Totally agree on the confusion aspect. GitS made Akira look simple, and there is no way that they will deliver a movie that complex to mainstream America, and they have to do that to make the big bucks.

Again, best outcome for me is they make a decent movie that gets people interested in the source material.

I tried last night to find out if Oshi, Shirow, or Ito, who wrote the original screenplay would be involved. All I could find is that Production I.G. would be involved. From the tidbits they are a little bit more involved than just shopping the franchise. Of course the real test is what ends up on the screen. Everyone won't be happy with the end product that's a given too. Oshi is close to production I.G. so his advice, even though unsolicited will be heard. The one thing Oshi says about himself though is- paraphrased: [If I have a large budget I make a very visual film. If my budget is small I focus on story.] Keep that in mind if you want Oshi inspired material.

If the live action version story stays in the S.A.C. quality then it'll be good enough for me.
A Yoko Kano score would be nice too.

#1 Reason GitS is Going to Suck:
No one should understand GitS.

Okay, it's a generalization, but do you think Spielberg is honestly going to dedicate time to a film that's anti-mainstream? Even the Matrix couldn't stay the interesting course and ended up failing by the third movie. Plot will be watered down by writers - ensuing movie will be crap.

Put some of the Japanese manga team (or even people from the American translation team) into production, and maybe.

Although, in his defense, Spielberg is rich enough to do what he wants, and Lucas has been plying the "I'm looking forward to making post-Star Wars, real movies again" line.

I guess the real question is where does this decision really stem from: Spielberg's honest interest with the material, or his marketing team's honest interest with money?

Are they talking about live to 3-d like in "A Scanner Darkly", 3-d animation,or live 3-d, ? If they're talking about one of the first two, whats the point? For those who havn't seen, check out the "Dragonball" pics at: http://blogs.hoycinema.com/movieland/post/2008/01/15/exclusivas-fotos-e-informacion-del-pizarrazo-oficial-la, Chow young fat is playing master Roshi and the gals are all hotties!

You're right, it is wait and see, but you can judge by those involved, and, personally, Spielberg does not give me good feelings.

As for adaptions, I'm a HUGE DragonballZ fan and I'm desperate for the movie to be, well, decent. I mean passable would do. Please, just be watchable!
But if not, I will be very upset.
Adaptions are fine, as long as they fulfill on some levels. Please!

I'm a HUGE GitS fan, and I find it dumb when people say that a true fan won't like adaption. It obviously depends on how it turns out. Sure it could suck, but it could be just the opposite as well. It's impossible to judge a film that has not yet been made.

That said, it will be easier to judge as we monitor the development of the film. We will get info on the kinds of decisions the film makers are making, and how appropriate we as fans feel about them. Case in point: I remember worrying about Jon Favreau's adaption of Iron Man when it was first announced. He was a relatively untested quantity in terms of action films, and since that is my favourite superhero I was scared about what Hollywood would do to him (we all know the studios have screwed up enough good comic books). But the more I saw and heard about the films development, the more excited I got. Now I'm pretty sure it will rock. My point being, this is a wait and see kind of game. As a GitS fan though, it's hard to wait. :]

True, it could be cool, but I have bad feelings about the movies and those behind them too.
My hope is it gets people interested in the actual anime and they go watch it.

Doubtful, but I can hope. :)

790,

THE MATRIX was "inspired" by ALOT of things. Yes, GHOST IN THE SHELL was one of them. :-)

With this, DRAGONBALL next Spring and WBs plans for an AKIRA film series (with the first aiming for summer 2009 release), we're about to an overload of live-action manga/anime adaptations.

Big anime fan and love GitS. The movies have been very complex, so you know that will be simplified. Not sure how they will get the look in either, let alone the mood.
Nope, I don't see myself liking this at all. It might impress non-GitS fans, but not the converted.
