If you’ve been keeping up with us on the site and on Twitter then you know that a faction of the Screen Rant editorial staff is currently covering the New York Comic-Con, conducting interviews with actors and filmmakers from some of the most anticipated upcoming movie releases.
As always, we try to look out for our loyal readers by snagging answers to looming questions and rumors around the Net regarding certain comic book movie characters and franchises. Yesterday I talked to Avatar star Stephen Lang about playing X-Men’s Cable; right after that interview, I had a chance to sit down with Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody to chat a little about Marvel’s Ant-Man.
Brody was NYCC to promote the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of Predators, but that didn’t stop us from chatting about everything from a Predators sequel (more on that soon), the Waco movie, and of course, the longstanding Brody/Ant-Man rumors. Last we heard back in summer, Brody’s reps were pursuing the Ant-Man role, but had not yet heard back about it. When I asked Brody himself what was up with Ant-Man, his answer was a little perplexing to say the least:
“I haven’t been involved in any of those discussions – I have mentioned it to my reps who have been kind of covert about their response as well, which is very strange to me. I said ‘Is there any validity to this, what is this?’ and they said ‘Well…it’s too early to say.’ It was very strange and I kind of dropped it at that…Not everything that is bandied around the Internet is factual, but sometimes there are elements that do stem from truth that people who are in the middle of it aren’t aware of either. We’ll see.”
I prodded a bit further, asking him about whether he has any sort of relationship with Ant-Man screenwriter Edgar Wright (he doesn’t), as well as making the assertion that he, Brody, at least sounds interested in the character, to which he responded:
“I’m enthusiastic about it. The key is to constantly push the boundaries and to find things that allow me to be creative and do things that, you know, I enjoy and grow from.”
Brody went on to talk about how the same people who may doubt him for Ant-Man are the same people who doubted him as a leading man in an action flick like Predators. He made it clear that he is not looking to be trapped in any kind of acting box, and is open to all the variety of experience acting offers – including something like Ant-Man. When I asked what he, an acclaimed actor, would bring to the Ant-Man character (should he get the part), Brody responded:
“If it progresses, I’ll guarantee I’ll fill you in.”
Marvel has gained a bit of a bad reputation for taking too long to pursue choice actors for key roles in their movie universe (see: the Captain America casting saga), and while the shape of this Ant-Man project is still largely unknown, having an Oscar-winner playing the part can’t be all bad, right?
I’ll let you guys debate that in the comment section below. Stay tuned for more of the great news and info we have to report from the New York Comic-Con.
