‘After Earth’ Set Photos: Jaden Smith’s Space Suit & Abandoned Planet

2 years ago by

M. Night Shyamalan’s name has become something in the way of a punchline for many movie fans, but his new sci-fi project (titled After Earth) has been generating some genuinely positive buzz, thanks to the Oscar-winning screenwriting talent and noteworthy cast members who’re joining forces with the divisive filmmaker.

A new image of star Jaden Smith – wearing what could be described as a futuristic space suit – from the After Earth set has surface online. Additionally, we’ve rounded up a handful of older photos from the project’s shoot down in Costa Rica, offering an early look at the film’s “abandoned” version of Earth.

After Earth takes place in the far future and centers around a father and son duo (Will and Jaden Smith) who crash-land on our home planet – which, at that point, has been abandoned by humanity for centuries. The son has a chance to prove his own worth when he ventures out and explores the mysterious and “sometimes scary” world, in the hopes of finding help for his injured father.

Check out pics of the younger Mr. Smith and his A-list father – who’s been made to look much older here than he does in the upcoming Men in Black III – along with additional images of Shyamalan and his production team working around the Costa Rican landscape:

Shyamalan recently revealed on his Twitter account that he’s shooting After Earth in the high-resolution digital format (via Sony’s F65 camera) and that the film won’t be conceived in 3D as that “creates an expectation” in terms of scale – whereas “the style of ['After Earth'] is quiet and eerie,” taking its cues from previous film works such as Kar Wai Wong’s In the Mood for Love, in terms of atmosphere and lyrical visual style.

That all looks and sounds intriguing enough. Plus, truth be told, it would be nice to see Shyamalan’s newfound willingness to actually collaborate with others on the screenplays for his movies pay off – with After Earth being a return-to-form for the auteur, especially in the aftermath of universally-despised releases such as The Last Airbender and The Happening.

Here’s hoping for the best when After Earth arrives in theaters around the U.S. on June 7th, 2013.

  1. That devastated Earth looks pretty good to me. And Jaden is looking more and more like his father.

    • Yeah, all that devastation and the hot-tubs and pools are still functioning perfectly. You don’t even have to scoop leaves off of the surface of the water!

    • Ah, I was mistaken then. I thought those were shots of them just hanging out at like a private jungle resort.

      • Maybe I should have added a ;) after my comment. To avoid confusion.

  2. Costa Rica is equivalent to a devastated earth? LOL.

Seriously though, am I missing screen shots or are these just shots of Costa Rica?

    • Ha, well, remember folks, this is supposed to be Earth almost a millennium after humans abandoned it. Suffice it to say, it’s had a good deal of time to recover from being “devastated.”

      • Haha. Fair enough.

    • @ResidentOod: Ahh good it’s not just me then, I thought exactly the same.”Am I missing some pictures here?”

Looks like I’m not, they look normal to me.

  3. Wow, jaden sure shot up since The Karate Kid!

  4. Man, I’m so getting tired of watching Jaden Smith. His face always has that ‘bored’ look, almost like he’s gonna cry, which is getting irritating after every movie. Let’s hope he grows up to not have the same look in his later years :P
But on topic, I don’t really have any hope of Shyamlan doing something good again. But then, I might be proven wrong.

  5. I HOPE THIS TIES INTO SIGNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not really… been looking forward to this for a while and so far looks pretty interesting. Tom Cruise is doing a few Sci-Fi’s too…

  6. In the picture where will smith is looking at the screen he has like these two things on his arm. They look like fingers but they look like their coming/sticking OUT of his elbow… its sort of creeping me out. Hopefully I’m not the only one seeing this…

    • haha i think its a twig in the foreground

    • There is a man standing beside him (you can see the man’s hat)

  7. No way am I watching this. Shyamalan is a hack and the addition of the Smiths makes me shiver. Only if this gets incredible reviews and word of mouth will I consider it. I’ve learned not to waste my money on that overrated trio.

    • They’ve done more good than bad, except jaden lol.

      • Shyamalan only has The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable and, to a lesser extent, Signs. It’s just amazing how every single movie he does is worse than the previous one.
And Will Smith is an enigma. He doesn’t even make great movies. Not one has been amazing. He’s just very intelligent in picking good guy roles all the time because he wants to be “likeable.” I don’t swallow it.
This concept is pretty cool, though. A good chance for Shyamalan to redeem himself… but he won’t.

  8. It’s been fun reading Shyamalan’s tweets during pre-production, and now, production. They’ve only been shooting for like six days now, and they’ve had of and on weather, plus some interference from Costa Rican critters. Some of the poisonous variety.

  9. Jadens costume looks good, nice designs and shapes in it. I’m intrigued by the story. I’m hoping Shyamalan can pull this together. I loved six sense, unbreakable, and signs. The village was interesting, but wish he had just kept to the spooky goblins in the forest premise.

It’s a shame all the bashing he’s gotten I think there’s a decent artist/film maker lurking inside of him he just has to do his thing. Lets hope he Bring back that magic he had in his early films.

  10. Heres the TOP NEWS about this Daddy buys another movie for his kid to be in.

  11. I sure hope M. Night hits this one out of the park. He’s due for a hit.

  12. I really don’t know what to think of this. I guess it’s a good thing that M. Night has decided to work with a script that is not his own but there is enough to still be weary about.
The Village will always be the weirdest cinema experiences I ever had. The slow grumble that started about half way through as people started to guess the ending was something I’ve never experienced before and haven’t since. And then when it ended people were booing and cursing at the screen. I know that’s not a unique experience for some people but in the small Connecticut town I’m from that never happens.

  13. That’s actually a neat suit and a good photo. Lets just hope his acting has improved some.

  14. It looks good and the story is very interesting. Hope this movie will redeem his reputation because after 3 movies in a row from Lady in the Water, then The Happening and the Last Airbender. He really was a joke of the town. But we all know how good of a director he is. Remember Six Sense? The Sign? Unbreakable? and The Village? those movies were really good and hope this new movie After Earth is also good.

  15. Super…….
