[WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.]
Ever since it premiered, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been building out Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (from its origins on the big screen) to include mythos established and expanded on the television series. In season 1, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team of agents were forced to deal with the fallout of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Throughout season 2, AoS introduced the Inhumans – superpowered individuals created by the Kree using human and alien DNA – and the conflict with those outside their culture.
In the season 2 finale, the conflict between the Inhumans and S.H.I.E.L.D. came to a head, leaving the former’s society leaderless and opening the door for Coulson to establish a team led by Skye (Chloe Bennet). At the time, it was speculated that the team would follow a particular storyline from the comics and Marvel has now confirmed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will in fact feature Secret Warriors when the show returns in the fall.
Variety is reporting the inclusion of Secret Warriors in season 3 and revealed a poster featuring a new version of the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo for the upcoming storyline. Additionally, a brief synopsis for the third season was released that indicates Coulson will be assembling the Secret Warriors team, though he and his agents won’t be the only ones attempting to find Inhuman individuals.
Read the synopsis, then check out the Secret Warriors poster, below:
“In the aftermath of SHIELD’s battle with Jiaying and the Inhumans, Director Coulson (Clark Gregg) will search the world for more powered people and assemble an extraordinary new team to deal with threats unlike the world has ever seen. However, the Agents of SHIELD will soon find out they’re not the only ones tracking down these new Inhumans.”
Although Skye will likely be the leader of the Secret Warriors, fellow Inhuman Lincoln Campbell may be part of the team as well (since actor Luke Mitchell was promoted to a series regular for the upcoming season). Both Bennet and Mitchell, along with the rest of the AoS cast, will be attending the Marvel Television Presents panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where (according to Variety) more will be revealed about the season 3 Secret Warriors storyline.
With Marvel’s television side expanding the studio’s cinematic universe – and providing direct lead-ins to big screen properties like The Avengers: Age of Ultron – AoS is exploring the mythos of the Inhumans and Secret Warriors to create compelling and action-packed television. While it may not be a two-way street for Marvel TV and Marvel Studios, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. earned the right to stand on its own in season 2.
Since the MCU will be busy dealing with Civil War and Infinity War in its Phase 3 of films, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will continue to develop its own storyline with Coulson and Skye in the Secret Warriors, providing fans of the series with a comic adaptation separate from the movies.
The Marvel Television Presents 2015 Comic-Con panel (featuring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter) will be held in Ballroom 20 on Friday July 10th @3PM.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for season 3 on Tuesday, September 29th, 2015 @9PM on ABC. Agent Carter returns for season 2 in early 2016.
