  1. Man of Steel was definitely the best superhero movie of 2013. The Wolverine would be a worthy competitor had it not been for that terrible 3rd act.

  2. Kofi is spot-on about Superman as a character. Man of Steel tried to humanize him and give him flaws and it backfired. Now they will revert back to classic superman and people will complain that he is too perfect and overpowered and so not relatable.
Superman just can’t get a break since his personality is so strongly imbued in public consciousness . I am more excited about future of other characters who definetely have more flexibility than him and can be reinvented successfully.

  3. Woah woah woah…. hold on Rob

    Man of Steel-$670,000,000
    Cap America-$370,000,000
    Amazing Spiderman-$700,000,000

    Sequel and a half
    Cap 2-$700,000,000

    Disliked Sequel
    Amazing Spiderman 2-$700,000,000

    Sequel Prequel Reboot
    Xmen DOFP-$$700,000,000

Id say Man of Steel did pretty well since it had no momentum from its franchise previously like two of the others and wasnt a sequel.

I never liked dumb and dumber, that was more of my older brothers thing, along with american pie. I preferred Ace Ventura

I disagree with ben, while it may look better I say Dragons 2 is not better than 1 the, the more I think about it the less I like dragons 2. I think the characters have less character, Astrid instead of holding her own in the first just falls into the girlfriend role and the background characters are boring. I think the plot is all over the place, theres a generic bad guy whos setup to be great and is just defeated by a random ability not yet seen by toothless quickly to wrap up things. Theres the plot of Hiccup becoming Chief which is barely even a thing.
But my biggest complaint is the major death(spoilers)
of hiccups dad, saving him from a mind controlled toothless, which means that Toothless was going to kill him and all we get is a get away from him. I though we wouldve gotten more than that and its what the rest of the movie wouldve been focused upon, should we trust dragons 100% or should we protect our own and explore how hiccup really felt about his father when all he wanted was to protect his people, also setup because his mom says he took after her, I really wanted to see that conflict and character development and we get squat and quick wrap up.
Makes everything feel like a long episode and get you to start buying toys, wait for the next tv series and the eventual sequel in the works, very Amazing Spiderman 2 and I dont like, I feel its getting way overrated by everyone but my problem is saying its better than the original that actually dealt the concept of differences and conflict between culture.
    -rant end.

    I hate Rotten Tomatoes…

22 Jump Street, best movie of my summer, and one of my top funniest movies, up there
with Clue, The Inbetweeners Movie, and the Cornetto Trilogy.
Way better than the first, which I didnt care for that much.
Also I suggest you guys watch the At Midnight episode with them on. Ice Cube is surprisingly good candid.

    • I can understand your points. Have you watched the original recently? It suffers from some of those same issues though. I mentioned in my written review that side characters are underdeveloped but the Hiccup story is, in my opinion, much stronger this round.

      • On Fx yes, Now the side characters feel more real and less like funny slapstick machines or support copycats.
In the first movie they are used to express the culture of what theyre parents are teaching them and contrast to hiccup I felt
Its more on how theyre used.
Then there was that trapper guy, whats his face son of whats his name, erin?
So generic turn of character, “Ive been trapping dragons all my life-Omigosh you saved my life dragon, I am now good”
And the girl lusting after him did not register, and two of the guys fawning over her wasnt funny, all just generic kid cartoon been done before.

Ive seen like a few episodes of the series and I feel its just become an extension of that and already lost its originality or maturity in favor of marketing.
I loved the parent stuff, that drama, but the second part of the movie does nothing with it, just basically drops it after the fathers death, what a waste.
It all just feels like setup for the next series or movie-Now Toothless has spikes and is stronger-buy the new action figure-more dragons-new figures-hooray we have a franchise!
I feel like this is a real loss, as of right now I dont really have any excitement for another one.

        • * I wish we could edit!
          -*I mean now they arent

  4. Hey guys, first off, I have to say I love the podcast. Listen to it every week and check for each episode religiously at this point. Love your opinions on everything and just overall enjoy hearing you talk about these things.
That said, I wish we could have had more on How to Train Your Dragon 2 this week. Since this week all that’s coming out is Jersey Boys (not a blockbuster) maybe you could have a mini spoilers section on it in the next episode. Would love to hear your opinions on the twists in this movie.
Thanks for an entertaining podcast guys

    • I’m sure Rob will see it soon and we can revisit the movie with a more in-depth discussion.

I think we’re doing Game of Thrones recap/review though next week.

      • Sounds great, Ben. Looking forward to it!

  5. For some reason the podcast player shows 00:00/00:00!! I tried to DL it and open in a new window and it is all the same, What gives guys? I look forward to and listen every week and never had a prob. ANY SUGGESTIONS?? HHHHEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPP PLEEEZE!

    • Easiest fix: Subscribe in iTunes or Stitcher = Everybody wins!

That said, what browser/hardware are you on? We don’t usually have problems with the media player.

  6. Another great podcast! Always love when Hannah come on the show. Rob, I totally get your issues with MOS. I think the movie’s heart was in the right place and that’s why it makes it so difficult for diehards to admit that the film itself had flaws.

As far as the DC roster goes, I’m super pumped. WB actually might pull it off! Depending on how well BvS is, I think specialty team-ups could be the next big thing. Focusing on DC story arcs rather than standalone movies would make the whole CDC Universe more cohesive and would eliminate a lot of the issues I had with the Phase 2 Marvel films. That being said, I get why they delayed production on BvS. They need to lock down those actors for at least a good decade. Don’t want to have another GL recasting on our hands.

Now if only they could tie in shows like Arrow and Flash without it seeming too campy… that would be a real stroke of genius WB!

  7. Oh yeah, having to watch gags repeatedly and studying them before they get funny is always the sign of a quality comedy… 😉 The Dumb & Dumber To trailer was painful to watch. The movie itself might be better but the trailer didn’t have a single funny scene. I’m just not a fan of this type of lowest common demoninator humor and prefer it when comedies take a little more effort to come up with something funny instead of immediately falling back to genitalia, farting and other stuff like that. Also, humor usually works best with the unexpected. Unfortunately every joke telegraphed itself ahead in the trailer, especially the phone call one. When a joke already misfired prematurely and the character still go through the motions, as if the funny part is yet to come, then it failed miserably. Sure, some jokes take advantage of the audience already knowing what’s going to happen, but this wasn’t one of them.

  8. BoB:
    1. 22 Jump Street
    2. How to Train Your Dragon 2
    3. Think Like A Man Too
    4. Jersey Boys
    5. Maleficent
    10. A Million Ways to Die in the West

  9. The thing with Man of Steel 2 is that people will be like where is the Justice League to help out.It does make a little sense but people need to realize a stand alone is a stand alone movie. But then again if there’s going to be cameos in every movie up to MOS2 then I guess they have a right to say that.

  10. B.O.B.
    #1 22 Jump Street
#2 Think Like a Man Too
#3 How to Train Your Dragon 2
    #4 Jersey Boys
    #5 Edge of Tomorrow
#10 A Million Ways to Die in the West

  11. I don’t know if it’s been said by anyone before, but I feel that the reason Batman isn’t getting his own film is because he’ll become an ever present feature of these films. Batman will be the Nick Fury of the DCU, only he’ll be more involved in actual fighting and stuff.

Also with Shazam, I get the sense that it was heavily driven by Dwayne Johnson. I obviously don’t know all the facts but I feels like Johnson wanted to cash in on this superhero film trend and worked out something do-able with DC/WB. Shazam could, in theory work outside of the universe Man of Steel created, or possibly he could be the setup for the existance of the Greek Gods who could be ‘actual’ Gods, or just legendary meta-beings that existed a long time ago (or still do, but choose not to get involved in human affairs anymore).

  12. Avengers vs. X-Men is not the best Marvel cross over ever but it is pretty good.

I agree with Kofi Uncanny Avengers is currently one the best runs and I agree with Rob the most impressive part of Avengers vs. X-Men is all the back story and the build up before it:

On one hand you have Wanda’s journey (to be followed in Avengers Disassembled, House of M and Avengers: The Childern’s Crusade) and on the other hand you have Hope’s journey together with Cable (to be followed in X-Men: Messiah Complex, X-Men: Second Coming and Avengers: X-Sanction). All that is connected and Avengers vs. X-Men brings it together and finishes it. It pays off to read those 6 before this one.

I liked this crossover more than the one before (Fear Itself) or the one after (Age of Ultron).

@Kofi, I know you mentioned you don’t like Marvel going all cosmic, but you should check out the recent crossover Infinity. That one is really good.
