Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have just had their original Boston drama series City on a Hill ordered by Showtime. Based on an idea co-created by Affleck and Chuck MacLean, the new show will center around the the real life events surrounding what has become known as the "Boston Miracle." Set in the early 1990s, the fictional account will follow the plight of a Brooklyn-born African American district attorney and a hardened FBI veteran who come together to take on a family of armored car robbers in a city ruled by corruption and racism.

Serving to call upon the very same Boston pride that fueled their Oscar winning theatrical effort Good Will Hunting in 1997, City on a Hill will take Affleck and Damon back to their New England roots. Pitched as a gritty thriller, the new show was sure to attract the attention of one major network or another -- and the latest word has Showtime taking the bait.

According to an official release, Showtime has ordered City on a Hill to series, with Affleck and Damon both attached behind the scenes. The pilot episode will be directed by Gavin O'Connor (The Accountant) - who will additionally serve as executive producer alongside James Mangold (Logan), Jennifer Todd (Memento), Affleck, and Damon. Speaking to the inherent promise that stand behind the new show, O'Connor stated:

Ben Affleck in The Accountant

"Chuck wrote a pressure-cooker of a script steeped in the tribal codes of a Shakespeare play - family, blood, betrayal, honor. His take on the ties that bind is handled with a deep honesty and insight. I see the show as a brawling thriller - and an intimate family drama - played out on the rough streets of Boston."

Following their work together on The Accountant, it's readily apparent that Affleck and O'Connor know how to concoct a "brawling thriller" with the legs to knock viewers out of their seats. Furthermore, bringing Damon on board should only serve to heighten the stakes of what could very well be a thrilling new drama series on Showtime.

Only time will tell whether or not things will shape up favorably for all parties involved, but with any luck City on a Hill will prove to be an enjoyable new program that Showtime subscribers can begin to look forward to, so here's to hoping for the very best from O'Connor, Affleck, Damon, and company.
