3D Avatar Footage to Premiere at Comic-Con

Website Dorkshelf is running an exclusive claiming they have it from a “reliable” (though uncredited) source that footage from James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic Avatar will be screened at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. And not only will the Avatar footage be shown, according to Dorkshelf, but preparations are being made to show it in full “photorealistic” 3D, just as Cameron intended!

Rumor is that the Avatar footage will be screened during the film’s hour-long Comic-Con panel on July 23rd, which will feature appearances from Avatar stars Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, as well as Cameron himself. The location of the panel will be the H hall at the San Diego Convention Center, which is allegedly being converted into a 3D movie theater for the event.

If this news pans out, I know where I’ll be the moment that panel starts: in a prime seat with my 3D glasses in hand.

Bloggers around the ‘sphere have all been speculating that there would be a sneak peek at Avatar during Comic-Con this year – especially when Comic-Con banners featuring Avatar started appearing in and around San Diego last week. It certainly would be prudent for Fox and Cameron to make a HUGE splash at Comic-Con, as Avatar has had little to no exposure to anybody but we, the movie-geek nation.

However, I suspect that whenever this photorealistic 3D technology starts wowing crowds, word about Avatar will spread overnight.

Avatar hits theaters on December 18, 2009. Comic-Con will take place on July 23-26, 2009.

  1. Lord, Please let this movie rule when it comes out and don’t let it be out performed by some stupid romantic-comedy.

  2. Doubtful…

  3. @Soundwave

Well I guess we’ll find out in a couple of weeks, won’t we? Beowulf 3D footage was premiered during Comic-Con, BTW.

    Vic

  4. Footage yes, trailer no. IMO at least.

  5. Soundwave, anything could happen these days, never know.
Watchmen had a lot of hype behind it, and well, what happened? I am like you man, I doubt Avatar will not perform well after all of Cameron’s hard work, but you never know.
There might be that one shanty movie that audiences might go to instead.

  6. SK-47

I think the movie rock and be awesome but I doubt we will see a trailer until just before the movie is released if at all.

  7. @Soundwave

Where above does it say “trailer?” It says footage.

we’re just talking here. i know you didn’t say there would be a trailer. no hostility. i just mentioned it because everyone wants to see a trailer and has been asking for one for a long time. these guys (including me probably lol) got you all worked up over this Transformers review. you don’t have to defend yourself all the time. just because those daniel or ken isn’t around defending you doesn’t mean you have to take offense :) i meant nothing towards you, more towards James Cameron.

oh and daniel and ken j
i think Vic can handle himself without you guys coming to his rescue. :)

  9. @James

I’m not worked up. There are just certain commenters that always seem to have an attitude so they’re on my radar screen.

    Vic

  10. Ohh, I’d better want a trailer, for the ones not attending like me. Maybe the footage itself will be leaked, but that would suck since it’s in 3D.

  11. Awesome news…

However i really want some clip on 3D specs to go over my glasses because wearing two paris of specs is really uncomfortable; clip on thingys should be provided imo.

Mini-rant aside, this film looks prety cool. We’ll all have a better idea of the quality when the trailer comes out though : )

  12. i myself would prefer footage just for the fact that trailers now a days show too much of the movie… if i were to make a trailer of a movie i made i would put soo much stuff in the trailer and when you see the movie… its a completely different thing…lol.

  13. When exactly is SDCC?

Because if someone videos it secretly and then uploads it on youtube directly afterwards, I’m going to be waiting with the words “Avatar movie footage from SDCC” in the search title hoping to see it before it gets taken down. :D

Kofi if they give you guys time to answer questions then ask when a trailer will come out, WE ALL WANNA KNOW!

  14. To ask questions*

  15. The Avatar presentation is on Wednesday, July 23rd.

    Vic

  16. I’ve had it with all these “uncredited sources.” Can’t Fox open their mouths for once and just TELL us what’s going on and when’s it’s going on???? Or maybe that’s just asking for too much.

  17. Hey, Vic;

Do you remember when film premiers used to come to the local cinema with a ‘programme’?

My Mum and Dad used to collect them. ‘West Side Story’, Dr Zhivago, etc.

I went to the ‘Firefly’ (Joss Whedon pre-screening) in Sydney, and we were all given programmes, CDs of the music, etc.

Do they still do that at Comicon?

  18. Photorealistic 3D was supposed to not require glasses. ???

So far this film warrants no over the top buzz it seems to be infecting people with.

  19. I believe digital 3d theaters are being developed for movies like this one. Certain big directors like spielberg and peter jackson have already started shooting in digital 3d. It of course will still be viewable in 2d but you won’t of course get the full experience. Oh and whoever thinks Avatar will purely be a love story is nuts. Cameron said it himself that the 2nd half of the movie is all action. Sounds epic I can’t wait for a first look.

  20. July 23?? Why not July 08?? lol dammit I’m impatient…

  21. @gottarhyme

They sometimes give out “goodie bags” at panels.

    Vic

  22. @James Cameron,
is that really you? Where the hell is True Lies 2!!!

    :D

Vic, are you going to be at comic con?

  23. @SK-47

Yes, I’ll be there – along with Kofi, Bruce and Rob K.

And no, that’s not really James Cameron. And if he tries posting comments pretending to be the “real” one, I’ll delete them.

    Vic

  24. My gosh people take a joke. Who needs tissues?

  25. Dorkself.com? a reliable source? really? you are actually creating a news blog from a site that gets 12 site hits a day? really?

    http://www.statbrain.com/www.dorkself.com/

Anyway, I think you would have to be living under a rock to not conclude they will be showing Avatar footage. Not exactly a big shocker here. So at least I credit dorkself for going with a high percentage success rate guess.

  26. @ X-Mentos,

I just read the Internet, bro. Find things where I can. Anytime you have a good direction for me, point it out.

  27. Wow, my website gets more than 10 times that every day… according to that though… I should check my own stats to see if it matches up, lol.

  28. Ok, actually, that site’s pretty accurate, this last week’s average is pretty close to the number that site came up with…

  29. @X-Mentos

Dude, cool your jets. Here’s the opening line of this article:

“Website Dorkshelf is running an exclusive claiming they have it from a “reliable” (though uncredited) source”

Notice we said “claiming” and “uncredited” in an effort to put this in perspective.

And just a little while ago, this was released on the official Comic-Con site:

Thursday – 12:45-2:00 20th Century Fox and James Cameron present Avatar— In this first public screening of footage in 3D from his much-anticipated action/adventure/fantasy, James Cameron, producer Jon Landau, and cast members take you to a spectacular new world beyond imagination. Conceived 14 years ago and over four years in the making, Avatar breaks new ground in delivering a fully immersive, emotional story and reinvents the movie-going experience. Hall H
