Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cancer Comedy Renamed ’50/50′

Cancer is rarely funny, but don’t tell that to Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The pair of actors are teaming to appear in 50/50, formerly titled I’m With Cancer, a new comedy from The Wackness director Jonathan Levine.

The movie, which is based on a script from Will Reiser, and mirrors Reiser’s real-life experience being diagnosed with cancer, features Gordon-Levitt as a young man fighting cancer and Rogen as his supportive friend. James McAvoy was originally going to star in the film, but decided to drop out for personal reasons.

Alongside Rogen and Gordon-Levitt, 50/50 features an impressive cast including Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Philip Baker Hall, and Anjelica Huston. In addition to its new title, 50/50 also pushed its release back a week to September 30th, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are two of the busiest guys in Hollywood. Last month, Rogen tried his hand at playing an action hero in The Green Hornet, and the actor has lent his voice to the upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul and the animated film Kung Fu Panda 2. Meanwhile, Gordon-Levitt is coming off the massive success of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, and has recently joined the cast of Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Given their respective schedules, it’s kind of amazing that the actors were able to cross paths.

I’m excited to see Rogen and Gordon-Levitt in 50/50. JGL is definitely a talented actor, so you know you’re likely to get a good performance from him. Also, while he is known for his comedic roles, Rogen has a knack for playing characters with a lot of heart. Putting the two together in a movie about friendship in the face of cancer will likely get a lot of laughs and, if played right, maybe even a few tears.

Does this project sound like something you’d be interested in seeing? Let us know what you think of the Rogen/Gordon-Levitt pairing in the comments.

  1. isnt this called “Funny people”?

    • You know, that was exactly what I was thinking. Maybe it’ll be different though, since Adam Sandler stopped having cancer like 10 minutes into that one.

  2. Kinda reminds me of Funny People as well. JGL is a wonderful actor and still under appreciated in my eyes. Rogen brings a very sincere and humorous tone with him that will give the audience a breath of cancer free air! I’m excited for this one! Levine is a talented guy and hopefully this puts him in the front running of some bigger productions down the road, I know he was interested in doing a retelling of Logans Run which would be awesome.

    • It’s Levitt, dear. :)

Can’t wait for it, too, though. :D GO JGL! \m/ <3

      • “It’s Levitt, Dear”

Rofl that’s Why i just call him JGL lol helps me keep from being ashamed I spelled his name wrong.

  3. I’ll watch anything with JGL.. in fact, I think I’ve seen every one of his movies, and Anna Kendrick is definitely one of the best young actresses out there. I’ll be checking this one out for sure.

  4. I’m not a huge Rogen fan really, but JGL is the man! I think they could be a really cool combination.
Hopefully the cancer subject matter doesn’t end up getting overly raunchy.

    • *Like

  5. this seems interesting, hopefully we’ll see seth rogen’s acting chops expand a little, i’m a fan of both these guys and looking at the rest of the cast it should be a pretty decent movie if done tastefully.

  6. As a comic who’s fighting cancer right now I’m looking forward to this one coming out.

    • Keep up the good fight, my man. Here’s hoping you’re cancer-free by the time this movie comes out.

  7. “Also, while he is known for his comedic roles, Rogen has a knack for playing characters with a lot of heart.”

    Two questions Rob….When and when?

    Third question ….Seriously Rob?

    • I haven’t seen all of his movies, but in the ones I have seen he’s been a “lovable loser with a heart of gold.”

  8. Cancers funny?

    Yeah all pass.

    • I’m a Cancer. Ha. Made a funny.

But cancer isn’t a funny subject I will agree with you 790, but it definitely gives a lot of heart to films if done right. Tear jerking. Add a little comedy to lighten it.

      • I’m actually a Leo BTW.

      • Big Pharma, would love to instill in peoples minds that cancer is just a fact of life. Everyones going to get it.

        Its big business.
These kinds of films, only aid that crusade.

  9. I’m game to watch. I really like Rogen and I’ll watch most of his films, but I’ll watch anything with JGL at least once to give it a chance. Hated 3rd Rock From the Sun, but he’s really grown since then and only bad film of his I’ve seen is GI and it’s not his fault at all.

Sounds like like it just might be a smart comedy with lots of heart so right up my ally much better than slap stick stupid toilet humor like Will Ferral and Jack Black movies.

  10. Well.. i for one really thinki that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a very talented actor.! I have loved every single role in every movie of his. Well that i’ve watched anyways.. & i’ve never had even known it was him. Until the film “Inception” i really enjoyed his performance so i decided to find out what else he’s acted in. Come to find out that was not the first role of his that i had watched & enjoyed it. Kudos to Joseph.! Can’t wait to see the next film at the end of the year. I know with him it will pack a punch. :D

  11. I’m sorry, after Green Hornet Seth Rogan is dead to me.
And that’s just after watching the trailers.

  12. Some of my favorite actors paired up, I’m excited!
