‘After Earth’ Trailer: Will & Jaden Smith Are Stranded in the Savage Land

With After Earth, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan tries to continue his bounce back from the disappoint of his last few films, such as Lady in the WaterThe Happening and The Last Airbender. Shyamalan made a positive step forward with Devil, which saw him break from his pattern of total creative control by handing a story from his “Night Chronicles” to a different writer and director, resulting in a fairly well-received film.

However, After Earth sees Shyamalan back at the helm and taking on the sort of high-profile blockbuster material he tackled with Airbender (to disastrous results). Of course, Earth is already getting a boost from the family-brand star power of Will and Jaden Smith – not to mention, the intrigue of seeing the Smiths (and Shyamalan) working in the sci-fi genre.

Right off the bat, this After Earth teaser presents a picture of the future that is somewhat similar to the trailer for Oblivion, the new sci-fi film from Tom Cruise and TRON Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. The mix of natural and technological elements and color palettes is immediately noticeable in both films, yet equally enticing to the eye in either case. Shyamalan’s film will also likely draw comparisons to the distant future segment of Cloud Atlas, what with the similarities in costume and tech design and the sort of dialect spoken by the characters (Will Smith’s futuristic southern drawl compared to Halle Berry’s future-street-slang delivery in Cloud Atlas).

The Future Earth of ‘Cloud Atlas’

After Earth manages stand out from other recent future-Earth sci-fi films in the sense of wonder that is being offered. This trailer almost paints the film as a sci-fi version of the The Roadwith a father teaching his son core values about what kind of man to become, against the backdrop of a harsh, threatening environment. There is a question (judging from the footage) of how much screen time Will actually has in the film; it seems like this will be Jaden’s show to carry, and that the rest of the cast will appear either in flashback or through other extraneous methods (video chats, etc.).

The young Smith proved in The Karate Kid (love or hate that remake and its upcoming sequel) that he definitely has his dad’s star potential. This film, however, will test that potential on a much more mature and challenging level than physicality and/or minor dramatic emoting. Can we watch this kid onscreen for hours and still be intrigued and/or moved by him? Perhaps.

For Shyamalan’s part: so far it seems that he has a mind and eye for sci-fi, and has constructed some pretty great sequences in this film. The opening shot of Will’s character, “Cypher Raige,” getting sucked away as the hull blew definitely got a jolt out of me, and the vision of Earth – and all those aforementioned threats waiting there – definitely have me intrigued to see more.

After Earth will be in theaters on June 7, 2013.

  1. damn… this looks awesome! visually stunning and i cant wait to see more of the evolved animals.

  2. SCI-FI AIN’T GOIN NOWHERE.

    • Hear hear! The genre has lost all meaning. They might as well call it sci-action.

  3. The whole voice over schtick didn’t work for the trailer. It looks aesthetically pleasing though. Let’s hope Jayden smith doesn’t ruin this with his acting.

    • What movie has he ruined before? The pursuit of happiness was good, and the Karate kid was surprisingly good to all, who at first thought it was horrible idea to remake.

    • There is a point to it……..The Fear message that he is giving his son has something to do with a species that senses fear. They killed off the remaining Humans and now inhabit the earth.

      I went to the website

  4. “I Am Legend 2″

  5. I am hopelessly optimistic for this one I am intrigued but also turned off by the fact that M. Knight Shyamalan is directing but you never know he could turn his string of awful movies around with this one

  6. I must admit I feel like Will Smith has been on a down fall. His finest performance has been in The Pursuit of Happyness. Too bad cause he was so great in that.

  7. Looks great! Big Will Smith fan so hopefully he has a decent amount of screentime. Though it will be interesting to see if Jaden can carry the film all by himself. He did to an extent with the Karate Kid. But he had many other actors surrounding him whereas with After Earth, he only has Will to back him up.

  8. OMG!!! This is AMAZING!!!

  9. I’m a smith fan myself but i didn’t find his accent very convincing. Maybe I just need to get used to it a bit. Other than that, the movie seems like a visual spectacle. I’ll be checking it out.

    • @ Johnny
I have to agree. I watched the trailer on 2 different formats because I thought there was something wrong with the audio then I realized he was purposely talking that way…
But I realize that’s only a small issue and I’m sure that after 5 minutes I won’t notice it at all…

  10. I’m actually quite pleased that this seems to be the first movie that Wil Smith is in where he doesn’t sound like Wil Smith. Color me intrigued.

    • uh did you forget about ALI?

  11. Hmm this may have pissed all over dawn of the planet of the apes strawberries, evolved animals on a human free planet earth?

Looks good tho, next year definitely belongs to scifi! Star Trek, Pacific Rim, Cloud Atlas and Oblivion!!

  12. M. Night Shyamalan is on life support. If this flick doesn’t do well at the box office I don’t see how he’ll get any more chances to save his own career.

  13. Hmmm… I was saying ‘Boo-urns’…

  14. This trailer looks really good. But The Last Airbender looked really good too. Then I watched the movie.

  15. I’m actually at the point where I’m rooting for Shyamalan…
Seriously, The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable showed some serious talent so he can’t be a total hack right?

    • 3 of my favourite’s as well.

  16. Looks good so far. I am hoping MNS can make this turnaround. I loved 6th Sense through The Village.

  17. this trailer really does look good

also this trailer make me feel that a Black Panther movie should be made like this. some elements in the trailer scream Marvel Black Panther

  18. This looks awesome! Can’t wait!

  19. Nice… all these sci-fi Earth apoc movies coming out… everyone must be working off the Mayan calendar.

You can just connect all these movies:

World War Z -> Warm Bodies -> Oblivion -> After Earth

  20. I Am Legend + Predators + Avatar = After Earth.

  21. I’m optimistic! Shyamalan is definitely capable of directing an amazing movie so… hopefully he does this time.

  22. Now this is the type of Will Smith popcorn fodder we’ve come to know & love!!! Will it be some award winning film we’ll be talking about for years, but it looks like it’ll be a very enjoyable 2hrs at the theater…possibly worthy of repeat viewings. I’m excited.

  23. I love flicks like this. Post apocalyptic, but not ugly & drab like Mad Max or Book of Eli (though I love those too.) I’m pretty excited for this & Oblivion. I believe M Night is an amazing director, but a terrible writer, so my hopes are high.
I HAAAAATED The Karate Kid remake, but that wasn’t Jayden’s fault.

  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aanhrAnGqPY&list=FLTEmT2BT6q8PVHLVOZnqxuA&index=1

is it just me, or does will smiths accent sound SLIGHTLY different in the above link?

    • Yeah man, this is Will Smith’s voice, the video embedded here sounds like a voice-over or something weird.

  25. Sharktopus was still better.

  26. Looks terrible to me. To be fair though, these kinds of films are not my cup of tea to begin with.

  27. I’m intrigued.

I love the Smith’s, Shyamalan, and Sci-fi, and this looks to be FANTASTIC regardless of who the director is.

It looks like people are going to hate any project Shyamalan attaches himself to. Me? I don’t really care what people think.

  28. It looks great but the name M. Night Shyamalan kills every expectation I have for this. I see a great trailer, but I’m expecting one of the baboons to just stand up, look at the Smiths, and say: “It’s okay you may stay.” Then fade to black.

    • I think you got this mixed up with the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel… hehe.

  29. watta twist…
