Adam Sandler to Headline and Co-Write ‘Candy Land’ Movie

When last we heard about Hasbro’s Candy Land board game movie adaptation, it was being scripted by Kung Fu Panda duo Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. The pair revealed they were fashioning the movie as an all-ages-friendly mix of action and comedy that would unfold like a Lord of the Rings-style fantasy adventure, set in a world filled with peppermint forests and fudge swamps.

However, there’s no longer any point in debating whether or not that sounds like a good idea – seeing how the “fantasy adventure” aspect of the Candy Land adaptation is being abandoned, in favor of a film that’s bigger on laughs… as co-written by and starring none other than the top dog of high-concept comedy shlock, Adam Sandler.

Columbia Pictures, Hasbro, and Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions have announced that they are prepped to collaborate on the live-action Candy Land movie, which is still set to be directed by Kevin Lima (Enchanted). Besides being attached as the lead, Sandler will also be collaborating with Robert Smigel (You Don’t Mess with the Zohan) on the film’s screenplay.

This marks but the latest drastic change in direction for the Candy Land adaptation. Back in 2009, the project was originally going to be about people entering an enchanted board game (a la Jumanji), as scripted by Men in Black III writer Etan Cohen. Aibel and Berger were thereafter hired on to pen the screenplay; the two basically dropped Cohen’s narrative design completely, in favor of the aforementioned LotR approach instead.

Now, as it stands, Candy Land will most likely be a conventional family-friendly comedy in the vein of the Sandler-starring Bedtime Stories – one that partly takes place in reality, while also crossing over occasionally into the titular world of sugary landmarks and residents (be it real or imagined).

Adam Sandler in ‘Bedtime Stories’

Regardless of whether you’re still a dyed-in-the-wool Sandler comedy fan – or if you feel that his starring efforts have gotten increasingly lazy, crass, and unfunny over the years – there IS still some personnel involved with this project who are more universally-admired, and thus provide hope that could amount to more than a Sandler-style “joint” for general audiences.

Lima, for example, is well-liked for directing films such as Enchanted, Disney’s animated Tarzan flick, and even A Goofy Movie – which has (surprisingly) earned something in the way of a cult following, over the years. On the other hand, Lima was also responsible for helming 102 Dalmatians, so it can’t be said that his directing efforts always result in passable-to-good family entertainment.

One thing you can count on, though – now that the money-raking body that is Happy Madison Productions is involved with the Candy Land movie, the project is unlikely to undergo any additional metamorphoses in the future. For better or for (much) worse, a Sandler-centric version is the one most likely to actually be made.

  1. If Donny’s Boy goes good then ill think about it

  2. I wondered how Adam Sandler could ever top the lack of success of “Jack and Jill.” Now, I know.

  3. He would.

  4. Is it wrong that i’m wishing death upon him?

  5. Adam Sandler is a threat that should be removed from the world.

    • Go watch spanglish, reign over me, and Punch Drunk Love. then come back to me.

      • Yea those were such awesome movies that totally outweigh the damage that’s been done with Jack & Jill, Just Go With It, Grown Ups, Zookeeper, Funny People, Bedtime Stories, Deuce Bigalow: Europea Jigalow, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Click, The Longest Yard, Little Nicky, and all Happy Madison Production films that didn’t feature him (Bucky Larson, Benchwarmers, etc.) :)

        • That’s a comprehensive list of pure terror. And thanks, you completely made my point for me. :)

        • Every movie you just listed; I OWN on DVD and watch frequently and laugh harder with each viewing.

        • What’s with all the Sandler hate? sure his best movie’s were in the late 90′s Happy Gilmore & The Waterboy but he also had some good one’s after the turn of the century. It’s just recently he’s been making more family comedies for you to try to relate to.But i agree after the Zohan & Little Nicky film’s he should’ve got 30 blows to his n**ts separtly. But come on what would the comedy world be like without Adam Sandler.Who else do we have Ben Stiller?

          • “…what would the comedy world be without Adam Sandler? Who else do we have Ben Stiller?”

YES! Ben Stiller isn’t a CHIMP. Jim Carrey, Seth Rogen, Zach Galiafanakis , Ed Helms. Even Jack Black or Betty White.

Sandler gives people with downs syndrome a bad name.

            • Man sandler must’ve screwed you over in another lifetime or something. He has his good movies along with the bad ones like everyone else you mentioned, matter of fact half of those people aren’t even good enough to carry a film on it’s own.Rogen is overrated,Zach & Jack are supporting actors & when was the last time Stiller and Carrey made a classic comedy?

              • When you headline and co-write a movie like Candyland you give up all right to be treated like a normal human. Candyland is the kind of movie you make because either your the greatest director in the world and want to prove it by taking the most impossible idea and make it into a movie or you hate yourself, your career and you want everbody on the planet to hate it with the same passion you do.

The idea of a Candyland movie is an insult to the movie industry, everyone involved must hate themself for just allowing such a movie to exist. Allowing such a movie to be put along ANY other movie is an insult to that movie even such tripe as Super Mario Bros The Movie, The Happening or anything by Ewe Boll.

      • I’ll give you Punch Drunk Love. But the others, not so much.

  6. As if the Candy Land movie wasn’t going to be bad enough all by itself, Adam Sandler is now involved?

  7. Flop alert!!

  8. This is the worst idea I’ve ever heard.

  9. Whats next? “SORRY!” the board game adaptation directed by Mel Gibson?

      that should be a meme.

  10. Well at least he’s not making Happy Gilmore 2 and ruining a classic movie (a’la Caddyshack 2).

  11. Sandler must have the largest collection of incriminating photos and videos in Hollywood……..

    • Well, he should just do us the favor and release them for our enjoyment rather than make a bunch of movies that are not entertaining at all…

  12. Adam Sandler is living proof that the human species did in fact evolve from the ape. The conundrum is that he’s still stuck in the “ape stage.”
The fact that there’s actually a segment of society that finds him entertainment is highly disturbing.
Sandler is to comedy what Sarah Palin is to American politics.

  13. I can’t stand Adam Sandler anymore. What was the last good film he did? For me it was probably Mr. Deeds or Big daddy. He is terrible!!!

  14. Even though this is a strange theme, I was looking forward to the “epic” cinematography of landscape (as well as the CGI, i.e. new Alice in Wonderland)…nooooooooowwwww, it sounds like it is going to be a cheaply made family money-grab. shame….huge shame

  15. Yeah this is going to suck big time. Was really hoping for a twisted candyland movie but that is out the window now. Hey look guys, Hasbro peed their pants….

  16. It’s a shame Sandler was unavailable for Inglourious Basterds. He should’ve stuck with it – maybe his career would be better. Tarantino has that magic effect on actors.

    • absolutely not….. there is no part were he could even compare to brad pitt or whoeever he was planning to play.

  17. Well, he was approached to play Donny Donowitz. I think he would’ve been decent in the part. I didn’t mind Eli Roth, but I would’ve been interested to see how Sandler would’ve handled it.

  18. I’m still waiting for the Happy-Madison Gilligan’s Island movie they announced 12 years ago

  19. please stop making movies. Grandma’s Boy was the last thing that was funny from Happy-Madison and that was like 3-4 years ago.

  20. Candy Land movie? We already have a Candy Land movie! It’s called Wreck It Ralph.

  21. I am a huge fan of candy land board game growing up. I had played it before since I was little girl. It’s my favorite all time board game, I would love to see an live action movie of candy land. I will be so excited but can’t wait. I hope hungry hungry Hippos would become an live action, I grew up with that board game too. If they make one for sure. Even there was a Battleship movie with Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna in it.
