What’s Next For ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’?

Published 5 months ago by

[Warning: This post is loaded with spoilers if you're not caught up with Marvel's Agents of SHIELD]

If you missed Episode 17 (“Turn, Turn, Turn”) of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last week on ABC, then you missed the series’ most important and arguably its best episode to date. The show and its cast will forever be changed after HYDRA unveiled themselves and sleeper agents we thought we could trust all of a sudden became villains.

With SHIELD in shambles, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team are on their own, cut off from other still-functional units in the organization. With no clear directive from high-ups, Coulson and his allies are left up to their own devices to do what they can in battling HYDRA and – hopefully for fans – uncovering the mysteries surrounding the origins and near-death recoveries of Coulson and Skye, the latter of which was labeled a “0-8-4″ (object of unknown origin) as a youth for still-unexplained reasons. The video up top features the cast reacting to what went down in last wee’s episode.

In the remaining five episodes, viewers need some closure on the blue alien reveal and what it means for the show’s future and specifically, the future of the two characters in question when it comes to their roles in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. For now, we look forward to episode 18 (“Providence”) which airs tomorrow at a later time (9pm EST) following a re-run of last week’s game-changer.

If you missed it, ABC and Marvel have begun releasing limited edition posters as part of The Art of Level Seven (#TheArtofLevel7). Last week’s maze-inspired design can be seen here and below is the latest by artist Paolo Rivera, debuted by EW, and representing the fall of SHIELD and the rise of HYDRA.

Limited Edition Poster for episode 18 (“Providence” )

And for a sneak peek preview of the episode check out the exclusive from The Wrap which makes a very big deal out of Raina aka “The Girl in the Flower Dress” (Ruth Negga) getting back her dress as ex-Agent Ward, a full-blown HYDRA operative, breaks her out of containment. It’s an odd moment considering the character isn’t from the comics and there doesn’t seem to be anything special about the dress that we know of…

The official synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 18 reveals that this is the first episode where fans will meet Glenn Talbot, a character from the comics who helps General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross in hunting down the Hulk. He’ll be played by Adrian Pasdar (Heroes). We’ll also meet Eric Koenig (Patton Oswalt), another agent of SHIELD.

“Providence” – With Colonel Glenn Talbot now on their trail, Coulson and his team seek refuge in the last place anyone would look, where they begin to uncover S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most dangerous secrets–secrets that could destroy them all, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Guest starring are Bill Paxton as Agent John Garrett, David Conrad as Ian Quinn, Adrian Pasdar as US Air Force Colonel Glenn Talbot, Ruth Negga as Raina, B.J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett, Patton Oswalt as Agent Eric Koenig, Patrick Brennan as Marcus Daniels, Rich Paul as Agent #1, Bayardo De Murguia as Agent #2, Kylie Furneaux as Agent, Jeffrey Muller as Agent, Pia Shah as female scientist, Alex Goode as hacker, Alysha Del Valle as ABC reporter, Ramon Hilario as barber and Patrick Quinlan as guard.

As for last week’s episode, there are many questions raised or left hanging so we’ll do our best to address some of the ones we had ourselves. In an interview with IGNAgents of SHIELD executive producers Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell address some of them – here are the highlights:

  • Clairvoyant Identity - We’ll find out who the clairvoyant really is in this week’s episode.
  • More Twists – expect another “dramatic shift” before the end of the season.
  • Brett Dalton – the actor who plays Agent Ward only found out about his HYDRA background a few episodes before filming.
  • Victoria Hand – Ward shot Hand three times at the conclusion of last week’s episode, but did he really kill here? Bell: “Ward definitely killed them.”
  • Coulson – Is he the de facto leader of SHIELD now that Hand is dead? No, “SHIELD satellites have been compromised” so they simply don’t know who else is out there. Remember, a certain someone is making an appearance in the season finale
  • Glenn Talbot – why is this Air Force character being introduced now? Loeb: “This will start out as something very small, and then people will see where that’s headed.” Could his arc lead into a story regarding Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and The Avengers: Age of Ultron?
  • Agent 13 – could  EmilyVanCamp’s character from Captain America: The Winter Soldier appear in the show? Loeb: “Let’s just put it this way: everybody in the Marvel Universe is always up for grabs.”
  • Coulson Alive – None of The Avengers know Coulson is alive yet.

There you have it. A few answers and a lot of questions. Although there’s been little talk of it, I’d expect Coulson to show up in The Avengers: Age of Ultron so the crew can know he’s alive – but then again, Samuel L. Jackson described his role in the sequel as minimal, as if it’s a cameo since S.H.I.E.L.D. has a lesser role to play now for obvious reasons. With characters such as Talbot showing up in the show, perhaps Agents of SHIELD is laying some groundwork for the films – from Hulk connections and HYDRA (that we’ve already seen) to the blue alien which may tie-in with Guardians of the Galaxy. Are you going to be tuning in for the remaining episodes?

For fun: Dalton has embraced his role – check out his Twitter logo:

  1. Bearded guy in the stills. Hrm… wonder who that is?

Another important question Rob: Who’s guarding Blonski’s cell NOW?

    =0o

    • If Blonski was taken to the Fridge, it is still under control of loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. They mention that briefly in the episode.
That’s probably where this episode will be. Rana is probably locked up there, along with Graviton, etc.

  2. Ward is the Clairvoyant, because we never saw Garret talking, and that’s because Ward was reading his mind. Then, he slowing pushed Garret’s thoughts out of his mind.

    • WRONG.

      I, am the Clairvoyant.

      x0D

  3. This show sucks. Watched a 1/2 hr of the 1st episode and couldn’t take anymore of it.

    • cool story, BRO

    • Who asked for your opinion. If your not a fan get lost!

      • Apparently the website asked for his opinion where it offers to submit your comment at the end of the article jizz dumpster

        • Yep.

This whole “if you’re not a fan, get lost” stuff is like saying “if you don’t agree with me, you deserve death”. Completely immature.

I also have to disagree with Rob below me because the first half hour of episode 1 was still pretty ok-ish due to it being a new show (nothing was happening but you can sometimes forgive that with shows aimed at teens) but still felt more entertaining than the last few episodes have been.

I’m guessing the excitement is coming from the Easter eggs they’re forced to add to the show rather than the writing or acing being improved. Kinda like watching Batman & Robin back before 2005 knowing how terrible it is but not wanting to switch off because you don’t know if you’ll ever see the characters on the screen in live action ever again.

          • What Dazz? I dislike the whole dismissing for disagreeing, but how did you relate that to death? That makes no sense.

          • @Dazz

Is this show killed your dog or something? why are you on a crusade against it?
Do you also go on YouTube to a videos of a bands you don’t Like just so you can say they suck?
I am really wondering about that here because from all the people watching it or not your are number one responded on AoS related articles in this site.

I agree that “if you’re not a fan, get lost” is a little bit immature but isn’t watching a show you hate 17 weeks in a row only so you can say it still suck even worse? I mean he got a point this article is clearly just for the show fans. It’s not related to the Cinematic universe or to any other program so why
you and another guy that watched 30 minutes and hated it even bother wasting you time?

I’m really hoping for an answer here because as I said on other articles about this show we really come here just to talk about shows and films we love and even learn more about them not to bash each other shows (or they viewers as you done on multiple occasions)

          • Well, it is just sad that people don’t have something better in their life but to trash talk things. That’s ok though. All the hipsters are doing it.

    • I’d say the first 30 minutes of the pilot is not at all representative of what the last few eps have been like.

    • Wow, then why bother coming here to *troll* comment? You should’ve done that when the discussion was about ‘episode 1′ o_o

    • A 1/2 hour of the 1st episode? Oh yeah, pal, you really know what you’re talking about!

  4. It almost seems like the showrunners are swapping out Agent Ward for Agent Triplett… perhaps to make the cast a little more diverse?

    • I hope so, I like Ward better as the villain.

      • Would certainly not mind that. Ward as a villain works for me, he was rather boring.

  5. This is another reason Marvel’s in trouble T.V. wise. They are tossing the Shield agents into the background now, because they feel there’s no dynamic character arcs and are afraid of them getting into further movies.

Lets face it, people go see all the Avengers movies to see Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk or Hawkeye. They don’t go there to watch Agent Grays, Sitwell or Coulson. Which is a problem for Marvel because so far, well they can’t make them too interesting. In the books these characters were a lot more dynamic and fought super villains. And I’m not suggesting anything, but if Fox did do a TV show with x-men characters like jubilee and polaris fighting the Geyricks..they’d be more successful. Those are deeper characters.

    • There are plenty of people who enjoy these side-characters and secondary (if you wanna call it that) villains. They’re doing just fine with Coulson and all them. People have actually grown to love (and have loved) Coulson for a long, long time. So I don’t see your point. If AOS wasn’t successful, it would’ve been taken off the air.

Marvel is obviously doing something right, and all you want to do is see them fail. They’re so confident in their show that they’re doing Agent Carter and those Netflix shows.

You DO realize that this is Marvel’s first ‘official’ TV series, right? There has not been a live-action Marvel Television series (that I know of) to air on TV.

      DC, sure… but Marvel? Nope.

So stop hating for no reason. These characters have depth, and I don’t know if you know but, Fox’s track record for TV shows isn’t long-standing besides their animated shows. Gotham is coming to FOX, but everyone is so/so on it because of the changes made. I also doubt that Fox would ever make an X-Men TV series due to budgetary concerns.

      • Fox could easy make an X-Men TV show….they did in the 90s with the series Generation Next. t had some of th highest ratings. It funny ow AoS fnboys love to dump on Singer and en, yet they had better TV shows ten years ago…

        • Generation X (not Generation Next) was a one-off tv movie that aired on Fox in the 90s. The ratings were not strong enough to warrant a tv series. The movie had some camp value but nothing more ever came of it. I think it only aired once even.

          • He probably means the spin off called Mutant something that spun off from the Generation X. It went on a 7 o’clock timeslot before star trek. Like Dexter that one ran for 2 and a half seasons and was realy good.

      • There actually was a short lived Blade tv-series that was live action :p

      • Uhhmm The Incredible Hulk was a great TV show that was very successful. I’m also pretty sure that AOS does better numbers than Arrow…

        • Why do people compare Arrow to AoS. I mean yeah its great to compare them but most people are comparing it to what Arrow is doing this season, they are a season ahead of AoS. You would have to look at the numbers from Arrow season 1 and compare.

          • The two shows are usually compared because Arrow too wasn’t that good in the beginning. And just like Arrow, AoS is getting better. It’s unfortunate that cruzcontrol39 is reducing it to numbers.

    • Let’s let Fox dig a deeper whole for the Fantastic Four before we give them time on the big kid playground, shall we? Marvel has enough stock and value to doodle with SHIELD and grow the secondary people, as they have in recent weeks.

      • That should be hole… not whole. oops! Pulled a Fox on that one…

      • hahaha what? Fox had most successful mutant show of the 90s, generation next.
they owned the place a decade ago….which makes it funnier when fanboys dump on singer. so far all AoS has done is copy law & order..

Face it fanboys, nothing about Agents of Shield has been interesting so far…

        • Generation X (not Generation Next) was a one-off tv movie that aired on Fox in the 90s. The ratings were not strong enough to warrant a tv series. The movie had some camp value but nothing more ever came of it. I think it only aired once even.

Why slam fans of a tv series created and produced by Marvel while praising a non-existent tv series based on a Marvel comic?

Agents of SHIELD has been a slow build but the storytelling is solid and the episodes all fit together. When the first season wraps and becomes available to view all at once on Netflix, I’d imagine the entire story will appear more linear to casual viewers.

    • And I think that is the problem, that people go in to the show thnking its gonna be filled with superheroes. This is supposed to show what happens behind the scenes without all these big super heroes and i think they are finally getting it right.

    • Because of AOS, and then re-watching the films, I LOVE Coulson now.

  6. Hahaha, yeah exactly! Should’ve been more like the X-Files, and less like Law & Order.

In the books Agents of Shield weren’t trying to be NCIS, or compete with NCIS all the frigging time. AoS vs NCIS is gonna lead to NCIS as the winner every time. Even the human agents used alien weapons, super powered weapons to defeat villains. This is supposedly meant to be Captain America’s backup, and they look like a group of wash outs to me.

In the 90′s fox ran a series called Generation Next, which was based off the Generation X comics and everyone tuned in to watch it. Why? Cause everyone wants to see girls who got jubilee’s super powers, and even the humans she work with! Fox canceled it, but oh man if they brought it up & cast the Juggernaut, Kitty Pryde and other mutants every week Agents of Shield would get whupped.

    • This is ABSOLUTELY NOT supposedly meant to be Captain America’s backup. This is a small ragtag cell of outcast agents and newbies learning to work together and led by someone who’s supposedly dead to the world.

  7. hmmm… Lady Siff knows Coulson is alive.. but then Thor is on Earth so I guess none of the Avengers really knows..

  8. You know, Cap2 started filming in June ’13. So the script was completed before that and that’s about when SHIELD started filming. Joss Whedon knew all of this was coming down the pipe. The entire season has been a setup for SHIELD’s destruction. knowing this, I have a lot of faith in the future of this show. The Agents of SHIELD went from being Agents of SHIELD to being THE Agents of SHIELD. They’re all that’s left.

    Gonna be a fun trip.

    • I agree that Joss has probably known all along what direction AoS was going to go. I also like the new atmosphere for the show you mentioned in the group now being THE Agents of Shield. I can’t help but wonder if SWORD will eventually get brought in or developed as a replacement to SHIELD in the TV series or the movies now that SHIELD is all but dessolved.

  9. Sooooo… what’s with that corpse?

    • It looks like it should be in an episode of Fringe.

  10. Those rumors of Hulk rampaging in south anerica for Age of Ultron are potentially misleading… Whos to say it’s not Blonsky working for Hydra now. The Fridge is were he is but clearly Ward and Co. Will take it over next ep. As thats were they were going. So were the hulkbuster armor make an appearance in age of Ultron it might be to handle Blonsky and not Hulk. Just a thought.

    • Classic misdirection, I like this.

    • I like this theory. I hope you’re right!

    • Would be awesome to see. But Hulk would have to be incapacitated, removed from play, for that to happen. Even so… the thought of Hulkbuster vs Abomination is an awesome way to see the famous armor battle it out with a Hulk-ish character, but avoiding the 2 heroes at odds thing.
Then too, we have yet to see a fight between Iron Man and Hulk. We’ll probably see heroes fighting in every movie. (Iron Man vs Thor and Hulk vs Thor in Avengers).

  11. Clairvoyant Identity: I’m still not sure he was the guy who was ‘revealed’ last week. It might work, but his motive and action towards Coulson just didn’t fit.
More Twists: Why am I suspecting Trip as someone bad well? or probably the actor has an excellent way to make him look like he’s hiding something.
Brett Dalton: Is he really Hydra, or is he a sleeper as well? Still not sure as well. He can always do that to ‘protect’ Skye from the inside.
Victoria Hand: Damn, I hate her but having her demised like that was not good, especially knowing she’s one of the good guys
Coulson: Yea, basically the SHIELD network is down and noone’s to trust. Blake is still alive since Deathlok didn’t kill him off completely.
Glenn Talbot: I think the government are trying to take over now that SHIELD is gone, we all know they (SHIELD and Thunderbolt) didn’t walk the same path when it comes to Hulk. HAMMER?
Agent 13: She’s a TV actress… so the possibility is high. That’s the benefit of having TV stars like VanCamp and Smulder I guess.
Coulson Alive: Only Sif so far knew this fact, and Coulson asked him not to tell Thor. I actually want Cap to be the first to know. IDK why hahaha

And probably I’m overthinking stuff, but are they leading to S.W.O.R.D.? or Secret Warriors? It would be great if they decided to cancel the 2nd season to suddenly announce Agents of S.W.O.R.D. considering it will start around the time of Guardians of the Galaxy, and the way alien tech is used in the Winter Soldier’s mid-credit scene.

    • I’m pretty sure the clairvoyant was the good doctor Zola. They mentioned in the movie that his algorithm could read the future and he was tapped into everything shield did. So I’m not sure why this is still such a big mystery.

  12. I can’t take Patton Oswalt seriously. He’s one of us. A big ol’ nerd! Plus, he’s a comedian. I just don’t think I’ll be able to believe he’s an Agent of SHIELD. Still, I’m excited to see what happens next.

    Hail HYDRA!

    • Oswalt had a re-occurring role in Season 4 of Justified, and he did it well. It was a dramatic role, and he had moments of humor, but he wasn’t campy. He did a good job.

      • Yeap, Oswalt was great in Justified!

Although I sort of agree that I can’t picture him in SHIELD but I don’t know his character so I’ll have to wait and see.

  13. 2nd season….better writers.

    • Agreed.

  14. “Turn ,turn, turn”… that is the episode that changed the series. but is not the best episode. the best is T.R.A.C.K.S.

Also, what´s with the ill creature?

  15. join the make a dredd sequel campaign

  16. Agents of shield will succeed now because now they have freedom to do what ever with shield since that organization is over! People give the show another chance since its gotten better.

  17. Glenn Talbot?

Maybe this will be a lead-in to the Hulk TV show.

I still remember Bill Bixby hitchhiking on the road at the end of every episode as the sad piano music plays.

    #DontHailHydra

  18. My guess is that the Clairvoyant is MODOK or (more likely) Armin Zola. It makes sense! We only know he is a computer already and in the comics he has a body and can walk. So him wanting to know how Coulson is still alive makes sense because he is trying to get a body!.. Or MODOK lol but Armin Zola, to me, makes more sense.

  19. making vague references to heroes and past events is what really sunk this show into its
lowest ratings, then to top it off no meaty costumed vilians or 2nd tier heroes. the producers
were so wrong thinking they can throw the tbone without the meat in it and fans would just buy
    a complete heroeless action series.

  20. I called it on Hand not being “evil”. Just a misunderstanding. I liked this episode but I did think Ward coming out as evil came out of nowhere. Like the writers said shrug, “lets make him evil”. PS I find Triplet boring.

    • I’ll have to rewatch the season when it comes out on DVD/ becomes available on Netflix to see if maybe I missed some clues. The very nature of twists is that they often seem to come out of nowhere, until repeat viewings reveal the seeds were planted much earlier than you expected.

I have to disagree with you on Trip though. In his few appearances he showed more chemistry with Simmons than Ward ever showed with Skye. But to each his own, and I respect your opinion.

  21. Looks like Trip’s part will be expanded in the last leg of the season. Notice how in the promo art, the only characters portrayed outside of the original team are Trip and Raina. Fingers crossed he’ll join the team as a white hat and not another HYDRA sleeper. I kind of had my doubts that Garrett was the Clairvoyant, his demeanor was always reminiscent of that drunk uncle who tells embarrassing stories at birthday parties, which is perfect for a henchman, but lacking in the cold, calculated behaviour of someone in charge. Shame about Hand, while she was very much the obstructive bureaucrat in earlier appearances, in “Turn, turn, turn” she really shone and it’s a bit sad that Word of God confirmed she died (but then again, this is a comic book property so who knows?). Love that Ward has been confirmed asn an antagonist. The bad guys lacked an identifiable villain (Raina is just too polite and soft-spoken to count) and as I’ve said elsewhere, he wasn’t that interesting as a white hat. Let’s hope Brett Dalton takes this new direction and runs with it and makes Ward as memorable and enjoyable as Manu Bennett’s Deathstroke on Arrow. And yes, I realise that’s a pretty high bar.

  22. Dalton probably only found out about the HYRDA turn recently because it was just thought up. A lot of the story changes they have made feel like they did a soft reset during the mid-season to try and tie things in with Captain America to generate more interest.

  23. I just saw real SHIELD agents in action on CAp 2. I never and will not ever buy into these group of mistfits as SHIELD agent. None of these characters are credible including the lead Gregg. Never saw him in any bada– moments in the movies. Marvel/Disney could have easily done an entertaining espionage/spfy series. I.e. The Unit, Person of INterest, Hawaii Five O, Warehouse 13, Covert Affairs, Nikita(underrated amazing show). All very successful shows that are highly rated or critically acclaimed. Marvel decided to give us a comedy series and that fell flat. Im not trolling..Im just a realist. Plus, I am one of the millions who have stopped watching this show. I do have a life you know.

  24. How could the Avengers not know Coulson is alive if all the S.H.I.E.L.D. secrets were exposed in Winter Soldier?

    • Maybe they’ll deal with that at a later point in the show. Cap just basically told Black Widow to press the button. He didn’t exactly sift through all the data himself after it got revealed, he was more preoccupied with Bucky. What’s funnier though is that the fact #CoulsonLives is only supposed to be known to levels 7 and up, yet we see him walk past or directly interact with numerous nameless low-level SHIELD grunts over the course of the season.

      • Who’s to say the low-levels know what Coulson looks like? In many real-life big companies, the small staff doesn’t know the high execs, sometimes not even by name. Nothing odd here, really.

    • What happened to him at that mysterious bunker wasn’t in those records.

  25. i think thor already knew that coulson is alive, remember lady sif saw agent coulson, there’s no way she will not mention it to thor

    • Coulson asked her not to tell Thor and she agreed not to.

  26. If Hand is dead, she can be saved right? skye and coulson are living. Jemma is a brilliant biochemist, she has been studying skye blood and the GH325. So Hand could be saved right? There is hope, right?!?

  27. I really like that poster doe

  28. I like this show alot, and am hoping it comes out on DVD; I will buy the whole series. Someone mentioned Arrow…I like that one as well, and already have the series. Looks like I put my money where my mouth is. I also hope that Ward comes back to the “good guy” side, or that he is running his own operation to ferret out the baddies?! I am kinda bummed he appears at this juncture to be turning rogue and joining the Hydra-foils.

  29. Pasdar with a mustache! xD
