still remain about the mysterious Project Looking Glass. While some fans have speculated it could allow characters like Ward and Tripp to return, executive producer Jed Whedon recently shot down the idea. It may just cause another familiar face to come back to the show, however, as the long-absent Ghost Rider will be making his highly anticipated return. Earlier today, the character's return was teased, and now it's been outright confirmed.

ABC have unveiled a new synopsis for the season 4 finale of the show and, sure enough, Ghost Rider will be back to help the agents take down AIDA. Check it out below:

Considering the role the Darkhold plays in the presence of Ghost Rider and Project Looking Glass, it was always possible that Robbie Reyes would return in some form. Given how big of presence he played in the first part of the season, his return will also help bring the entire season of the show full circle. He won't be the only character coming back, though.

The synopsis includes Yo-Yo, now back in the thick of things after our heroes' return from the Framework. General Talbot will also be present, along with someone only mysteriously referred to as "silhouetted man." One of the most interesting reveals is the presence of Hope McKenzie. With everyone back in the real world, Hope should have been left behind in the Framework. Her inclusion means we'll either once again visit the alternate reality, likely for a tearful goodbye, or that Project Looking Glass will succeed in bringing at least one character over from the Framework. We'll know soon enough, as the finale is just a few weeks away.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues with ‘Farewell, Cruel World!’ May 2nd on ABC.
