The Adjustment Bureau Review The Adjustment Bureau Spoilers Discussion

While our readers are already discussing director George Nolfi’s sci-fi love story in the comments section of The Adjustment Bureau review, this is the place where you can discuss spoilers about the movie without worrying about ruining it for people who haven’t seen it yet.

If you’re posting comments here, assume that anyone in the conversation has seen the movie – if you haven’t seen the movie, I would recommend you don’t read these comments here until you have.

  1. Ijust watch it and i think the chairman was that bartender in the bar where mitchell and norris met twice. She’s the one that tells norris to meet mitchell during the rain, when he starts explaining everything and put things in motion to realease norris from his pre-planned path.
and also she’s a slightly irrellevant charachter that nobody would think of, just like mitchell said, yu might have met her but did’t noticed it

    • Its not the bartender, she was given a note by Mitchell that was her only role, she didnt say anything to him at all cept your friend said you would be here, and if She was the chairmen and directed him to the warehouse, Mitchell wouldn’t have known Noris would be there due to the rain. Mitchell knew Noris would be at that bar and it wasnt raining when he was at the bar ense why he didnt have an umbrella. As the bartender states before she hands him the note your friend said you would be here. The only logical person to be the chairmen would be reception at the dance studio.

    • I mean whose to say that the chairman isn’t both of them or anyone all at the same time since it’s implied that the chairman is God and in most religions He is omnipresent and omnipotent.

  2. Near the end when matt damon was about to go into the court house some random lady said “she’s not in there” but how does she know who matt damon is looking for?

That chick was the chairman. I’ve looked around and no one has said anything abut that

    • I think your right and that was elises friend who went to go look for her

  3. Actually that random women isn’t random that’s clerk from cedar lake ballet and friend of Elise That means she knew what she was talking about, and that makes me go with the bartender totally random character in the movie appears in the important moments in the movie.

  4. i don’t think it was the barwoman, i think its the woman who is at the reception when Norris first sees alise dancing.

  5. The chairman was the woman in reception at the dance studio when David saw Elise dance. She is also responsible for blowing the hat off the adjustment member chasing David in order for him to gain more time to see Elise dance. She also shows up in the hospital to wheel Elise out in a wheel chair. She also is present in the stairs in the courthouse to help David find her. In every instance she is helping Elise. She is in actuality making her own adjustments to the plan unbeknowest to the bureau members

  6. I understood Harry to say that the chairman appears to everyone as someone different–my guess is that whoever helps guide you in shaping your life is acting as the chairman for you. Maybe Elise’s friend represents the chairman for her and David’s friend and campaign manager (Trainor?) represents the chairman for him. It would be interesting to know who Harry saw in the chairman’s office. Maybe David’s father, or maybe the chairman took the form of David himself for Harry. And maybe Harry, without even knowing it, also represented the chairman to David and Elise.

    • Based on two facts, the chairman is the bartender. Firstly, there are two instances at critical points where the bartender comes into play. At revelation and at renewal.

Secondly, the actress who plays the bartender is an actress in her own right, Jennifer Ehle, and the director and producers both say there was footage with the “chairwoman” that the cut. It’s not uncommon for even major film stars to have much of the scenes cut if they are in supporting roles.

      The Bartender’s it.

  7. The actor who played David’s friend Trainor said in an interview that the actress who played the Chairman has a “beautiful voice.” Emily Blunt is a trained singer, which suggests the possibility that Elise herself is the Chairman.

  8. The original ending (as read in the script above) is what I saw at the movie theater. The DVD I have has the ending everyone is talking about. I was surprised they changed the ending. I thought Morgan Freeman made perfect sense as the “Chairman.” Didn’t anyone else see that ending?
