Director Ruben Fleisher’s new “hard R” comedy 30 Minutes Or Less opens in theaters this weekend (read our review). The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as a pizza delivery guy who is kidnapped by two would-be criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) who strap a bomb to his chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank or else…
We had the chance to catch up with director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and co-star/comedian Nick Swardson (Reno 911, The Benchwarmers) to talk about working with the other members if of the cast, the risks and rewards of free-reign improve, and being a part of the “summer of the R rated comedy.”
To put the interviews somewhat into context, it should be noted that we spoke with comedian Nick Swardson first, so when we ask Fleischer about “controlling the band of wild monkeys”… we are (affectionally) referring to — him.
It should also be noted that our chat with Swardson is absolutely NSFW, though we do believe it would fall under the “soft R” category, which is so rarely discussed, but one must assume exists if its counterpart “hard” does. The comedian was well into some off-the-rails remarks about the sick sensibilities that he and Danny McBride share when the interview cuts in — so we felt we had free rein to test the boundaries of his “sickness” a bit.
Take a look at the interviews below to get a sense of what it is like to direct a mixed bag of lunatics and gentle souls, and weigh in on one of life’s eternal questions — are you on team Skeletor or on team He-Man?
