With the much-anticipated premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. coming next month, Marvel fans won’t have to wait much longer to see the return of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) after his apparent death in The Avengers.
A few weeks back, we learned that another Avengers character – Agent Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) – would be making an appearance in the premiere episode, but there were mixed reports as to how big her role on the show would end up being. While she is still only confirmed to appear in the pilot, many fans and news outlets have speculated that she could become a recurring star or even a series regular.
According to Smulders:
“I’m up for [a bigger role on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’], it’s just a matter of the direction that they decide to go with the show. I don’t know how much they’ll be at the Command Center and how much they need me around. If it works out organically with the storyline, then I’d be happy to come in but I truly don’t know.”
Considering Smulders’ would be one of the more recognizable actors on the new series, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Whedon clan secured Smulders for more episodes. But will she really want to commit to another TV series after HIMYM concludes its ninth and final season next year?
“It’s hard to say. I’m planning a big move to New York, so that’s a pretty huge factor in doing another series in Los Angeles. This is the joy and the terror of coming off of a show after nine years: What should I do, what should I not do?! If the right project comes along, of course I’d return to TV. But I’d like to focus in film and on theater right now.”
While her desire to focus on film and stage work may seem discouraging to fans looking forward to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., she did mention that she enjoyed working with Joss Whedon and his family on the pilot and that that relationship would likely be the most attractive thing about joining the series.
“I was so excited to work with Joss again and to meet his brother, Jed, and his wife Maurissa and get to hang out with them again. They’re all geniuses. Joss sent me my scenes and it was so great to see this character interacting in a different way and to basically get to tell the world that Coulson is ‘alive’ and back with a TV show where you can watch him every week. I was excited about that more than anything.”
Her responses from the interview certainly don’t give fans any concrete answers, but now that we know where she stands, it sounds like an arrangement could be hashed out for more Maria Hill episodes as long as it fits Smulders’ upcoming schedule.
