2013 Movies: The 10 Riskiest Box Office Bets

Hollywood would like for all their films to succeed both financially and critically, but the harsh reality is few films make it into the black. Some films are such risky prospects that we often wonder why the studios chose to invest so much money in them; example: in 2012 Disney invested $250 million in John Carter but the film only earned $73 million domestically - high risk, low reward.

We ran down the list of over 130 movies releasing in 2013 and picked ten that we thought are the Riskiest Box Office Bets of 2013. These are not films we think are going to fail, just ones we think have the most to overcome in order to be successful.

The list is in chronological order of release date, and along with the estimated budgets of each film, we've broken down our reasons for placing it on this list.

Going over this list, I feel like most of the films will bomb (or at least fail to make back their budget), except for Man of Steel, Lone Ranger, and possibly Oz. Call me crazy, but Lone Ranger looks like a really fun and entertaining action movie, and could be the next Pirates-esque franchise for Disney. All hail the return of Westerns!

I’m definitely seeing Man of Steel, and possibly Hangover, Pacific Rim, Lone Ranger, and Oz. The rest of them, I’ll wait for DVD/Blu-ray, or just not see them.

Wow, can we FINALLY put to rest the truly STUPID notion that an actor has to be of a certain ethnicity to play that ethnicity. It’s ACTING. We don’t cast serial killers to play serial killers. It’s annoying that this even has to be EXPLAINED, let alone explained over and over and over. It’s ACTING! They’re pretending to be something they are not, it’s ACTING!!!!!

I hear what you’re saying but for grinns, go back and read the postings when Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall or when the the rumor was that he could possibly be playing James Bond. Or read the ones from when it was announced that Jammie Foxx was cast to play Electro. I’m just say’n…

What are you talking about? Ever seen 1950s Spaghetti Westerns or other old movies in which white guys are playing Native Americans and Asians…lol.

Like gay roles…Funny how they seldom are able to find any gay actors to play gay characters…I guess there’s not many gays in Hollywood

On the other hand they used to have about four or five Asian actors playing every Asian part. I guess there’s not many Asians around Hollywood either

Serial Killer is not an ethnicity, and its not just acting, its the hollywood machine. I get your point though, why cast a native american to be himself, duuuhhhh!!!! Thats like why cast a black man to be malocolm x or martin luther king, thats so effing stupid. It’s acting, lets cast Mr.Chow from “the Hnagover to Play Malcolm X or MLK, its just acting!!!!! SMMFH!!!! Let’s cast Gabriel Iglesias to play JFK

Acting is pretending to be something someone is not, but pretending to be a different race? That’s kind of a silly argument. As the other said, there are plenty of talented Native American actors who could (and should) have played the role that would have for a significantly smaller budget. Since this film is supposed to be more Tonto’s film, it would have made a lot more sense.

Superman and OZ will be huge. Probably even the hangover 3.

The rest not so sure about.

When I first heard about Lone Ranger’s 250 million dollar budget, I thought that it was a poor decision. I still feel that way. While I think that it’s going to make back its budget due to Depp’s popularity overseas, it might not make a profit (since the total gross is shared with the theaters).

I think Man of Steel and Pacific Rim will do better this year because of a lack of similar content coming out at the same time, A problem some films this year had

How the heck is the Lone Ranger’s budget $250,000,000? Really?! I’d love to know how much it cost to make one of the original TV episodes (after scaling for inflation). It’s such an obscenely large number, especially when I consider the movie is supposed to be a “Western”, a genre that’s historically had extremely economical production costs.

I think Pacific Rim, World War Z, Oz and Movie 43, also the Hang Over 3, will get a lot of Box Office. People want to watch these movies, they will maybe watch Pacific Rim and the next day they will watch World War Z!

Movie 43 has bombed so far…lol. I have faith in Superman, Pacific Rim,and OZ. Lone Ranger to lesser extent but still do well. World War Z will fail if it is released a week after Superman.

Why in the hell would you do a remake of a perfect movie.
I’m talking about oldboy here, the movie is perfect as is. I really hope it bombs. The original movie doesn’t need a remake.

How is World War Z just now turning the slow, unorganized zombie trope on its head, a decade after the excellent (and well known) 28 Days Later movie depicted fast zombies using pack-like tactics a decade ago?

Have to say that Oz was a good prequel. It showed us a back story to Oz, the witches and how the Wizard came to be. While it was a little long at times, it was an overall good movie.

The biggest gamble here is WB’s new Superman film.. After the catastrophic Superman Returns they decided to take a new spin on Superman’s story by placing Zod and an army of robots, changing the costume to such an extreme that I think they think it’s a good new and bold look.. but in fact it just changes the character for no reason at all. I also am guessing that the robots and Zod army is a response to where the last movie people said that they’re were not enough action scenes.. Which was maybe true but you also need to stop listening to people and stay true to the icon that worked so well for decades. Makes Superman face Zod, sure but forget about a new origin and robot army..

World war Z.. CGI Zombies… Bold gamble .. may blow up in their faces..

Lone Ranger.. may work.. may just have too many “funny jokes”, like the horse in a tree, to make it a good movie.. Not a sure bet for this one either..

Included Hansel and Gretel, currently at 4.4 x production budget, and missed Jack the Giant Killer which is unlikely to exceed 1 x PB – Opps! Still I guess nobody really expected H&G to do what it did.
