X Men Quicksilver Marvel Comics Aaron Taylor Johnson Talks Adapting Quicksilver For The Avengers 2

During the press tour for Iron Man 3Avengers writer and director Joss Whedon teased two new roster additions, a “brother-sister act,” to be introduced in the next team-up film. We’ve since learned that the pair are indeed Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and that the sequel will be titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron. It wasn’t long after that casting reports had Aaron Taylor-Johnson listed as a top contender for the role of Quicksilver and the actor has since confirmed that he is in talks with Whedon and Marvel Studios for the part.

While promoting his next feature to hit theaters, another popular comic book adaptation in Kick-Ass 2, Johnson is unable to avoid the Quicksilver topic and as time goes on, he’s becoming more open on speaking to the topic, even confirming a few interesting details.

Speaking with Total Film, Aaron confirmed that he’s in talks with Marvel Studios for the part but that he’s not yet signed for anything. Even without it being official, the star of Kick-Ass 2 is doing his research and is interested in the relationship with Quicksilver and his sister Scarlet Witch.

“There’s years – over 50 years – of backstory on him all there to use, and I like doing that. Him and his sister [Scarlet Witch] have been abandoned by their parents and their father, and they grew up in Eastern Europe defending and looking out for themselves and each other… His sister really is his guidance – emotionally she’s the one who looks after him, and vice versa. He’s very overprotective physically – he doesn’t want anyone touching her.”

On Quicksilver’s personality and how he’ll be different from the rest of the team:

“He has real anger frustration – I like that. I always thought it’d be quite funny if you saw him eating loads and people asked him why and he’d explain it’s because he’s burning so much energy all the time. Or ideas that you’d see him come back round – but he’s already nipped out and got his lunch somewhere else. He just got bored – his attention span is so fucking quick.”

That’s not unlike the brief description Evan Peters gave at Comic-Con of his version of the character in director Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Peters gave an example of Quicksilver getting very frustrated waiting in line behind one person at an ATM because time moves so slowly for him, and quick, menial tasks become long, drawn-out events.

To its credit, the Phase One films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe leading up to and including The Avengers offered faithful adaptation of the visual designs of most of the characters. Hulk is a big green monster, Captain America wore his red, white and blue duds, Iron Man was gold and red, and Thor was actually an armored viking god wielding a big hammer. With Quicksilver, who sports white hair in Marvel Comics, talks really fast and has several interesting costumes that may (along with his powers) remind you of DC Comics’ The Flash, his physical transformation is a big topic point of Taylor-Johnson’s discussions with Marvel.

“That’s what we’re in talks about really, right now – how I could become that character and not feel forced. I might not look right with white hair, and the accent may be wrong… it just doesn’t work like that… It’s about – unless you’re Jim Carrey or Nic Cage and go ‘This is the character’, people go ‘OK, OK…’ When people haven’t been shown your range like that, then they’re a bit more skeptical – they may not want you to push the boundaries in that way. But that’s what I’m interested in as an actor…”

The Brit actor seems to be interested in going all-out with his portrayal of Quicksilver should he be cast, but we know the character’s origins – and that of his sister – will be changed from the comics since Twentieth Century Fox does own the rights to them as well – they’re mutant children of Magneto in the comics. What we’re interested in is seeing where they come from and how they acquire their powers, if not for mutation. Will they even have the same names (Pietro and Wanda Maximoff) as their counterparts from the books?

Is Aaron Taylor-Johnson a good pick for Joss Whedon’s take on Quicksilver in The Avengers sequel? Let us know in the comments!

  1. lets just hope they dont make super speed look like super slow motion with a blur behind it. I hate when they dont get super speed right. Also this Aaron taylor would be great. Im just figuring out how they are going to incorporated these “mutuants” into this franchise. They are going to need a remarkable story indeed.

    • I’m pretty sure they are ignoring the mutant aspect of their origin

      • Terregen mists

        • This.

      • uummm kay… I was just saying how they are going to be introduced but whatever.

      • It’s because 20th Century own the rights so Marvel altered the stories for the film

    • i don’t get it if marvel are going to use quicksilver/kick ass guy why is fox using another quick silver in their movie by the time this happens we will have two different people playing quicksilver, not sure if my info is right but if it is that sucks.

      • They’re two different studios. Why would you expect them to use the same actors? Fox owns the X-Men and Marvel/Disney owns the Avengers. I believe we will have two different people playing Scarlet Witch, as well.

        • Scarlet Witch isn’t going to be in DoFP. and this dude above us is dumb as hell. Read up my friend.

          • Not dumb, just probably hasn’t read as much as we have. And yeah, I just read today that there’s no Scarlet Witch in DOFP. Kinda weird, I could understand only one of them in Avengers 2 since their backgrounds won’t matter much, but seems like it should be both or neither for DOFP. I don’t have a ton of faith in Singer, but I guess we’ll see what happens.

  2. Oh, god Jesus yes please! Want that so bad. Please, Joss. Please please please.

  3. Quick someone give Brian a wet nap I think he soiled himself, but back to this casting of quicksilver, Arron Johnson may be a good fit, but honestly it comes down to content. I’ve never been a fan of the two characters, especially Wanda, but I’m still having an issues with why. With the amount of characters out there, they really need to be important to the story development. That said in Joss we trust so have at it sir.

  4. I really like Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Loved him in Kick-Ass and can’t wait to see him in Godzilla. I think he’ll be great for Quicksilver.

  5. He’s a good pick, IMO

  6. He is a good pick but adding 2 more heroes and a brand new unexplained villain you are asking for trouble. People are going to get watered down, and some may get lost in the shuffle completely. To many characters can cause problems

    • Really…Only three new characters and you call BS. Weak.

    • Um… What are you talking about? Unexplained villain? Do you not know Ultron? And in the first Avengers movie they threw in Black Widow and Hawkeye when they hardly had any kind of important role in Iron Man and Thor respectively.

  7. “I always thought it’d be quite funny if you saw him eating loads and people asked him why and he’d explain it’s because he’s burning so much energy all the time.”

So like Dragon Ball then when Goku is seen constantly eating piles and piles of food due to the energy he expends? I can totally see Joss taking a visual gag from one of those episodes.

I’d also like to see elements of the Ultimates version when he talks about being over-protective of his sister. I mean, Tony Montana in Scarface had incestuous overtones with his over-protective relationship with his younger sister (and she even tells him to screw her if that’s why he doesn’t like the idea of her dating before she dies).

I didn’t like Kick-Ass and haven’t seen him in anything else but he is a great actor with a huge career ahead of him (might catch Nowhere Boy on TV sometime this week, he played a young John Lennon if I recall and got rave reviews for it).

    • Can you imagine just Thor and Pietro sitting at a table and stuffing their faces? Now that’s a funny mental image.

    • As long as they don’t pull a Raimi on us and have Quicksilver super fast Travolta-ing in the street, I’ll be fine.

    • Nowhere boy is a fantastic movie with great performance from Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

  8. If they are done well TOO many characters can and will work! But I’m just trying to figure out WHY these two characters? There are SOOOO MANY to choose from that are NOT mutants, I just do not understand these roster moves!!
What? just because Joss likes them? That is a very bad reason IMO, I don’t very much like these characters, but my mind could be changed! I just wish they (Marvel) would have went in a different direction!!

I think Johnson could be a good choice, but I don’t think QS and SW are good choices!

    • OOOPS ^^^^^^ If they are done well ALL the characters can and will work!!
that is what I meant to say…. NOT (TOO MANY) Characters

    • The guy writing and directing the movie liking particular characters is reason enough to think they deserve to be in it.

Maybe the new additions will help defeat Ultron and become inducted as members of the team by the end of the movie?

  9. Great Casting. But, whose the Scarlet Witch? A certain white haired blond from GOT? Maybe.

    • Saoirse Ronan wasn’t in GOT. You’re thinking of Emilia Clarke.

      • I like thinking of Emilia Clarke…

        • …without the blonde wig…

      • He was suggesting that Clarke would be good for the role.

        • Please gods no.
Keep Emilia “whurr mah durguns” Clark away from my Avengers.

          • She’s fantastic in GoT.

    • Ready for it?

Whedon is going into Black Widow’s backstory in Russia, SHE’S going to be Scarlet Witch!

      Pietro is her brother.

This one will test the fans more than the mandarin twist, that’s why it’s under wraps and we have no idea who’s playing the scarlet witch yet.

      • Uh. No. I think not.

      • With their treatment of the Mandarin I can see why you would think this way. But let’s hope this would never happen.

    • Are you really comparing the mandarin to avengers members? Scarlett witch had a major marvel event house of m when she damn near de powered all mutants! Mandarin has never had any place in marvel besides iron man

  10. No its not a good pick if he wont wear white hair which is a big part of quicksilver. Their origins do not need to be mentioned in event mcu can someday
get xmen back. Them not being magnetos children and given new origins when its not necessary would be idiotical.

    • I’m sorry, how is white hair a big part of Quicksilver? It may be a big part of the character’s look in the comics, but it’s not a big part of the character. It’ll be fine if he doesn’t have white hair.

      • Ok, true, big unique part of the comic character’s look. But the character neds to look like how we all would recognize him, and that includes the white hair. And costume. The closer to the comics characters, the better, in almost all cases. This movie does not feature Felix The Cat, Woody Woodpecker, or Bozo The Clown. It features Quicksilver. So let’s make sure we can recognize him on sight.

        • Quicksilver wore a blue or green onesie with a lightning bolt on it and an unnecessary belt. In some iterations, he also had underpants on the outside. I’d say lets actually be at least a little less than 100% faithful.

          • I don’t know what the rest of the outfit looks like but what’s wrong with the version at the top of the page? …and the photo of A.T.-J. already looks like him. Doesn’t need white hair – the blonde works, just brush it back.
I think he’d be a great choice, and don’t much care what he wears.

      • Yep, Yeah he does…

  11. 2 Quicksilver’s (X-men: Days of Future Past)now Avengers sequel??? …there’s a bunch of characters Whedon could choose

  12. Imagine Pietro eating as ton of shwarma with thor and iron man and hulk. That would be awesome.

Aaron taylor-johnson is a great choice and i think they need a rather busty, cleavage heavy girl for scarlet witch for personal reasons…

    • Yuk, bet he’d be running to the bathroom to blow chunks, faster than anyone! Gimmeee a Big Mac and I am good to go (actually, I prefer a McRib).

      • Mcrib? now thats a yuck! right there, the worst ribs you can ever eat. No wonder they stop making them

  13. I will be pretty upset if they make up a different origin story for them. They should just find a way to include them in the movie without discussing their origins. I don’t really see why they can’t call them mutants though. While I understand that they can’t talk about Magneto or the X-Men, they should be able to say that they are mutants, or AT LEAST that they were born with their powers (they could skip powers appearing in teenage years and whatnot).

  14. By the way, having Quicksilver eating gluttonously would be taking a card directly out of DC’s Flash, so I don’t think they should do that.

    • Except that Quicksilver also does this in the comics. Since both speedsters do it, whoever does it in the movies first gets the trademark.

Since we have no worries about a Flash (other than the new Flash tv series) anytime in the near future, Marvel can safely give the trademark to Quicksilver and it’ll be Flash who’s copying it on the silver screen.

      • Fair enough. Didn’t know Quicksilver did it too. My exposure to the character is all from cartoons and I don’t remember him being a glutton (not saying it was never shown in cartoons, just that I don’t remember it). Plus since Quicksilver has never been a major character in any cartoon and various incarnations of Flash have been, I guess I am just more familiar with Flash. I don’t think it’s really a trademark issue though, they can both do it without really copying. After all, it makes sense, their metabolism must be insane for them to be able to move so fast.

    • Eating gluttonously is taking a page out of my biography of my teenage years gobbling out at the local Jack-In-A-Sack Restaurant!

  15. And please, Jos, stay far, far away from the way their (incestuous) relationship is portrayed in the Ultimate books.

  16. So I keep reading in all of these articles about how difficult it’s going to be to rewrite Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch’s backstory, but I don’t see why they have to address the Magneto and mutant aspect at all. I think it would work fine to imply/explain that Pietro and Wanda were simply born with powers… Fox may have rights to the word “mutant” but the word itself never needs to be said. As for the Magneto part… even in the comic books that wasn’t revealed until some time after the twins’ first appearance.

    • Completely agree.

We don’t know Hawkeye’s backstory. We don’t know Black Widow’s. A simple nod from SHIELD stating they picked up a couple supers and they want to test them out on the side of good would be more than enough.

      • I’ve read that they are not going to be allies, at least not right away. I don’t really see why they can’t mention mutants in a Marvel/Disney film (I understand the copyright issues with Fox owning X-Men, but them being barred from saying “mutant” seems a little extreme), but you’re right, they don’t even have to say the word.

        • Did you know they can’t copyright the word Frankenstein (just the story)? I read that somewhere.

  17. While maybe not a popular choice, I always thought Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter) would make a perfect QS. He is an excellent visual match (even if given white hair) and we know he can play that adversary role well.

And yes I’m all for QS having short, white, straight hair. I don’t know if the particular hair shape would work but it definitely needs to be white (possibly happened when he got his powers?)

    • that’s a good option, But for me, it would put too much draco in QS:)

  18. Aaron jaonson is a good pick and if they want to avoid conflict with x-men fox, they could just have a short scene, in avengers age of ultron, where quiksilver or scarlet witch c explain to one of the avengers or nick fury that they got their powers from mutations like there father who was an evil mutant. One of them can also say that they helped their father do things that they werent proud of, and they want to make up for what they did

  19. That can pramote the quiksilver in the new x-men who could be the young quiksilver that was before the avengers quiksilver. I would like to see Aaron Johnson in the Blue quiksilver costume rather than the green one

  20. On the question why these two characters? I think we’re seeing a good reason right now. If they get the two characters out on the big screen (which they already did) they control the conversation of shared superheroes; which delegitimizes the other studios version a little. In business, this is a marketing strategy called “first mover advantage”… plus I think they’re doing a way better job…just saw Winter Soldier and Quiksilver and Scarlet witch were the best part of it!!!! I can’t beleive that’s the kick ass guy but he looks awesome!!!

  21. I forgot the other two reasons to include the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, so I’m adding them as follows:
    1) Whedon said “visually, these guys will be different”
    2) They want Fox to suffer

  22. I don’t like the fact that QS Will be portraid by 2 different actors n quite a short time. But given that. I will just wait for who pulls it off better. Xmen Qs has long white hair with I believe some streaks of black (Looking at the trailer). I think Blonde will give about the same effect for Aarons QS.
I wonder if they will keep the word Miracle for Mutant,, Which I reall hope not. I know because of Fox that they can’t use the word Mutant or any reference to the Xmen. Pietro is a wise ass, he could simply say “Because I do” if anyone asks for the origin of his powers and totally get away with it. I hope it won’t be the onesie suit but something that will give a resemblance to it.
Seeing as DoFP will just portay him in civvies and a set of welding gogges I think anything else would be a HUGE improvement
