Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is gearing up for its midseason finale as Director Coulson and his team face off with the new iteration of Hydra, and Daisy Johnson forms a team of Inhumans – which we know to be the Secret Warriors. Set to take over ABC’s Tuesday timeslot while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on hiatus is the network’s other Marvel series, Agent Carter, which will debut its second season with a two-hour premiere in January.
In season 2, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is headed to Los Angeles with the Strategic Scientific Reserve, where she faces “a more sinister threat.” The trailer for Agent Carter’s second season teased another adventure for Peggy, while promos have focused on the original Marvel team, before S.H.I.E.L.D. existed or the Avengers teamed up. Now, the newest promo teases more action and gives us our first look at one of the new additions to Peggy’s team.
In the promo (above), Peggy is welcomed to Hollywood as “the next big thing,” greeted by Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy) and new SSR Chief, Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj). Like all the other promos for Agent Carter season 2, this one features a number of scenes of Peggy demonstrating her fighting skills and wielding a shotgun. However, this promo also gives us our first look at Jarvis’ wife, Ana, played by Lotte Verbeek (Outlander), who has some know how about the spy game since she offers Peggy a garter that doubles as a gun holster. Additionally shown in the promo is a longer clip of Jarvis showing Peggy around Howard Stark’s (Dominic Cooper) “leisure car,” the scene shown at New York Comic-Con earlier this year.
Season 2 will feature a number of new characters, including the Marvel Comics villain Whitney Frost a.k.a. Madame Masque (Wynn Everett). Other new characters debuting in season 2 are Frost’s husband Calvin Chadwick (Currie Graham), scientist Jason Wilkes (Reggie Austin), War Department veteran Vernon Masters (Kurtwood Smith) and mob boss Joseph Manfredi (Ken Marino). Other cast members from season 1 set to return for Agent Carter’s sophomore outing include Bridget Regan as Black Widow sleeper agent Dottie Underwood and Chad Michael Murray as Jack Thompson.
However, when Murray recently spoke with TV Guide, he revealed that Thompson will be more than an agent in season 2, since he’s been promoted to the head of SSR in New York:
“He’s got to take the reins and become the man he’s ultimately going to be. He’s got control over what Carter’s going to do, where she’s going to be. He’s in charge of Sousa. He’s in charge of the SSR.”
From his comments, it seems Thompson may not appear as much in season 2 as he did last year, since he’ll be in New York while the rest of the cast is in Hollywood. However, Murray did say viewers would be able to “get to peek behind some curtains and see a bit more” of Thompson. As for other season 1 characters we’ll likely see less, Angie Martinelli (Lyndsy Fonseca) acted as both Peggy’s friend and someone that helped the SSR agent acclimate to New York City. But it seems Ana will be taking on that role for Peggy in Los Angeles, befriending the agent and helping her with her mission on the west coast.
Other than Ana, though, the new Agent Carter cast members largely haven’t been featured in the promos for season 2, aside from an appearance of Wilkes where he didn’t have any lines. Of course, many viewers returning for Agent Carter season 2 are likely more excited to see the return of Peggy, and other fan-favorite characters like Jarvis and Sousa – they’re the original Marvel team, after all. But, with so many new faces joining Agent Carter in Hollywood, especially such a well-known comic villain like Madame Masque, surely certain viewers are eager to get a first glimpse of the sinister threat Peggy will be facing while she’s on the west coast. That being said, though, even if Madame Masque or the other new characters don’t appear in any other promos, there’s only a few weeks left until Agent Carter season 2 premieres on ABC.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues Tuesday with ‘Closure’ at 9pm on ABC. Agent Carter Season 2 premieres Tuesday, January 5th at 9pm on ABC.
