Question: What do you get when you mix a creepy Liam Neeson, a scantily clad Christina Ricci, a giant butcher's knife, and a whole bunch of moody music? Answer: The first official trailer for Anchor Bay's upcoming horror/suspense film After.Life.
Because it's been a while since we've covered After.Life here at Screen Rant (this trailer actually premiered a couple of weeks ago, but somehow slipped under our radar), here's a brief synopsis of the movie:
After a horrific car accident, Anna (Christina Ricci) wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson) preparing her body for her funeral. Confused, terrified and feeling still very much alive, Anna doesn‘t believe she‘s dead, despite the funeral director‘s reassurances that she is merely in transition to the afterlife. Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna‘s grief-stricken boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) still can‘t shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn‘t what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late; Anna may have already begun to cross over the other side.
In my opinion, the description of the film does a better job at selling the story than the trailer does, but I'll leave that for you to decide for yourself. Check out the trailer (courtesy of TrailerAddict) below.
While there is enough interesting material in the story to pique my interest, I think that overall, the trailer is pretty sloppy. It looks to be a sort of paranormal thriller, but most of the footage is of Ricci running around with a butcher's knife, which falls into the traditional slasher category of horror. Also, I like Justin Long, but the first thing I thought when I saw him was, "Didn't he already play the role of the skeptical boyfriend in Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell?" To be fair, in this film he's skeptical because he thinks his girlfriend isn't dead, whereas in Drag Me To Hell he was skeptical because he thought she wasn't going to die.
But I digress...
Because the film's premise is somewhat intriguing, and also because I'm up for pretty much anything with Liam Neeson these days, I'll probably end up seeing this film. At the very least, it will give me a chance to get a better feel for the movie's director, Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, who has racked up some impressive honors in the independent film world and was named one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" by Filmmaker Magazine.

Finally, here are some fun facts about the film: After.Life completed filming all the way back in 2008, and actually premiered last year at the AFI Film Festival. Originally, the movie had Alfred Molina and Kate Bosworth attached to star.
