Actors live in a weird type of reality that mimics high school, with them being the absolute most popular kids around town. Actors are the upper crust of the entertainment world, so of course actors are always getting together with each other, as well as breaking up with one another.
Being the cool kids around Hollywood, actors tend to date other actors. This means that some actors have dated before they’ve actually become famous. Yes, they might have had a few credits to their name, but there are plenty of actors who have dated each other before they became the truly famous stars we know them to be today.
Before an actor becomes famous, they may date other actors who are already famous. For couples that include only one star at the time of the relationship, the unknown actor can kind of be ignored by the public. That is until that actor becomes famous also, which makes looking back on these types of relationships particularly humorous.
Plenty of actors have dated each other before one of them became truly famous, while some have even dated before either of them reached stardom.
Here are the 15 Actors You Never Knew Dated Before They Were Famous.
15. Christian Bale and Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore is Hollywood royalty. She essentially has been famous for most of her life having starred in her first film while still a toddler. Christian Bale, on the other hand, had a different upbringing, though he found fame at a young age too.
While Barrymore was a well-known face after her success in E.T., as well as all the drama she went through as a teen, Bale had to make his way from the United Kingdom before he could find fame.
Steven Spielberg had cast Bale in Empire of the Sun when Bale was thirteen years old. Many speculate if Spielberg was the one who set up the date for Bale and Barrymore. However, things didn’t go so great.
Bale says that the two went to see a horror movie and that Barrymore never called him ever again. Things worked out though.
Bale went on to starring as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s films, while Barrymore continued acting and even started her own production company.
14. Chris Evans and Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel had hit her stride with 7th Heaven. As the most successful actor on the show, Biel has starred in movies such as The Illusionist and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. She is also getting great reviews about her performance on the television show The Sinner.
In 2001, when Biel was in her prime on 7th Heaven, she started dating Chris Evans. You now know Evans as Captain America himself, but back then, his career was just getting started.
Evans only had a few acting credits when he started dating Biel. He then was cast in Not Another Teen Movie and his career started heading in the right direction.
The couple ended up staying together for five years. They ended their relationship in 2006, but never came out and said as to why they were ending their long-term relationship.
13. Melissa Joan Hart and Ryan Reynolds
Melissa Joan Hart has been around for awhile. She was the star of both Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. The actress is all grown up now, though, and is more recently known for her television show Melissa and Joey.
Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, didn’t have as easy of a start in Hollywood. The actor who is most well-know for Deadpool wasn’t originally the most successful. Though you might not have realized he was a successful child star, Reynolds actually began acting in 1991.
While Hart portrayed Sabrina on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch television series, she also portrayed Sabrina in the 1996 television movie that went by the same name. Reynolds was in that movie too. He portrayed Sabrina’s crush.
The movie was filmed in Canada, Reynolds’ homeland. Hart had left her boyfriend behind to film the movie, and then proceeded to cheat on him with Reynolds.
“I didn’t end up with the other guy, so maybe I should have taken a chance,” Hart said years later. The actress regretted not taking things seriously with Reynolds, who later ended up with Blake Lively.
12. Megan Fox and David Gallagher
Neither Megan Fox nor David Gallagher are known for more than a few things. Fox is best known for her role in the Transformers franchise, while Gallagher is best known for being on the television show 7th Heaven, a show that ended more than ten years ago.
However, both actors have received a good amount of attention throughout the years. Back when one of her only roles was playing the mean girl in Mary-Kate and Ashley’s direct-to-video movie, Holiday in the Sun, Fox started dating Gallagher. He had a pretty steady career going and was pretty well-known due to his television fame.
The couple only lasted for a year. After 7th Heaven ended, Gallagher continued acting, but audiences certainly saw less of him. Fox, of course, went on to have a steady career as being the female lead in the Transformers series for awhile.
11. January Jones and Ashton Kutcher
Before Ashton Kutcher ended up with Mila Kunis, or even Demi Moore, he dated January Jones. The actor who is best known for That 70’s Show and Dude, Where’s My Car? ended up dating the future Mad Men star.
At the time, Jones wasn’t so famous. In fact, neither of them had an acting credit when they first started dating in 1998. Jones only had a few roles, but none of those showed up on her resume until 1999. Kutcher was also in the same boat, having only just landed That 70’s show. The two were both truly just starting out.
There have been rumors surfacing that Kutcher didn’t encourage Jones to act. In an interview from 2009, the actress claims that a previous boyfriend told her she didn’t have the skills to act. When asked about it later in another interview, Jones says she didn’t specifically name Kutcher, but she didn’t deny that it was him who insulted her back in the day.
10. Neil Patrick Harris and Christine Taylor
Yes, Neil Patrick Harris is openly gay. He has a husband, kids, and a pretty sweet life. Of course, rewind it back to a time where he was still Dr. Doogie Howser and not yet Barney Stinson, Harris was still trying to figure some things out.
Before finding success on How I Met Your Mother, Harris went out with Christine Taylor in 1997. You might know Taylor from her roles in Zoolander and Dodgeball, opposite her now ex-husband, Ben Stiller.
During an interview years later, Patrick had this to say about Taylor: “She’s the coolest, nicest chick ever. She’s an absolute catch. And I thought, ‘If I’m not going to feel the super sparks with her, it probably means I’m gay.”
At the time, unlike Harris, Taylor wasn’t super well known having only been in a few films, as well as the television series, Hey Dude. Needless to say, they both went on to have pretty successful careers.
9. Justin Timberlak and Jenna Dewan Tatum
Of course you know who Justin Timberlake is. He’s the triple threat who has rap battles with Jimmy Fallon, stars in both romantic comedies, as well as Oscar-winning films, and puts out hit albums on the regular. The guy is unstoppable.
This is not to say that Jenna Dewan Tatum isn’t as great. She’s just a little less known. You probably know her best from the film Step Up starring opposite her now-husband, Channing Tatum.
Dewan Tatum was a backup dancer for Timberlake both during and after his relationship with Britney Spears. The actress claims that things were never as crazy between her and Spears, and that there certainly weren’t ever any fighting or “dance offs” going on like the media claimed.
8. Minka Kelly and Donald Faison
Faison is best known for portraying Dr. Christopher Turk on Scrubs, Petey Jones in Remember the Titans, and Murray in Clueless. He started dating Kelly after his marriage to Lisa Askey ended.
Both actors were very close with each other and didn’t mind showing off a little in public. That being said, they didn’t really ever talk about being with each other. The public isn’t quite sure as to why the two broke up, but they did.
Faison ended up marrying Cacee Cobb, former assistant to Jessica Simpson, in 2012. Kelly began dating Chris Evans, then John Mayer, after the breakup. Supposedly, she has currently been dating Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams, though that has yet to be confirmed.

Yet another Drew Barrymore romance we weren’t as aware about back in the day, Courtney Cox’s ex-husband and the former child star had a fling in 1991.
David Arquette is best known for his roles in Scream, as well as Never Been Kissed. Both movies costarred Barrymore.
Arquette is also known for his relationship and breakup with Friends star Courtney Cox. Before those two got together, though, Arquette dated Barrymore before he was truly famous. He had only been on a couple of television shows when the two got together.
There are no hard feelings though. Arquette claims that Barrymore is the sweetest person you’ll meet while in Hollywood and that he’s happy with how his life has gone. He married journalist Christina McLarty in 2015.
6. Jason Schwartzman and Zooey Deschanel
Everyone knows New Girl star Zooey Deschanel. However, back when she was about to star in Almost Famous, a lot of people had no idea who she was.
Now known for her television show, as well as Elf and 500 Days of Summer, Deschanel is a household name. However, when she was only 19 years old, she dated successful actor, Jason Schwartzman.
It’s not like Schwartzman was that famous back then either. They were both only teenagers, still looking for their breakout role. The actor is now known for his roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Saving Mr. Banks, and Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer series’.
5. Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Campbell
It’s no secret that Leonardo DiCaprio has always had a thing for models. The actor, who finally won an Oscar in 2015 for his role in The Revenant, hasn’t had the most stable of relationships throughout the years.
While it’s never been truly confirmed, many speculate that DiCaprio and model Naomi Campbell have dated each other. They were supposedly a couple in 1995 and neither have truly come out and declared it to be false. At the very least, they had a fling.
At the time, DiCaprio was coming into his own. He had just stopped being “that kid from Growing Pains” and was turning into a bonafied star.
Campbell, who is best known for her modeling, has recently begun acting. She has made appearances on both Empire and Star.
4. Keira Knightley and Jamie Dornan
Keira Knightley is one of the only actors in Hollywood who has looked the same age throughout her entire career. Back in 2003, Knightley was best known for being in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and Bend It Like Beckham. Though a working actor, she had yet to become a household name.
The same year that Pirates of the Caribbean premiered, Knightley had started dating Jamie Dornan. If you don’t know him, he’s that guy from Fifty Shades of Grey.
The two dated from 2003 through 2005. Dornan hadn’t even started acting yet, with his first acting credit being from 2006.
When they first started dating, Dornan was more known for his modeling. The two met on the set of a photo shoot and that was that.
3. Helen Mirran and Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson only had a minimal amount of acting credits when he landed the role of Gawain in the movie Excalibur, which premiered in 1981. The film was based off of the well-known stories revolving around King Arthur and Merlin.
Neeson, who is best know for his roles in Taken and Love Actually, was an up and comer who fell for the now-Oscar winner Helen Mirren.
Mirren, who is best known for her roles in The Queen and The Hundred-Foot Journey, portrayed Morgana. She was six years older than Neeson who was only in his late twenties at the time.
The two dated for about five years before breaking things off. After the breakup, Mirren said, “We loved each other. It was difficult to let go.”
After their breakup, Mirren ended up marrying producer Taylor Hackford. Neeson, on the other hand, started dating Julia Roberts who wasn’t even twenty years old yet. Then after some time, he met Natasha Richardson. The two married, but she sadly passed away after a skiing accident in 2009.
2. Tobey Maguire and Rashida Jones
Rashida Jones has been on two very successful television shows including Parks and Recreation, as well as The Office. The actress, who has a degree from Harvard, is also a writer and producer. Some movies you might have seen her in include I Love You, Man and The Social Network.
Between 1997 and 2000, Jones dated future Spider-Man Tobey Maguire. Jones had just started acting. Maguire had a steady career, but he had yet to land superstar status. He would later find success in Pleasantville and The Great Gatsby.
Jones has been linked to other actors too, including Jake Gyllenhaal and her The Office co-star John Krasinski.
Maguire had been married for almost a decade to jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, until the two found trouble in paradise. They are both still committed to raising their two kids as a united front, though.
1. Kristen Bell and Matthew Morrison
Both Kristen Bell and Matthew Morrison have been the stars of hit television shows. Bell not only had Veronica Mars, but she was also the voice of Anna in Disney’s Frozen. Morrison is best known for portraying glee club’s favorite teacher on Fox’s Glee.
While it might be strange to imagine Bell not being married to Dax Shepard, she did have a life before meeting him. Bell and Morrison both attended the Tisch School of the Arts.
While there, they ended up dating for a bit. However, things didn’t work out, but the two still act cordial with each other when in passing.
Bell and Shepard now have two daughters together, while Morrison married Renee Puente in 2014. Morrison and Puente recently just revealed that they are expecting their first child very soon.
