Ever since her tombstone was shown during the tease of what the Framework had in store for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., viewers have wondered how Simmons died, and what it means for the real Simmons, who has now entered a reality where she is already gone. Well, thanks to the newest clip from the show’s return episode, titled ‘What If…’, Daisy has figured it out.
Marvel and ABC’s first joint-venture, is nearing the end of its fourth season and in doing so has implemented its biggest change yet. Revealing Hydra’s secret takeover in conjunction with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the introduction of Inhumans have both had lasting impressions on the show, and now the end of season 4 will allow for the series to explore an alternate reality known as the Framework.
Constructed by Dr. Radcliffe and his evil LMD Aida, the Framework was used to trap Agent May and use her try and take over S.H.I.E.L.D., but after that plan failed, the two moved on to plan B. Radcliffe’s new plan included strapping Coulson, Mack, Fitz, and Mace into the Framework along with May. Meanwhile, Daisy and Simmons are the only remaining members of the team still in the real world. However, as shown in episode 15, Daisy and Simmons have entered the Framework and discovered what’s in store with their new lives — or lack thereof when it comes to Simmons.
In the Framework reality, Simmons died from a contamination at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy for Science and Technology. She was not the only one to lose her life, however, as the death total reached 200 lives. This is a tough reality for Daisy to discover, and understandably so, but with Hydra now running this world and Inhumans being hunted, she will have her hands full — especially without her powers.
With the world making it clear that Inhumans are not welcome and that S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer exists, the contamination that killed Simmons here could very well be an early release of Terrigen mist. If this is the case, the rationale behind the hate for Inhumans makes much more sense in this world. It would also be a rather fitting end for Simmons as well, after previously being terrified of Inhumans when they were first introduced.
Now that the circumstances behind Simmons’ death have been revealed, viewers will have to tune in to discover how Simmons factors into the Framework. She is not the only team member that will experience some changes, as the Framework will also have Coulson be a school teacher, Ward is brought back to life, Mack becomes a stay at home dad, and it even features the introduction of Madame Hydra.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 returns with ‘What If…’ April 4 @10pm on ABC.
