About Us
Screen Rant had a humble start back in 2003 as a place to rant about some of the dumber stuff related to the movie industry. Although there was absolutely no plan to do anything beyond venting to a few online friends about movies, over the years the site has grown to cover more and more TV and movie news (and not just the dumb stuff) along with the occasional movie review.
The goal here at Screen Rant is to cover stories from a middle ground/average person perspective. We try to take a common sense approach to movie and TV news: stepping back and looking at the big picture to determine whether something is a good idea... or an idiotic one.
Movie reviews are written from the point of view of "was it a fun/exciting/scary/compelling movie" instead of from some high-brow, esoteric level that only other movie critics will relate to. On the other hand a movie has to have more than just big stars and fantastic special effects to be considered great by the folks at ScreenRant.com.
About the opinionated guy running the site
That would be me, Vic Holtreman. I'm originally from New Jersey and currently live in Utah. I've served in the Navy, and have been employed as a door to door salesman, construction worker, car salesman, waiter, mechanical drafter, mechanical designer, system administrator, and am now self-employed, running a number of websites about various topics.
I've always been a huge Sci Fi fan, starting with watching The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits when I was still too young for kindergarten, graduating to Star Trek reruns in the 70's and of course fully initiated by the original Star Wars. I'm a big comic book fan (still buy 'em) and lover of superhero, action movies and the occasional horror flick.
I'd love to hear from you so don't be bashful about dropping me a line! To contact me send an email to:
Kane Adrian
Based in Brisbane, Australia (that's right - a whole 'nother country), Kane spent the past few years working in music/DVD retail and studying. He has a degree in critical Film and Television Studies and World Religions (if you can believe that match), as well as a post grad certificate in Creative Writing. Before prioritizing personal interests over mainstream moneymaking, he worked an office job that satisfied an addiction to Star Wars action figures and other cool movie memorabilia.
His earliest memories are of watching The Empire Strikes Back at a drive-in from a baby car seat (no joke) and his dad buying him a Return of the Jedi pop-up book, so he was destined for life as a film geek from very early on. Just don't mistake him for a sci-fi fan - he hates Star Trek, has no interest in ever sitting through Babylon 5 and rarely finds anything of interest on the Sci-Fi Channel. His favorite films are Fight Club, Se7en, American Beauty and pretty much every comic-related thing ever put to the screen (yet he reads only two comic titles: Green Lantern and Iron Man - go figure).
He also writes reviews for Filmink magazine and Australian Stage.
Heath McKnight
Heath has been following movie news regularly since issue 0 of Cinescape magazine debuted in 1994 with the plot for the then-cancelled Aliens vs. Predator movie. Using his friend's dial-up, he would occasionally write movie news on the early internet forums known as BB Boards.
In 1995, he began writing about movie news in the print version of Advanced Iron, the premiere Iron Man fanzine, focusing on sci-fi, fantasy and action movies, TV and video game news, and developments on the Iron Man film (he's a big Iron Man fan). He keeps folks at the Advanced Iron forum up to date on the latest movie news and still writes for the e-zine version of Advanced Iron under the name "Metal Head".
Heath also writes about digital cinema and video technology for websites like Digital Media Net and Videomaker magazine. In addition, he is also a filmmaker whose latest feature, 9:04 AM, is making the film festival rounds.
He says that writing for Screen Rant is a dream come true for him, so I think we need to work a bit on his goal setting. :-)
