Marvel’s Agent Carter – airing on ABC during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s midseason break – premiered in early January to impressive buzz and decent ratings for the Marvel/ABC partnership. The show has had its faults, both in the conversation surrounding it as Marvel’s first female-led property and the show’s storyline. However, Agent Carter seemed to improve slightly in last week’s episode, which featured the Howling Commandos and a look at the origins of the Black Widow program.

One of the major throughlines of Agent Carter that was established in the show’s pilot has been the relationship between Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy). Recently, Atwell and D’Arcy explained how they worked together to bring the characters and their relationship to life.

In an interview with Marvel.com, the actors behind Peggy and Jarvis talked about making suggestions to bring more Britishness to their characters. However, Atwell added that “the dynamic between them is very, very clear on the page” and it was up to her and D’Arcy to make sure those characters were realized onscreen. As for how the two got along together on set, they agreed they worked well together.

Read D’Arcy and Atwell’s full quotes:

James D’Arcy: We definitely have really a good time, right? We have a really good time and maybe they kind of start to write to that. But actually it was kind of there right away in the first episode and the second episode.
Hayley Atwell: Well I remember, I started filming a few scenes and then James came in to do his first scene. It was the first scene, the phone call, and it was so clear to me that James had created a character that, yes, came from the script but he was doing so many interesting and funny things, and his comic timing was brilliant that he was just making it even better. And I think that within the relationship we’ve just been able to feed off each other in that way and have fun with it.

The efforts of Atwell and D’Arcy have come through within the first five episodes of Agent Carter, creating one of the more important relationships in the show. How that relationship will further develop in the series’ final run of episodes, though remains it to be seen as Peggy’s friendship with Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) will become more integral to the show.

Marvel has released the synopses for the final episodes of Agent Carter including the season finale. In “A Sin to Err,” “Snafu,” and “Valediction” Peggy will seemingly get closer to unraveling the mystery of Leviathan while the SSR ramps up their efforts to bring Howard to justice:

“A Sin to Err” – Peggy discovers the shocking truth about Leviathan but doesn’t realize that her true enemies are even closer than she imagined. Meanwhile, Souza is close to confirming the truth about Peggy and may just put her in the crosshairs of the SSR.

“Snafu” – Peggy is cornered and more vulnerable than ever as Leviathan makes their move against her. As the SSR zeroes in on Howard Stark, they may pay the ultimate price as they find their true enemy is closer than they realized.

“Valediction” – Peggy faces the full fury of Leviathan, as Howard Stark makes his return in the explosive season finale.

Viewers are certainly hoping to see Agent Carter wrap up the storylines established early on, such as the SSR accusing Howard of treason, as well as those they’ve developed with Leviathan. Additionally, Agent Carter has explored the character dynamics between Peggy, Jarvis, Howard, as well as Peggy’s fellow agents at the SSR.

Whether the last three episodes of Agent Carter will be able to provide a compelling payoff for viewers in terms of plot and character development remains to be seen. Likely, the next three episodes of Agent Carter will be what viewers have come to expect from the series – whether that’s good or not.

Agent Carter airs Tuesday @9pm on ABC.
