3 More Disappointing ‘Dragonball’ Clips

Goku holding DragonballWith the U.S. release of Dragonball approaching, MTV Splash Page has exclusives that will make die-hard fans cringe. Hints of how adaptation was handled are here, it doesn’t look good.

Already released in various places around the globe, the marketing team keeps peddling this movie despite the negative press. The last time we checked, we had 5 character-centric TV spots and a name change but this time we get a little closer with actual scenes. Full of cheesy dialog, terrible acting and bad fight scenes, the three clips are excruciating to watch. You have been warned.

Goku and Chi Chi don’t meet at the World Martial Arts Tournament, but at high school. Awesome.

Sans-Turtleshell Roshi explains details to Goku and Bulma. Great.

Grandpa Gohan and Goku square off on wires. Fantastic.

Anyone planning to see this mockery, just rake your eyes out, it’ll be less painful. :P

Thanks FOX, I can always count on you to ruin childhoods. Between this and Street Fighter, I’d have to guess that you have something against 80’s babies. Either that or you just can’t adapt source material correctly.

Dragonball, sadly, will be released just a few days from now on April 8th.

Still looking forward to this? Or are you planning to burn FOX to the ground, too?

Well, the things I loved as a kid(during the 90’s) were mostly batman, spider-man, and maybe a couple of other comicbook heroes but although I don’t think I ever laid my hand on a comicbook, I was just way more into sports. When some kids were watching saturday morning cartoons with superheroes, I was watching saturday morning ESPN lol. That being said, I don’t get mad when FOX produces a movie that screws up the original content of something cause I don’t know the original content, but I would be super pissed if I was a superfan or something and FOX came in and screwed up everything which is what I hear they usually do. Why do the people who make the movie allow them to make the changes? Why do they even have a say in it at all? I usually ask what’s the difference between the movie and the original story and I gotta say the original story is better 90% of the time. Like I said it doesn’t really affect me cause I wasn’t a huge fan of comics or something like dragonball as a kid, but I feel for you guys.

The clip with actual action had me laughing a little bit — until the slomo effect to show his distorted mouth. Makes me think of a Jackie Chan movie: ignore the plot, expect bad dialogue, but enjoy the action…

It’s not a rental, it’s a 2am – can’t sleep – catch it on FX and when you do fall asleep and miss the end, you don’t ever think about it again…

“Why do the people who make the movie allow them to make the changes?”

the have to make changes when adapting a comic book(or book, video game, etc.)to live action to expand the target audience to not just fanboys, they’ve always done this, yes sin city and others were exact tranlations, but not all were successful, however i am in agreement that this movie is garbage, but manily b/c they kept too many elements from the manga/anime in tact for example: the cheesy dialogue is still present and roshi being a perv and the obvious wire work

Carl I couldn’t agree more! To quote Bobby’s mom from the Waterboy “Fox is the Devil!” I don’t understand how they thought this could be a good idea. This may be a bigger flop than Speed Racer! Thank God they didn’t do a Z movie! I shudder to think how they would ruin the Prince of All Saiyans!

Dang it. I would have loved to see a good DB movie.

@Mike

Don’t give them any ideas, please.

I ‘m still seeing it.

I’m a big DBZ fan but I’m not a fan who has to have my movie exactly the same as the source material. I didn’t think it looked that bad.

I guess I’ll let you all know soon.

What was wrong with the clips? Carl, it sounds like your just jumping on the “LETS HATE DRAGONBALL FOR NO REASON” bandwagon. You claim they are ruining your childhood, and that they arent sticking to the source material, but if your a “fan” you would know that Dragonball had alot of comedy in it, when i see these clips i see Dragonball.

Carl Lee says:

@INK
It’s a Dragonball movie, as in pre-Dragonball Z, so the source material is suppose to feature Goku (as a child) exploring the world with Bulma.

@Oscar!
I actually adore the television show and it’s manga roots. Dragonball has alots of comedy, but not during the fights.

This movie was probably going to be made sooner or later but the creative liberties that they took are not ones I agree with.

Yes, it was comedic, but it was also heart-warming. It was about friendships, fighting (winning and losing), learning lessons, getting back up and fighting again. In this adaptation, those qualities remain to be seen.

INK says:

@Carl

Semantics.
I know that Dragonball is suppose to be pre-DBZ.
And i KNOW what Dragonball is SUPPOSED to be about.
My point was I know what it should be but I am flexible enough to (hopefully) enjoy it for what it is.

“Dragonball has alots of comedy, but not during the fights.”
I think you may need to re-watch some episodes, Before DBZ there was quite a bit of comedy in the fight scenes. It wasn’t until DBZ began that the fighting begin to take more precedence over the comedy aspects of the show.

I’ll be going cinema to watch this, but with the minimum of expectations

whats soo bad about chi chi and goku meeting in high school and not in a martial arts tournament, i mean who cares where they meet what matters is the fact that they do meet

i have seen the movie already…and it was very dissapointing i must say…it was overall decent, but i mean they changed so very very key things in the story that just made it make no sense what so ever. i really hope they dont try to make a 2nd movie of this bringing out some of the DBZ people.

INK says:
March 31, 2009 at 12:54 pm

@MikeB

Is the only reason you didn’t like it because of the changes? Or where there other factors.
I’m just trying to gauge whether people unfamiliar with the animé or manga will enjoy it as a fun action pic.

i used to watch this show as a kid, both dragon ball and DBZ. while as a kid it was cool mostly because of violent fighting (i watched the uncensored version on Mexican television, nudity slight cursing and blood or gore is more acceptable) and cheeky depiction of women. But re watching it, it doesn’t hold up too well, it’s cheesy and there’s way too much pointless (endless) talking and power ups.

I saw about the first 40-50 minutes of the movie and while I will say it’s not great, It’s not unwatchable. I felt like I saw a very long episode of smallville. And I realized this movie (dialog, comedy, and action) was geared toward kids, even maybe a freshmen in high school, but no older. Thinking back I might have liked it if I had seen this at age 6-13. I won’t fully judge it until I see the whole thing.

Idk I can understand how diehard fans might not like it, fox did change so much of source material. But I just don’t get being upset (so I’ve read in other sites) by little things like goku not being asian (he’s an alien not asian) or it not being an adult matrix type movie(original cartoon at lest in America was more kid friendly, so its not surprising they would market to kids not adults).

This tears my heart out. I watched just about every episode of Dragonball and Dragonball Z when I was younger.

This movie seems more like a comedy than anything else.

INK says:
April 1, 2009 at 12:34 pm

FOr the last time –

Dragonball was more of a comedy. It wasn;t until DBZ came about that it started to focus more on the fighting, thereby taking a more serious note.

John "Kahless" Taylor says:

@INK
Heck, I remember a lot of DBZ being comical: Gokuh’s eating habits, Chi Chi’s insistence on Gohan’s education over fighting, Krillin, Master Roshi. I’m going to hold judgement until I see it.
