‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Episode Will Deal with ‘Thor 2′ Aftermath

After the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer premiered, Phil Coulson’s gang from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. looked a bit like a poorly funded taxi squad by comparison. Though many fans believe that S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t hold a candle to Marvel’s film projects, the producers have plans to tie the two together once again in an upcoming episode that will deal with the aftermath of Thor: The Dark World.

So, Loki cameo? Probably not something quite so eventful, but while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. mooching off of Thor’s buzz isn’t at all surprising, the fact that Marvel is letting us know about it in advance of Thor‘s debut next week sort of is.

Here’s a bit from Marvel on the episode, which is called “The Well”.

In the aftermath of the events chronicled in the feature film Marvel’s ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pick up the pieces–one of which threatens to destroy a member of the team, on Tuesday, November 19 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Marvel also announced that the episode had been written by Monica Owusu-Breen and directed by Star Trek: Next Generation actor and frequent TV director Jonathan Frakes. Guest stars include: Peter MacNicol (Ghostbusters 2, Ally McBeal) as Professor Elliot Randolph, Michael Graziadei as Jakob Nystrom, Erin Way as Petra Larsen, Toby Wilson as Neils, Alex Neustaedter as Maynard and Sylvia Brindis as Elena.

Again, this isn’t a terribly surprising development as cross-promotional opportunities like this are one of the reasons people were so eager to see Joss Whedon bring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to life. But while the Thor connection (and the hope that someone that resembles an actual superhero will make even the briefest appearance at the end of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will almost certainly lead to an uptick in ratings, the real challenge will be in keeping new viewers that fall into this trap.

Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s debut, the show has been trending downward, shedding viewers in the 18-49 demo, moving all the way from 4.7 to 2.6. One could use the term “hemorrhaging viewers” and not be accused of being bombastic or inaccurate, but while the show is still in the safe zone (and who are we kidding, that Marvel badge and all that comes with it is the real shield, likely keeping this show afloat unless things get abysmal), a number of fans seem to be watching out of obligation or hope that things will get better, not because the show has gripped them tightly.

Could a big Thor surprise change that? We’ll see, but if not, a possible Captain America bump is only five short months away.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesdays @8pm on ABC. Thor: The Dark World premieres in theaters on November 8th and Captain America: The Winter Soldier bows on April 4th, 2014.

  1. There is no going back now. Seriously, just admit failure and move on. AOS isn’t doing the Marvel-verse any favors… and I would much prefer we all stop talking about how terrible this Marvel product is.

IM 3 serves that purpose enough. It doesn’t need help.

    • This helps the show in a big way. People are watching the show, hoping that there will be crossover with the movies and this provides that. The only problem is, are they going to execute it? I’d hope by now they’ve heard all the negative and try to change it.

For this show to succeed. They need to introduce known or lesser known Marvel characters and give it some stakes. Give the show some sense of danger, and scale back all the typical stereotypes. ABC, I know you think giving all the characters stereotypes, and model-like looks draws in the viewers, it doesn’t. Give this show some gravity and sense of something and people will latch on. I heard Breaking Bad did incredibly well, right?

      • This show seems like a few others in the genre where they do not want to pay to carry a large cast, thus the many one-off characters. Using a known character from the comic books would mean possibly having to spend more for special effects if the powers are too outrageous and they would have to get an actor that is at least serviceable in the role. Then they run the risk of fans wanting more of that character and the producers not wanting to spend the money.

As for this tie-in with Thor, well it would be foolish not to make some mention of the films that will be running concurrent to the series, but it begs the question is this show really made to stand on it’s own or is it an infomercial for Marvel films. I find it ironic that they are going deal with the aftermath from whatever happens in Thor 2, but they have only made mention of New York and somehow managed to never have an episode in New York so far.

        • Why aftermath ?
Should be direct in ! Attack on London and they fly in !
They should have taken the chance and let the TV Show team film actually on the Thor sets ! All actors are there !
Have a second camera team follow coulson and team and have the movie action play in the back ground !

Saves cost, since all is already been made for the movie and looks much more epic !

Let the TV show use the movie sets and the special effects are rendered in 3D already as well ! All saves cost !

Problem with the TV show are the driving forces behind it who limit it to what it is ! Disney and ABC = poor Marvel show !

Marvel, please move on to another station or open your own channel !

          • That would require brains and unbureaucratic cooperation, both of which Hollywood is very short on.

            • Sadly you are right !
              Cheers mate !

          • Isn’t ABC owned by Disney? The show won’t be moved, because Disney and Marvel want to keep it “in house”…the ONLY way it will last even a season.

          • Except the TV show started shooting earlier this year (May?) and Thor had finished its principal filming last year and I think additional shoots were done for the non-London scenes.

          • “Have a second camera team follow coulson and team and have the movie action play in the back ground!”

It doesn’t work that way. If a second camera crew filmed the Battle of New York from a separate angle you’d just see a couple of empty blocks except for one place where a bunch of extras are running across the street screaming while Captain America fake punches a guy in a green leotard and half of the film crew would be in the shot. It’s not an immersive environment like a video game.

            • LOL

    • or they should just move it to Saturday mornings at 11am because it is really just a kids show

      • Yes, because who wouldnt want their child to watch a former SHIELD agent sever the hand off a security officer in order to take his quarry.

    • I’m with the good doctor on this. Time for this to be over.

      • Agreed.

A few months ago when I was looking forward to the show, I would’ve taken this news with excitement and anticipation but 5 episodes in and it just feels like a shallow attempt at grabbing viewers because they know how much of a failure the show is and are scrambling and desperate.

The show would’ve been served better as just single, ongoing episodes on each of the movie DVD releases that both tie into the main movie plot and also tell a separate story to build on the team dynamic and how they handle and cope with the super-powered threats and incidents.

    • Will everyone shut their mouths and enjoy other shows if they don’t like this one? the fact that people anger and mockk at it makes me laugh. Its a freaking TV show, what were you guys expecting!??! This makes more news than Arrow, not that I have anything against that but still. And the fact you brought up Iron Man 3 scares me, did you not like it because of the twist? If so you need to move on,Iron Man 3 was a great movie with a great twist, sure the Mandarin was disappointing turnabout but come on…get over it. Same with AoS you were obviously expecting an Avengers 2 on tv, the show is what i was expecting, and what i was expecting wasn’t bad at all.

      • “Iron Man 3 was a great movie with a great twist”
No it wasn’t. It was a decent movie with a horrible twist that completely emasculated Iron Man’s greatest foe. As far as AOS, I watch it. It’s ok, but could be far better than it is.

      • @ Sphynx001
“Its a freaking TV show, what were you guys expecting!??!”

I was expecting Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., not Agents of One Tree Hill.

        • Haha! I just mentioned the One Tree Hill comment and now my girlfriend wants to watch AoS. “Is it really? What day is it on, do you have the episodes on PVR?”

Maybe the show would be more interesting if they start killing off some main characters. Kill Coulson. Dead twice in a year, now that’s bad luck.

Introduce a third Coulson. A clone of a clone is never quite as sharp as the original.

        • lol sad but true

  2. When do they start writing new episodes?

  3. rly more whining about this show? No episode this week and yet still complaints….ffs.

  4. I personally like the show with or without the crossovers! But yes at some point it would be cool for traditional Marvel heroes to make an appearance. Every show nowadays is just a repeat of something somebody has already done. This is something new for the three major networks to take on! Hope it last!

  5. Jonathan Frakes directing. Cool! Looking forward to see what he does with the episode.

  6. And yet another writer here who was touched in a naughty place by AoS.

Seriously, give it a rest already.

    • I’m glad to know there are people in Fantasy Land who enjoy this show and like to insult writers of articles that have legit gripes with a dismal show.

      • +1 to you, Dazz.

  7. Why do we need a show about SHIELD’s clean up crew?

  8. The frostmonster that got left on earth? They probably wont have the cgi budget for that.

    • How exciting! Please make it happen DC.

    • that’s tight , I can just see all the marvel and dc fan boys thinking about taking their lifes over this news. its so great on many levels. I have no problem with her being both lady sif and wonder woman. I always looked at dc and marvel as being two different realities 9 (not competing against each other just two worlds on the same plan but in different dimensions)this will work great

      • Agreed, if this were reality and not a movie universe(which DC and Marvel DON’T share dimensions) would concern me but it doesn’t! I think they mind as well hit the hunger in my stomach and do this!

  9. At least throw Denning’s character in to episode,or even her intern. If they don’t use anyone from the Thor film it’s pretty embarrassing

  10. ” (…) which threatens to destroy a member of the team.”

please NO THREATS, just kill the first one of the team already! yeah, it can be skye. she’s useless anyway.

it may well have a thor cameo… on one of shield’s monitor. (cheaper mode)

it would be cool if they ask selvig to join the team and since they are heading to london leave those teen scientists with their parents.

    • yes please drop the kids off

      • They’re the only good things about the show though.

        • is this a joke?

mumbling scared scientists that deal with Black Ops (if Shield is still black ops)….it might just be me but i can’t understand British accents especially when they talk fast like they are on meth

          • Wow, really? You can’t understand them?

They’re pretty much the most easy to understand Brit accents in TV. Fitz has that Scottish accent that you can tell is used by someone who had to tone down their accent to be understood in whatever drama he’s acting in and Simmons has the same kind of lack of accent you hear on news broadcasts for the same reason.

Neither of them mumble whatsoever and have the clearest, most understandable accents I’ve ever heard. Neither of them talk fast either.

I dare you to find a clip of Rab C Nesbitt on youtube and find out for yourself what a real Scottish accent sounds like.

            • Have you ever thought about the possibility that there are people who watch this show, whose native language isn´t English? Every now and then, I have trouble understanding heavy british or irish accents, too.

            • i understand them to a certain extent, i’m in Canada i can’t understand half of what people from Newfoundland say which is close to Irish.

English is my second language so…

              • I guess they should only make TV shows where the entire cast speak with polished north american accents, as to accommodate for people who don’t speak English as a first language…

    • I just watched an episode of AOS where Skye was in her bra and panties, and believe me, it brought me to life, that is for sure. The character may not be much, but she sure looked good there!

I enjoy this show, but it is not the show that conquered the world by any means. It was never meant to be a big tent-pole, tho, just the side salad and not the main meat and potatoes course. Entertaining, not cerebral. Could use some fine-tuning, tho. I would introduce Moon Knight and Heroes For Hire on this show pronto, Tonto, before it gets cancelled. That might save it as a spin-off vehicle. For once Marvel could take a page from the DC book (now that is different!), even though I, who love The Flash, was not sure if launching Flash through Arrow was a good idea or not (I am hopeful, but jury is kind of still out since I saw the “kiddie-star” they will be using). Fitz and Simmons and Skye do not thrill me, Melinda May has been less than I anticipated, but Coulson and Ward are basically OK. Not setting my expectations bar too high on this show, so it is falling about where I thought it would, but I am basically enjoying it and will watch it to it’s demise. I do not think it will get more than one, or possibly two, sesons, tho.

    • Would anyone really care if a member of the team was killed off?

    • I felt the same way about Skye (useless) but she also gives the story a twist which makes me want to see more

    • Selvig would be a great add on….

  11. Now that they have revealed that Thor is gay there will be a lot of story lines to tie up. It’s truly great marketing to bring a superhero out of the closet , kudos to marvel. Cant wait for wonder woman 2. Flame on!

    • Where the hell you get that from? Thor isnt gay /

    • wtf? did he have his way with batmans equiptmonk?

    • Last I heard, Thor banged a girl….with his HAMMER so how can he be gay?…Maybe it was your fantasy dream that came to surface….

      • Guys, don´t feed the troll. He´s obviously trying to compensate his own homosexuality by outing others.

        • Hehehehehe…that was funny, but anyways I wasnt the Troll I fed the Troll AKA Jim Douglass…again that was funny!

  12. Thor is gay? Whoa cool!

  13. Jonathan Frakes should just write himself into the episode as Riker from the future and sleep with all the women on the show

  14. Or Riker can come onto the show, also reveal he is gay, convert Thor to being gay and get into a Dynasty slap fight with Portman over him.

The ratings would go through the roof I predict.

    • Tachyon and Jim Douglass…

You two just aren’t too bright, are you? Nope.

      • As bright as pointing out how unbright we are, if unbright we be?

Its called a joke dude, but alas, sometimes if you shine to bright you can’t see any other light around you so everyone looks dim.

        Keep shining my brother. LOL.

  15. No more cameos. How about improve the writing, re-cast the characters, and give people a reason to watch every week. Ill go ahead and say it.. Maybe he writers and producers of AOS are not as talented as Blacklist, Person of Interest, and even Burn Notice.

    • Thing is, Jed and his wife ARE talented (they were exec producers of Spartacus, along with Sam Raimi), it’s just that Jed’s being weighed down by his less talented brother Joss on this show.

They need to stop making it feel like another Joss show and vastly improve the quality in all areas (writing, acting, visual tone) so it doesn’t come across as another Joss-helmed cheese-fest.

I know he only wrote and directed the pilot but the writers since then have seemed to follow his lead and it just doesn’t work. You can have a semi-serious show that appeals to all generations without it coming across as pointless fluff like this show.

      • “Thing is, Jed and his wife ARE talented.” Yes, they are. But unfortunatly, their supervisor is Jeph Loeb. The guy that ruined 10 great years of Ultimate Marvel with just one mini series.

  16. Actually, if the producers recast the show, and replaced the writers the show would still suck. The fatal flaw of this series is the premise, (followed by the poor casting). We as fans are not interested in watching an exercise in team building. The team building process does not amaze us, and to be completely honest – the Extremis sub-plot is kind of boring.

Marvel should be using Television to give its fans 30 minute tales of chilling suspense. Use this venue to build cult followings, and then branch off into higher budget spin offs that have mass appeal.

    • Don’t speak as if you’re the voice of the people.

      • Precisely. I’m hearing a lot of people complaining because Agents of Shield isn’t delivering what they wanted from the show. But personally, I’m loving every episode.

This sort of reminds of Torchwood. Torchwood was a spinoff from Doctor Who and there were plenty of Doctor Who fans, myself included, who thought it was trash. However, it got its own set of fans, many of whom were actually bigger fans of Torchwood than they were of Doctor Who.

Its nice to see that Agents of Shield is going to keep up its connection with the Marvel movies, but I don’t need Loki to appear in the show. And I like that, in the end, Agents of Shield isn’t really about superheroes. It’s about ordinary people living in a world where superheroes exist. It’s about Agent Coulson facing up to the bizarre world of Marvel superheroes calmly, rationally and giving a sly smirk. Awesome.

I also don’t understand the “Legend of Korra” hate either btw…

        • “Agents of Shield isn’t really about superheroes. It’s about ordinary people living in a world where superheroes exist.”

That set-up requires characters with super powers to be a part of the show, so critics will still bring up the lack of more (or better known) super powered or gimmick character. One thing I did notice during the Scorch episode is that they kind of established there were “not that many” super-powered characters that they presumably know of. What ever the initial premise in the minds of the producers by tacking the Avengers and Marvel name all over the show they did put it in a lot of peoples minds that something more could be going on.

      • I’m not speaking for the ‘people’, i am speaking for comic book readers and movie goers that are familiar with S.H.I.E.L.D. This television program is not introducing us to the agency; we understand that this show is a piss poor representation of the comics.

    • Nope, the show itself is terrible, the premise is actually pretty good. The payoff lets everything down.

The first arc in The New Avengers for example is a team building story about Electro breaking prisoners out of The Raft and Captain America, Spider-Man, Spider Woman, Luke Cage, The Sentry, Wolverine and Iron Man join forces to become a new team and put some of the villains away.

That story was great and helped create and establish a new team in 8 issues.

Team building can and does work as long as the writing and delivery doesn’t suck like it does on AOS.

      • That…was just such a horrible counter example. Please stop.

      • Most of the views are familiar with the Marvel Universe, they know that S.H.I.E.L.D is no place for incompetent misfits; therefore, S.H.I.E.L.D is an extremely poor setting for a coming of age story.

The premise (misfits coming together to build a team) does not fit the backdrop being that S.H.I.E.L.D is a ‘Men in Black’ type of agency where misfits would not be welcome, let alone be assigned important missions.

        The premise is totally unbelievable.

  17. I watch this show and I just don’t have any hopes for it. it is the go between of all of marvel’s upcoming projects. it has modest eye candy and some action. but the show just doesn’t feel smoothed out at all. it is marvel meets csi/ x-files….

  18. Its true that Thor being gay is a definite game changer. Likely will have a lasting effect on Avengers 2 as Nick Fury’s been rumoured to have gay tendencies. Oh how subversive Hollywood is!

  19. I can’t help but notice that Screenrant’s been getting more and more condescending in their articles of AOS. Not that I take any offense from it, though. I’m also disappointed in this series; it could have been much better, it really should have.

I think this is one of the downsides of shared universe. Maybe they can’t have super-exciting stuffs happen in Agents of SHIELD in fear of continuity errors and stories becoming too confusing for audience. It’s not like we can’t have all the nice things, instead we shouldn’t.

    • It would be better if someone involved in the movies also oversaw the TV show’s continuity, advised them on developments in future movies and made them companion pieces.

Or, like I said, have one-off AOS episodes on DVD releases attached to particular movies.

      • Isn’t Joss Whedon the executive producer of AOS? Ins’t he also overseeing Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic?

        • I meant someone other than him. Someone with more time on their hands to be involved in both more actively but mostly the TV show rather than the movies.

It’d be like me having a team of people working on movies and a TV show. I’d have one guy overseeing the movies and making sure they all fit continuity. Another guy who works on the movies in a smaller role but the TV show in a bigger role to make sure the show fits the movie continuity while another oversees both things but isn’t actively helping create the worlds shown in the Kevin Feige role.

For instance, Sam Raimi was exec producer of Spartacus alongside Jed Whedon but it was Robert Tapert who had his hands all over the show, not them.

  20. Thor is not gay quite saying that Captain America yes gay but Thor no gay.

  21. I guess they are assuming that everyone will have already seen Thor within the first week of its release. Yes, I know most are fortunate to be able to do this, but I am recovering from back surgery so it wont be possible. I wonder if there will be spoilers??

  22. Or this could have a negative effect, like all the people who don’t have time or money to go see the Thor movie will either put off watching more episodes till they finally see the movie or not watch it because it might contain spoilers for the movie.

    • That was my point. I can’t physically get to the theater so I will have no clue what is going on. To be honest, I’m stealing a crap torrent as we speak, but it sucks I have to watch this horrible home video quality version of the movie. FML

      • I guess you might have to do what I do here on SR sometimes and wait however many weeks until you get to see what’s being talked about and join in the conversation almost a month after people have stopped talking about it (only just managed to read the episode review for episode 1 of AHS earlier today after the episode aired here on Tuesday night and I got to watch it in the early hours of Saturday morning).

It sucks but hey, best you can do.

Failing that, wait until a DVD quality version of Thor is available online and watch then and don’t waste your time with AOS.

        • Yeah, honestly I’m not into AoS but I am the type of person who thinks it will get better. I have no evidence to back that up, just hoping. I would have thought that they would have waited at least a few weeks before tying into Thor TDW, but what do I know??

  23. I’m glad I didn’t overhype agents of shield or else I would have been really disappointed

  24. It’s a shame Warner Brothers didn’t do something similar with the Nolan Dark Knight universe; have television side quests involving the Gotham police who were featured in the trilogy.

It’s still not too late, just ignore the rebooted Batman and continue with this one because no Batman will even show up in the show anyways.

    • I’d rather they do Gotham Central in the new Batman continuity and ignored the Nolanverse so we can have minor villains like Mad Hatter, Lock-Up, Firefly and others while the movies deal with the bigger villains like Riddler, Hush, Joker etc.

      • Hell, Gotham can target the Falcone family and Black Mask’s mob as the main villains.

  25. Haven´t you been banned from commenting?

  26. This show had so much potential, but the rushed it on to TV with mediocre stories, stereotype characters, and no chemistry between the cast. The fact that they are counting on a crossover with Thor 2 to boost ratings just shows this show won’t last, but I doubt they will stop trying to push it on everyone. For me, the 2 1/2 minute trailer of Captain America 2 was better than every episode they have made so far.

  27. LMFAO!!!

The fact that so many of you claim to not have time or money (come on? 15 to 20 bucks lol) to go to a movie theater as soon as a movie comes out, yet you have time to sit on a website and criticize the very things you can’t afford to see all day speaks VOLUMES about the value of your state of mind and the value of your opinions. Of course you’re going to have a great rationalization for why u “dont suck.” but again. Who cares what you say? lol.

    Just thought you should know.

    • sitting on the internet is free and going to the movies is $20. And you cant figure out why we can afford one and not the other?

  28. Wait a minute! Thor is gay?!
