Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has come a LONG way in its sophomore season, taking the groove found near the end of season 1 and transforming it into a steady beat of improved espionage action, as well as more relevant connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. That upward trend looks to continue with the second half of season 2, with Skye’s new powers (and all their connection to Marvel’s Inhumans) being the main focus.
Now we know that another super-powered lady will be paying a return visit to the show: none other than Thor’s Jaimie Alexander, aka Lady Sif.
TV Insider reports that Alexander’s Lady Sif will be returning in the next episode following the midseason 2 premiere. In that episode, Lady Sif once again comes to earth and lands in Coulson’s company – only this time she’s stricken with amnesia, after battling a yet-to-be-revealed super villain.
Here’s what executive producer Jeffrey Bell had to say about Sif’s return to the show:
“[W]e’re going to have fun with that… It’ll give us some much-needed humor in a season that’s been full of betrayal and death.”
Inhumans & Asgard?
Interestingly enough, Marvel has delegated the major foundation-laying for its upcoming Inhumans movie to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., via Coulson’s resurrection and the more recent revelation of Skye’s origin story. That storyline has been the major thrust of season 2, and it looks like that will continue to be the case, with early midseason promos teasing Skye’s new dilemma with her uncontrollable powers.
While addressing how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will further utilize the re-appearance of Lady Sif, Jeffrey Bell made some interesting comments which suggest that Asgard may also have a role in shaping this Inhumans saga:
“We’ve been dealing a lot with space aliens and Inhumans in our last few episodes—things our Earth-bound heroes just don’t know much about… They need help understanding what’s really going on. Sif’s memory—what’s left of it—will come in very handy.”
The mid-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World and events of Guardians of the Galaxy have already drawn the connective threads between Asgard and other alien races like The Kree – who are the creators of super powered human/Kree hybrids known as The Inhumans.
Given Asgard’s position in the universe, it’s more than likely that Lady Sif has a fair amount of knowledge regarding Kree lore and its connection to the history of The Inhumans. In true Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fashion, we’ll probably get the barest hint of that info – due to Sif’s “amnesia” – but that hint will be enough for fans (and geeks like us) to discern plenty of juicy MCU developments to come.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for the second half of season 2 on Tuesday, March 3rd @9pm on ABC.
