The 24 TV show/movie adaptation spent the majority of 2011 in limbo, following reports that 2oth Century Fox officials weren’t impressed with an early script draft penned by Billy Ray. However, unlike the screenwriter’s (seemingly) abandoned draft for The Hunger Games, Ray’s version of the 24 movie will reportedly remain partly intact – and was reworked by Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard) in the hopes of getting production going by Spring 2012.

According to Jack Bauer himself (Kiefer Sutherland), that is still the plan; now, the actor has even opened up a bit about when the film will take place, with respect to the 24 TV series finale.

Sutherland spoke about the 24 movie during the Fox panel at the Broadcasting Company Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour (there’s a mouthful) this past weekend and confirmed that the project is set to begin shooting by “the end of April, beginning of May” in 2012 – which also seems to indicate that Bomback made his end-of-2011 deadline and the final script draft is (basically) all ready to go.

On that note: Sutherland also revealed that the 24 movie will take place six months after the show finale and is plot-wise a “relatively direct continuation” of that concluding episode. While the actor was (naturally) mum concerning details about what exactly will happen next to his onscreen terrorist-fighting counterpart in the film, he did clarify that the 24 movie (like each season of the show) takes place over the course of a 24-hour day.

While Sutherland refrained from revealing what other actors might be returning from the original show, TV Guide‘s William Keck recently Tweeted that 24 producer Howard Gordon revealed to him that brilliant programmer/hacker Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) will figure into the plot, alongside a “new cast.”

There’s stil no word about who will be directing the 24 movie, but that should change in the near future; likewise, expect there to be more official casting announcements for the project over the next couple of months.

Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) will return in the '24' movie

It’s kind of difficult to assess how the 24 movie will turn out, at this point, especially with no director officially onboard yet. Feelings about the original show’s quality as a whole (and especially the later seasons) vary amongst viewers, but a feature-length film is another prospect altogether. Gone will be the “real-time” aspect of the storyline(s); not to mention, the movie has to do a good job of re-establishing the Jack Bauer character without relying too heavily on the original show to fill in the holes in his backstory and motivation.

That said: other TV shows have successfully made the leap to the big screen, without coming off merely as new generic blockbuster titles (Serenity is an excellent example of that). We’ll have to wait and see if 24 can do likewise.

Expect to hear more about the 24 movie in the near future.

  1. I still want to see John McClane, Jack Bauer, and Michael Weston all in one film together. But this is exciting news for the 24 franchise, and I can’t wait to hear more.

Oh and Sandy, you have a typo “willturn” as one word in the sentence below Mary Lynn Rajskub’s picture.

    • D’oh! My bad.

Thanks for catching that – it’s been fixed. :-)

  2. Can’t wait for the movie! Jack Bauer for president!

  3. I miss the show. I’ll remain cautiously optimistic about the movie for now, based on what I’ve read about it.

  4. Definitely can’t wait for some more “24”!! Monday nights haven’t been the same since it ended.

  5. So you’re saying I HAVE to finish season 8 in order to enjoy the movie? Uggg.

  6. The Series finale was so well done and gave plenty of closure. There simply is no need for a movie.

24 was unique and it’s absence has left a hole in television. I miss it and can’t wait to see more of it.

As you can see I’m extremely conflicted.

  7. I hope they pick Antoine Fuqua to direct the movie. Training Day, Shooter, Tears Of The Sun, and Brooklyn’s Finest are good films in my opinion. He can elevate the franchise so it won’t feel like just another tv episode on the big screen and since both Bond and Bourne movies is coming out this year, the 24 movie franchise needs to stand on its own because of the endless Bond and Bourne comparisons.

  8. I hate the fact that I’m probably going to buy a ticket to this.

  10. 24 was always great about “taking the next step” and “upping the ante.” I expect no less from this film. As long as Kiefer maintains the level of creative input and participation on the Bauer character that we know and love, the odds are higher that this movie will not only be a success, but a worthy bookend to the collection.

  11. Two things i love in this world are LFC and Jack Bauer.

  12. meeaow, yum yum

  13. I can’t wait to see what they do. I just hope they do the show justice!

  14. The only thing that worries me is this idea that Jack Bauer might get killed off. If this is even on the table I would much rather that the show ended precisely where it did. The idea that Jack Bauer did everything for his country but was ultimately shunned and forced into hiding once again is a sad and tragic ending, but he still gets to live his life. I think that was the most proper way for Jack Bauer to be sent off.

    • I utterly, COMPLETELY agree with this. It would negate everything that the final season led up to. I am confident that KS and the writers have something much better in mind. :)

  15. Question: is the movie going to be in real-time?

    • no it will be a 2 hour representation of a 24 hour day

  17. Personaly I hope they bring back kim raver! I hated how they left her character at the end of season 6. When she came on the show she added a hole new life to it and she was the perfect match for jack bauer. I feel her coming back and them reuniting would be an excelent way to right a wrong.

  18. What on earth could have been so difficult about turning out a script?

An idea occurred to me almost immediately upon the show’s conclusion. Since 24 has always been timely, they should have had Jack living in Europe…& having to help his British counterparts thwart a wicked attack on the international delegates, athletes & general public during the London Olympics.

But since they’ve been dicking around for 2 years, the REAL London Olympics will go on this summer without the film in theaters. It’s a shame really. I bet it would have been a huge hit if the timing was right.

    • That would have been a very cool premise. ‘Tis a pity they couldn’t get around to writing it in time.

  19. I’ve just finished the 8th season, and I can’t wait to see 24 movie! I hope, they could bring back Renee to the film, she is my favourite character in 24 (and Jack, of course :)). I know what happened with her in the season, but still I hope they could bring back her. She is the best woman for Jack, their teamwork in the 7th and 8th season are amazing! Jack deserves to get a happy ending with Renee, I think. Their chemistry in the last season is the best in the whole show. I hope…. please bring back Renee! :)

    • Actually, no. Renee is a dumb b****.
It’s all about Tony, Michelle, Chloe and Edgar.

  20. Wish they had got Abrams to do this. And, they HAVE to have Aaron Pierce!

    • Aaron Pierce FTW!!!!!

  21. Lets just hope Audrey Raines does return she was the best match for jack. I have nothing against Renee but Audrey was the better choice for jack there connection was so strong and they both went threw so much hell for each other they deserve to be together.

  22. It’s a pity that had 20th Century Fox not dragged their heels in both greenlighting the ’24’ movie at an appropriate time in order to allow pre-production to begin, as well as giving them at least the minimum amount of money to do it right that Kiefer Sutherland and producers wanted, about $45m, I have no doubt the ’24’ movie would have been shot this summer (2012), with Antoine Fuqua directing, which would have been a very exciting prospect indeed, alas…

Now that the ’24’ movie has been pushed back a year, and Fuqua has went off to another project, I would hope Fox reassess their perplexing decision to only give the movie a ridiculously low $30m budget, give them at least the $45m minimum they need to do it right, and hopefully sign up the former lead director on the ’24’ series, Jon Cassar, to direct the movie; with a tight-but-solid production of thirteen weeks – giving them around 72 days of shooting time – and an early February 2014 release… fingers crossed…

    • I was thinking, if all goes right, that a mid-November 2013 release would be possible, and preferable even.

      • B:-Rad dude, a November 2013 release would be both absolutely doable and a pretty good time to release the ’24’ movie. I probably should reassess the expressed view in my above post that February 2014 would be a suitable release date for the ’24’ movie as that month is now looking increasingly crowded, so either an October 24th (what other date could be more appropriate?) or a November 2013 release for Jack Bauer’s big-screen debut would sit just fine with me… as long as the studio gives them a decent budget to do it right, that is.

  23. I miss miss miss jack bauer and can hardly wait to see the 24 movie.Really jack should run for president. By the way where could i get one of those t-shirts that say jack bauer for president.

  24. They HAVE to bring back Audrey Raines, she and Jack belong together. I know its not revolved around romance and relationships and feelings and all that, but Audrey and Jack’s storyline was what kept seasons 4, 5 & 6 in sync. Season 7 comepltely blew me off trail, Renee was alright.. but Audrey risked her life for Jack in China. The least they could do is bring her back..?!?!?!?!

  25. Audrey is cookoo. Rene was “The One”.

    Teri bugged.

  26. Any updates????

  27. I need more 24 NOOOOW!! 😀

Jack Bauer was once charged with attempted murder in Los Angeles County, but the judge dropped all charges because Jack Bauer never “attempts” murder.
