When fan-favorite supporting character Agent Phil Coulson stood up to the villainous Loki in The Avengers, no one saw the memorable confrontation ending the way it did. Thanks to Joss Whedon, Coulson didn’t make it out alive but his sacrifice motivated Earth’s Mightiest into joining together as The Avengers and saving New York from an alien invasion.

For months after The Avengers broke box office records around the world, the most diehard of Marvel fans started a “Coulson lives” campaign – one that convinced Marvel and Joss Whedon to not only bring actor Clark Gregg back to continue playing the role, but to lead his own show titled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Of all the stories Whedon could have selected to launch a live-action Marvel series on ABC, we knew from the beginning that one centering on covert S.H.I.E.L.D. organization made the most sense. It not only allows for new, original stories to be told while not being beholden to specific Marvel Comics stories, but it can do so without interfering with the Marvel films. It shares the same universe as the films and can take advantage of crossover opportunities while also serving as a platform to launch potential spinoff programs. It’s the beginning of something larger and the Whedon name and Marvel brand made it obvious from the beginning that ABC would pick up the pilot for a season order, and they did. We don’t yet know how many episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air, beginning this fall, but the marketing campaign begins today.

Agents of SHIELD TV Commercial Coulson Lives in First Epic Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Spot

During the season 2 finale of Once Upon a Time, ABC aired the first exciting TV spot for the Marvel TV show [watch up top]- the first program developed by Marvel Studios and the first series that shares the same space as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It takes place after The Avengers, and stars Clark Gregg returning from the “dead” as Phil Coulson, with a cast including Ming-Na Wen (ER) as Agent Melinda May, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Brett Dalton (Killing Lincoln) as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet (Nashville) as Skye.

The production values are high for the pilot, reminiscent of the Marvel One-Shots featured on the home video releases of Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and The Avengers. We’ve selected some stills from the teaser, featuring shots reused from The Avengers, along with some revealing imagery of super-powered people, including someone who can explode. Also note the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on the cargo plane – perhaps a mobile base for Coulson’s team?

The answer to how Coulson returns for the post-Avengers TV show will be answered in the pilot and Clark Gregg told us there’s definitely an element of deception at play while Marvel high-ups including Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon hinted that it’s a certainty that Coulson will eventually make a return in the films as well.

We were also told that SHIELD’s absence in Iron Man 3 – one of the criticisms from fans – will be explained in the other Phase Two movies, which most refers to the SHIELD-focused Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If that’s the case, the stories of SHIELD in between The Avengers 1 & 2, along with Captain America 2 may spillover or have an impact on the show. How Whedon – the overseer of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – accomplishes this remains to be seen.

  1. Introduce Moon Knight? Or is that a little too out there for an idea?

  2. Great write up. The preview was a little more effects heavy than I expected, but it shows that the show probably has a decent budget.

I skimmed through a good portion of the comments, and I didn’t see anyone mention this but, Joss Whedon came out a little while back and said he wasn’t the reason why Coulson died. I mean, he was in the director’s chair and he has defended the decision, but he said he got the orders to ax Coulson from Feige. Whether or not it was Feige’s idea, I don’t know. I’d have to listen to the Avenger’s commentary again.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go admire my paper clip collection and admire pigeons.

  3. Looks horrible. If Robert Downys not in it I dont care. And neither do most people, just look at box office returns for marvel movies with and without him.

    • That kinda sounds like you’re trying to bait people. Every marvel movie so far has been a big hit with the exception of the Incredible Hulk. Just varying degrees of success.

The show looks very very good

    • Haha not true at all, RDJ may be a big player in the movies but he’s not above everyone else.

    • *Insert troll gif here*

    • Wrong!

    • Obvious trolling. Shame on you sir. Shame.

      • hahahahaha Marvel movies all successes?! Thor and captain america barely made their budgets back. Sorry marvel fanboys…look up the box office returns. 180 mill domestic return on a 150 mill budget does not a success make.

  4. Exploding man… Well Marvel does have the rights to Ghost Rider again, cant really see it being human torch since he’s still owned by fox, unless its the original one

  5. Im sure colby smulders will show up at somepoint right?

  6. Looks interesting, but it’s hard to tell much from this.

One thing to note: Whedon specifically said in the Avengers DVD commentary that killing Coulson was not his idea and that he knew he’d catch flack for it anyway.

  7. Cool, I like the look of this I can’t wait for the series to start, it will be an event in my house.

Fingers crossed for an epic title tune over the credits, something memorable and edgy like Brian Tyler did for Iron Man 3 (see track “Stark” on IM3 soundtrack)

  8. Other than J. August Richards, do you all think other former Whedon TV actors and actresses could be cast in the show? I would love to see the lovely Ms. Eliza Dushku back on TV kicking ass.

    • ^^^+100 to this

  9. Sony owns the films rights but what about TV? I think Marvel, aka Disney, owns the TV rights to Spider-Man. That’s why you see Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD.

  10. I find myself interested in this show but what is it going to be. Is this going to be a freak of the week show like the early seasons of smallville or are we going to get stories concerning B and C list marvel characters. Also I keep hearing rumors that other characters in the marvel universe are going to introduced on the show first and then transferred over to the movies.

  11. If marvel has the rights to Xmen and Spiderman on the small screen, dose that mean the exploding guy could be Nitro?

  12. LUKE CAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Exploding man?!? Nitro anybody? My dream is for an eventually Civil War movie coming after Avengers 3 maybe an early intro to Nitro in this show could help set that up. People say they won’t watch but honestly if you’re a comic fan or anyone with similar interests how many watchable shows are there? Even if this show isn’t my dream for a marvel tv project it’s still better than 99% of TV out there. With Dexter and Breaking Bad ending soon I hope this show leads to more…Marvel Knights on HBO? Ghost Rider, Blade, Punisher and Daredevil all recently bought back by marvel! Coincidence? Already own Moon Knight I think that could be an interesting live action show. Anyway trailer looks good, still not thrilled about the Coulson revival but it’s marvel and comics so it’s typical they refuse to let him die lol. I think introducing Wendall Vaughn and using him as the lead for the show could have been the perfect way to set up a Quasar intro for phase 2 but more likely phase 3. Still looking forward to the show however!

  16. I really hope the black guy in the yellow pants jumping out of the window is Luke Cage! Agents of SHIELD is the perfect place for street-level heroes and villains. Not that a show about the agents is not awesome on its own!

I mean Thor and Iron Man and Hulk. They’re the big shots, they handle global threats and such. But smaller super-powered criminals? Bring in SHIELD and the heroes of the streets. Heroes for Hire, Punisher, maybe even Daredevil (they have the rights back after all).

No clue, who the guy on fire (exploding guy) is, but it looks very interesting. Can’t wait to see this. I hope we get a normal 22-23 episode season. :D

  17. Hope this is better than Arrow, god that’s dreadful.

  18. man i hope that was luke cage with the yellow pants on

  19. That wasn’t Nitro or some other exploding character. Its a holographic reconstruction of an explosion. Probably a case they are trying to figure out not unlike CSI

  20. If that isn’t Luke Cage I’ll be shocked. Really lame poster aside – “Agent Colson and the TWEENY EXPRESS” this show has some serious nerdgasmic potential.

  21. anyone see this site? looks like the viral marketing has continued http://www.wearetherisingtide.com/blog/

  22. Can’t wait… looking forward to it!

  23. Who is the guy who jumped out of the window?

  24. Don’t Touch Lola!!! (lmao)

Phil so good to see you!!! – Pepper

His first name is Agent…? Since when is he Phil? – Stark

  25. It looks good! I hope they’re able to replicate what Heroes did during its first season!

  26. I’m not so sure about this…not a lot to go on here, but something just doesn’t feel quite right. But, I’m also of the opinion that superhero shows just don’t work on TV. I didn’t like Smallville, can’t get into Arrow, and can’t really think of any comic book made for TV adaption that really worked for me. I’ll watch this though, it deserves a shot.

    • Forgot to add, everything that looks really good about this, is just a clip from Avengers.

  27. It seems to me they’ll be inventing many characters rather than using marvel characters. They can’t really use goliath, wonder man, untron, yellow jacket, jocasta, etc. because they may conflict with future avengers crossover plans with antman. They can’t use hulk, thor, cap or iron man… they’re movie stars now. And their movies claim most of the characters related to those four so…. where does that leave shield?

Maybe there could be a storyline with Swordsman or the Black Knight.

The Serpent Society? But they may be saved for a Cap 3 movie.

Doctor Druid? but he’s probably too much like Dr. Strange for Kevin Feige’s liking.

Sider-woman, luke cage (as they teaser shows), Moon Knight, Daredevil are likely to appear, as they have no conflict with the marvel universe.

I know there were many other shield-based characters in Marvel through the years, but no one as prominant as the ones they can’t use. Mostly 3rd tier characters.

    • There’s plenty of Marvel heroes lol. I doubt there is a shortage of stories or characters in the marvel universe lol

  28. Not liking the fact that Coulson seems to be the only member of SHIELD that is over 30. It must be easy to become one of the most secret of secret agents in the world, since 4 out of 6 of them appear to have just finished puberty…

  29. Im pretty sure that Coulsons death was thought up by Kevin Feige after he saw Star Trek where they killed Spocks mother and he decided that they had to do that
