New ’47 Ronin’ Trailers: Epic Samurai Battles in CGI Grandeur

Published 1 year ago by

In 47 Ronin we get the embellished legend of a true Japanese tale about 47 disgraced and disenfranchised samurai who went on an unthinkable suicide mission to avenge their slain lord. Of course, in the Hollywood version of things, the story centers on Kai (Keanu Reeves) a half-breed samurai warrior sold into slavery, who becomes the ‘chosen one’ hope for the disgraced samurai – who are now battling an evil sorceress (Pacific Rim star Rinko Kikuchi) and her demonic hordes.

Along with the new UK trailer above we have a new domestic trailer fro the film, which you can view below:

We put the UK trailer up top because in all honestly it was the better of the two, laying out the film’s story in much more epic scope and detail than the random montage style of the domestic trailer, which runs too long and shows off too much. In fact, between these two trailers – and the many trailers that preceded them – it seems like we’ve already caught glimpses of all the major action set pieces included in the film (Keanu vs. the Troll, Ronin storming the fortress, Keanu vs. Dragon Lady, etc.).

What we don’t see much of, is the camaraderie (or lack thereof) between Keanu and the collection of Japanese actors playing the Ronin. There is clearly a character story at the heart of this film, but there has been little of it hinted at in these trailers; what we ARE being sold on, however, is the visual design of first time feature-film director (and Ridley Scott protege) Carl Rinsch. And, while that visual design looks pretty inspired (especially for the 3D format), it’s also a tech-heavy style that seems somewhat at odds with the period piece setting – rather than creating a samurai version of 300 like Universal was no doubt hoping for.

Still, a Christmas Day release date practically ensures that this action flick will turn at least a moderate profit.

47 Ronin will be in theaters on December 25th.

  1. This would be much better if A, they staid true to original story and B, Keanu Reeves wasn’t in it playing “the chosen one” other than that should be great.

    • I’ve never liked Keanu Reeves, either, except in the first Matrix. Of course, though, many others could have played his role and done just as well, if not better, in it. Don’t know how he ever became so popular, but clearly, his popularity has waned in recent years.

      • I enjoyed Bill and Ted and Point Break but that’s just nostalgia talking, if those movies came out now I think I would have a different view of them.

  2. And this is why we Brits don’t stumble into any old movie at random without seeing a trailer first to determine whether it’s worth spending money on or not like the Americans do. The quality and style of our trailer says it all really, giving off the feeling that Brits want to know whether a movie is good or bad based on the trailer while US audiences are treated like children and given nothing but action to lure them in.

Just one more reason to despair of Hollywood’s actions really.

Anyway, it looks good but I won’t be going to the movies at Christmas time.

    • We Americans say screw the trailer, you Brits are always way too stuffy, watching movie trailers. While we are stereotyping, go brush your dirty teeth for Queen and country, and sod off. LOL

      • Yes, but the Brits do have a couple things we Americans do not: Princess Diana and Princess Kate. Couple a good lookers, you have to admit. Makes me flip my tea and crumpets, and I’m an American Apple Pie eater!

        • I’m British and I watch the trailer but then check to see if the writers and directors have made anything good. If not, then that’s where I lose interest.

    • Geez,a British movie fan, going on a American movie site to insult Americans,I guess we should be honored. Thanks? I guess. I,for one will be seeing 47 Ronin. No.1 reason, because I love fantasy and/or sci-fi action, like most of us “yanks”. No.2 reason, I love me some Rinko Kikuchi, ever since the movie Babel,I been a fan of hers, and seeing her in Pacific Rim,has made me even more of one.At least it will be better than sitting in me flat all day watching American football, right Dazz?

    • Dazz, why do have this ongoing inclination to belittle and insult American movie audiences? I’ve seen you do it now under multiple discussions. Let it go, man. In doing it, you say more about yourself than anyone else.

      • Wait a minute, when did I insult American audiences here?

I insulted Hollywood studios who seem to release dumbed down trailers for American audiences and treat you guys with contempt instead of actually acknowledging that you have intelligent audiences waiting to be blown away by trailers instead of just being shown “action, action, action” all the time.

I think a few people who replied to my comment owe me a massive apology right now. Not Goldilocks though, he’s cool.

        • In fact, yeah, I’ll take the apology from everyone other than Goldilocks and then I’ll take my love of movies away and just go back to being completely ignorant of any movie news and trailers until I see trailers on TV a week before release rather be completely insulted by people taking my comment that actually backed you guys up way out of context.

I’ll give it 24 hours from now.

        • You are the one who owes us an apology, Dazz. Your first sentence…

“And this is why we Brits don’t stumble into any old movie at random without seeing a trailer first to determine whether it’s worth spending money on or not like the Americans do.”

As I indicated before, I have noticed you making similar comments under other discussions as well. These comments say much more about you than those you are attempting to belittle. It’s your choice if you want to continue or stop making them. I’m just hoping to give you some constructive feedback, if you are open to it…

    • I’m American and this movie looks like complete sh1t and anyone that’s willing to spend 10 bucks on this garbage should stop watching films. I know most Americans are dumb, what can we do?

      • Well, duh-duh-duh…I think this looks good, and I already have it listed on my Netflix list, where it won’t cost me anything to watch, when it becomes available. One little fee, and the rest is free! I love me some Netflix by the nutsackful!

      • Maybe you are the one with bad taste….hmmmmm

  3. I still think this will make a fine film. A film made to entertain. That’s all.

  4. This looks incredibly mediocre.

  5. +1

  6. If a black were leading them, they would be sitting on their butts on welfare without the ambition to go fight evil sorcerers and demons like good Ronin should.
There, put that in your tailpipe and smoke it.
How come someone always has to bring up race?
    Oh, because they are biased.
    I am not.
If your comment was derogatory to blacks, I would defend them, just as since it is derogatory to whites, I am defending them here.
I am simply reacting to your comment.

  7. This looks really awesome !
Hope it has a running time of 3 Hours and takes it epic time to tell the story !

  8. That was unnecessary , you can make your point with out being a prick.

  9. Keanu is half asian and has been working on this for a while. So it’s nowhere near as egregious as the Forbidden Kingdom where the white american kid was thrown in due to executive meddling. A real waste of a team up of Jackie Chan and Jet Li honestly.

  10. Looks like a good film from an artistic direction. Hopefully the characters will be interesting enough to root for. Feels like something that could be a grand trilogy considering it’s sweeping landscapes and fantastic creatures inspired by Asian mythology. The story seems simple enough too to spread over a long period (Good vs a great evil a la LOTR and a million others)

Hopefully it does well so we see some more fantastical films. I’m a bit tired of realistic “Edgy” stuff

  11. Look at her cheekbones, damn!

  12. u put rinko in your movie and i am in.ever since the movie Babel she is just cute .
