Fans of Lost that are counting down the minutes until their beloved show comes to an end will have to extend their countdown by thirty minutes. Today, it was announced that ABC will be extending the series finale of Lost by a half-hour. That means the final broadcast will clock in at two-and-a-half hours – longer than most films released today.

What’s the reason for the extended finale? Well, besides ABC getting quite a few more commercials in at $900,000 per thirty-seconds, it appears that executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have shot so much material for the finale that they deem crucial to wrapping up the series.

This past Monday, post-production was wrapped on the series finale of Lost appropriately titled, “The End.” Upon completion, both Lindelof and Cruse tweeted:

“We’re done. Amen.”

The thirty-minute extension of the series finale is only the tip of the iceberg, er island. ABC has turned the weekend of May 22 into “The Lost Weekend” starting with an “enhanced” replay of the two-hour pilot episode on May 22.

On Sunday, May 23, the festivities continue with a two-hour Lost retrospective entitled “Lost: The Final Journey.” Following that will be the two-and-a-half hour finale, with the local news to follow. After everyone finds out what their local weather will be, viewers can tune into a special Lost edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live with Lindelof, Cuse and several (TBA) cast members.

With so much Lost to come, there’s no way that fans can say that ABC isn’t giving it the farewell that it deserves. Frankly, I couldn’t be happier about that. I’m tired of shows that decide their finale should be “just another show.”

We’ve watched Lost for years, been confused about what’s going on for most of that time and now that we’re finally getting the answers that we’ve been waiting for. I want it to last as long as possible.

Two-and-a-half hour series finale? Pshhh… I say three or four hours. Bring it on!

What do you think of the series finale of Lost getting an extra thirty-minutes? Will you be tuning into everything on “The Lost Weekend?” Do you have any plans set for a Lost finale party?

If so, drop your address in the comments – we promise not to make a mess.

  1. An extra 22 minutes of the best show on television.

  2. The more; the better! We want ALL the answers.

  3. That last episode “the Candidate” was so sad. I wont give away why though for those that havent seen it.

    • I also found “The Candidate” to be sad…incredibly so. I hope everyone has seen it by now, but it was so sad all around.

  4. Of course, 30 Minutes more could mean it will just add more unanswered questions to the mix.

  5. I really hope it doesn’t just mean more commercials. In regular episodes I am shocked at how many commercial breaks there are, I can only imagine that the finale will be ridiculous.

  6. I stopped watching Lost at the end of S1 (not that I wanted to, just stuff happened) and because it is serialized, I never picked it up again until last week when I was on vacation. I watched S2-current during that time (thanks Netflix!).

I can’t wait to see what happens and the news of an extra half-hour is fantastic 😀

  7. “…the final broadcast will clock in at two-and-a-half hours – longer than most films released today”

No, it means it will be approximately 100 minutes long after 29+ minutes of commercials are removed.

Thanks to the elfin magic of Tivo, I rarely start watching Lost (or any other hour-long show) until 25 minutes after it starts. After skipping the recap and commercials, I usually catch up just as it is ending. I’ll start watching this episode around 9:45 pm (ET).

  8. YES, YES, YES I will be watching every moment I can get of the finale extravaganza!!! I agree…bring it on! I would happily watch it if it were 5 hours just for the finale.

  9. yessss can’t wait !

  10. I find television today to be mind-numbing. It takes away from life by making and keeping people stupid. Lost, much like another intelligent series, Six Feet Under, has given to my life, not taken away.

I am happy to hear that the producers have been able to get an extension for the series finale. I’d be even more happier if it were 4-5 hours long instead of 2.5 hours.
