A movie by any other name…

As many of you have already heard, Episode 3 of the Star Wars trilogy has a name: Revenge of the Sith. It’s an okay title, I suppose, but the word “Sith” doesn’t sound very ominous or powerful. It sounds kind of dorky, to be honest. Plus, the title sounds an awful lot like the title of Episode 6: Return of the Jedi. (Actually, the original title of that movie was Revenge of the Jedi, but it was changed at the last minute.) It could be called Howard the Duck Goes to Washington, and it wouldn’t matter. The name recognition and marketing will pretty much guarantee a box office take in the hundreds of millions. However, since Lucas is the sole writer and director of this movie, it’s probably going to suck just like the previous two films in the series did. (That’s not a slam on Lucas per se, but during the original trilogy, he was smart enough to know when to step back and let other people sweat the details.)

Vic always keeps talking about his childhood memories getting decimated… this is mine. The original series (episodes 4-6) had its flaws, but I enjoyed how those movies appealed to kids and adults alike with their sense of adventure and wonder. Any adult who enjoys this latest string of crapfests is either a die-hard fan, or in denial. I have found precious little to enjoy about episodes 1 and 2, and I will be shocked if episode 3 turns out any better. It’s a real shame, too, because I wanted to like these movies. I really did.

  1. Ouch. :-)

    Vic

  2. Some things are better left as they are.
The original Star Wars Trilogy is one of them.

More special effects doesn’t make a better movie. WHEN will they accept this as true?

We don’t want fluff… we want a STORY!

I am not holding my breath for this movie either.
But I will go see it. Out of loyalty to the Original.

  3. I’ll see it as well. I saw Episode I in the theatre and borrowed a DVD copy to watch it again. That podracer scene/scheme was way too long and pointless except to sell more toys and video games (and that is a jab at Lucas).

Saw Episode II in the theatre as well. An overbloated image-fest light on story and kind of boring, yet better than Episode I. That is the only time I have seen Episode II.

Just wait until SNL or MadTV get a hold of that title. Sith rearranges nicely into my sentiments toward the whole effort of the franchise (I-III).

I’ll see “Revenge of the Sith”, but only once with no ambition to own it on DVD.

  4. :P i think that # 1 was alright and #2′s scenes with Anakin and padme were good.. it showed you the love anakin really had for padme and how he was in #2 getting stronger in his powers. Revenge of the Sith will be a movie i’ll buy on dvd and vhs because words can’t explain how good that movie was and how it explained alot about 4,5 and 6. I must admit that the last trilogies are alot better but i still think lucas did his best on the last movie.
