Conrad Vernon is set to direct MGM's animated feature version of The Addams FamilyThe Addams Family began as a popular comic strip that was featured in the New Yorker and illustrated by cartoonist Charles Addams. Their success led to The Addams Family television show that ran between 1964 and 1966 and an animated series in the early 1970s. The series also experienced a revival with a few movies in the 1990s that starred Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia and Christina Ricci - plus The Addams Family broadway musical debuted in 2009.

The Addams Family series is known for giving the ideal American family a morbid and satirical spin. The upcoming movie features the usual Addams Family characters, including the patriarch and matriarch of the family, Gomez and Morticia, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, and Grandmama. Additional members of this atypical family include their butler Lurch, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt and Thing.

THR is reporting that Conrad Vernon (Sausage Party) has been tapped to direct The Addams Family animated movie, as well as serve as producer alongside Gail Berman and Alex Schwartz. Pamela Pettler, known for Corpse Bride and Monster House, wrote the screenplay based on cartoons that were revised by Matt Lieberman. The development of the movie was announced in 2013. However, rumors about the film began in 2010 when headlines suggested Tim Burton was creating a 3D stop motion movie featuring the morbid family.

Addams Family reads

Tim Burton did seem like a perfect fit for the animated film. His work on quirky fantasy films, like Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride undoubtedly solidifies his prowess within the genre - and his history of working in stop motion made the medium an obvious choice had he taken on The Addams Family project. Many were excited to see Burton's take on The Addams Family and a change from the usual computer animation used in today's films. Unfortunately, Burton pulled out and development on the 3D stop animation was stalled before being picked up, in a more traditional sense, by MGM in 2013.

Vernon appears to be a good choice for the film as well, considering his experience as an animation veteran who co-directed films like Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar: Europe's Most Wanted. His latest film, Sausage Party, was a surprise R-rated hit that grossed more than $140 million worldwide.

We do not know how far along development is at this point on The Addams Family, but we'll keep you posted if anything changes.
