Cobie Smulders Agent Maria Hill SHIELD TV Show Cobie Smulders Is Interested in a Bigger Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Role for Maria Hill

With the much-anticipated premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. coming next month, Marvel fans won’t have to wait much longer to see the return of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) after his apparent death in The Avengers.

A few weeks back, we learned that another Avengers character – Agent Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) – would be making an appearance in the premiere episode, but there were mixed reports as to how big her role on the show would end up being. While she is still only confirmed to appear in the pilot, many fans and news outlets have speculated that she could become a recurring star or even a series regular.

Fortunately, a recent interview with Smulders (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter) has provided some insight into the possibility of an expanded role.

According to Smulders:

“I’m up for [a bigger role on 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'], it’s just a matter of the direction that they decide to go with the show. I don’t know how much they’ll be at the Command Center and how much they need me around. If it works out organically with the storyline, then I’d be happy to come in but I truly don’t know.”

Considering Smulders’ would be one of the more recognizable actors on the new series, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Whedon clan secured Smulders for more episodes. But will she really want to commit to another TV series after HIMYM concludes its ninth and final season next year?

Said Smulders:

“It’s hard to say. I’m planning a big move to New York, so that’s a pretty huge factor in doing another series in Los Angeles. This is the joy and the terror of coming off of a show after nine years: What should I do, what should I not do?! If the right project comes along, of course I’d return to TV. But I’d like to focus in film and on theater right now.”

While her desire to focus on film and stage work may seem discouraging to fans looking forward to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., she did mention that she enjoyed working with Joss Whedon and his family on the pilot and that that relationship would likely be the most attractive thing about joining the series.

“I was so excited to work with Joss again and to meet his brother, Jed, and his wife Maurissa and get to hang out with them again. They’re all geniuses. Joss sent me my scenes and it was so great to see this character interacting in a different way and to basically get to tell the world that Coulson is ‘alive’ and back with a TV show where you can watch him every week. I was excited about that more than anything.”

Her responses from the interview certainly don’t give fans any concrete answers, but now that we know where she stands, it sounds like an arrangement could be hashed out for more Maria Hill episodes as long as it fits Smulders’ upcoming schedule.

  1. Hope she becomes a regular

    • I don’t. She was the campiest and most unnecessary character in the original Avengers.

What exactly are you wanting more of? Generic lines? A mailed in performance?

      • Generic lines?

        Blame the writer.

        Mailed in performance?

Blame the director for not bothering to make her deliver her lines with more enthusiasm.

  2. Typo for los Angeles ;)

    • I hope she doesn’t photobomb every scene. she needs to be more of a behind the scenes pulling strings agent, and pop in when **** goes down….

  3. Can’t wait for this show and I’m all in for more Hill.

    • Yeah, like hair really is significant to the story. -__-

  5. I really hope n wish that Cobie/Robin gets a regular slot on the show..
    1) to show a known member (familiar face) from the avengers cast (as I don’t think there will be many cameos of the supers in this)
    2) Cobie Smulders kicks ass. Period.

  6. It’d be nice for her to get a big role if they take the “Maria Hill takes over SHIELD when Fury leaves” route in future. Get her established that way so it’s less of a shock when a previously minor character suddenly becomes top dog.

    • Good point Dazz

    • She along with Clark Gregg would be a perfect medium to connect the TV with the big screen. They have both been supporting characters in other movies and TV, and they could share the lead for this.

  7. She’s hot. The show needs her.

  8. I would think Smulders would be a nice character to build on for the continuity for the TV Show. Between her character and Clark Gregg’s, they could have the central point of a team between them. She would handle the ship and the crew where Gregg’s character would be whatever new event would happen in the field.
That being said, I would love for Marvel to take their experience from the movies and bring it to TV. Joss Whedon would consider making a couple of TV shows and then every now and then do a cross over between them. Like he did on Buffy and Angel.
He could have a lawyer show with Matt Murdock(Daredevil) and Jennifer Lewis (She-Hulk) then maybe a 3rd of characters from Heroes for higher, Luke Cage(power-man), Danny Rand (Iron Fist) Misty Knight (street detective) and Jessica Drew (Spider-woman – agent of shield). All of these characters have had ties with S.H.I.E.L.D. They all have their own alter ego bad guys and could make into some very interesting stories that could be told on TV.

  9. Yeah I’m sure she does, HIMYM is ending after this upcoming season. She’ll need a job.

  10. Aww, I’d love for Colbie to take the role as Maria Hill again. =D I love her so much hahaha

  11. I think they should have Agent Hill return as a regular and become the director of SHIELD. After the events of Winter Soldier Coulson will need Agent Hill’s help if he hopes to rebuild SHIELD & stop Hydra.
