With January ending today and nothing special to show for it from the film industry or box office, we take a look forward to the rest of 2011 and pick out the 20 movies we’re most excited about seeing on the big screen.

It was not an easy task, narrowing down our choices to 20 and ordering them - Just look at our complete 2011 movie guide to see the options – but we’ve done it and are left with a healthy mix of comedies, sci-fi films, comic book movies and a lot of action that will bring the hoards to the movie theaters.

So, before we look back and celebrate the best of 2010 at the Oscars, let’s look forward to Screen Rant’s Most Anticipated Movies of 2011.

20. Apollo 18

Release Date: April 22, 2011
Director: Gonzalo López-Gallego
Studio: Bekmambetov Projects Ltd, distributed by Dimension Films

The very intriguing sci-fi thriller about the mission to the moon that no one ever heard about, Apollo 18 tells the story of NASA’s mission to space in the 1970s that everyone thought was canceled. The tagline, “There’s a Reason We’ve Never Gone Back to the Moon” says it all – and at this point we LIKE the fact we don’t know much about the film beyond that.

19. Paul

Release Date: March 18, 2011
Director: Greg Mottola
Studio: Relativity Media, distributed by Universal Pictures

Written by the lovable geek comedy pair of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the story of Paul follows two geeks who meet a unique and foul-mouthed alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) and go on an adventurous road trip together, coming across a powerful cast of comedy actors including Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, Joe Lo Truglio, John Carroll Lynch, David Koechner and Sigourney Weaver. It may have limited appeal, but we here at Screen Rant are squarely in the target demographic.

18. Conan the Barbarian

Release Date: August 19, 2011
Director: Marcus Nispel
Studio: Lionsgate

Marcus Nispel’s remake of Conan the Barbarian is based on the screenplay by Thomas Dean Donnelly, Joshua Oppenheimer and Sean Hood, and follows the titular hero on a quest across Hyboria to serve vengeance against the villains who slaughtered his father and village. The question on everyone’s mind is whether or not Stargate: Atlantis star Jason Momoa can live up to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stature and become a Hollywood action star from this film. We think he’ll be a different version of the character, but might make it work.

17. The Muppets

  1. 2011 is going to be the year of the hero
    Captain America
    Green Lantern
    X Men First Class
They all look absolutely fantastic :D

    • I agree except for First ass

      • Green Lantern I think will eat-it too.

  2. tintin anyone??

    • again, how in gods name does that even qualify as a “greatly anticpated film”?

Please, anyone, someone, explain that to me, what are you runniggn here a fast food joint or a serious film site?

  3. I agree with the top5! AMERICA EFF YEA!

    • I agree with the list above in a lot of ways, but I’m with you Michael on Winnie the Pooh and Rango — my personal list would bump Fast 5 and The Muppets for these two.

  5. My Wallet is going to take a huge hit this year. Counting 6 movies that I absolutely have to see no matter what and 8 that I will consider seeing. Big year.

  6. Meh, honestly I’m not looking forward to Cpt. America…

  7. No Pirates…? :O

    • Definitely not for me!

There are like 40 other contenders that didn’t make the top 20.

  8. I am pumped to see most of the movies on the list, not so much for HP, MI, and the Hangover, and definately not for Transformers. The one I would include on the list is John Carter of Mars, add that in behind Conan.

    • John Carter on Mars will be coming out in 2012.

  9. Alex,

Your posts have been deleted and you’re banned.

    Have a nice day,

    • Dangit, I missed his posts by less than a minute!

    • Get em VIC

      • wow whose Alex? I think its like his first comment mustve been horrible lol

    • I know right?

  10. More excited for…
Winnie the Pooh, The Muppets, Hugo Cabret (I seem to be more excited for the kid films than the superhero films this year).

And Lars Van Trier’s latest depressing arty torture porn “Melancholia”, The Tree of Life, and Harry Potter.

    • Acyually, that’s the wrong definition for “Melancholia”, a better way to describe it would be “Lar’s Von Trier’s latest nillhistic venture”.

  11. My most anticipated:

    10. Sherlock Holmes 2
    9. Captain America
    8. Thor
    7. Sucker Punch
    6. Pirates of the Carribean 4
    5. Rango
    4. Kung Fu Panda 2
    3. Hangover 2
    2. Battle LA
    1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2

    • pretty much agree man…. except for the Hangover 2. Still cant see how the sequel is going to work.. especially since the first film really seemed like a one-time thing.

      • Yeah, I’m concerned how they’ll make Hangover 2 work, myself.

        • They will find a way. Zach is in this no worries :)

          • Zach was also in Due Date. Not saying it was a bad movie… but it sure wasnt as funny as it shouldve been.

            • I like Due Date more than Hangover. :)

              • I equally hated both films =)

              • No way? Ricky you surprise me.. haha :)

                • Yes way benji lmao, idk why

  12. Personally I think Thor should top that list but I get that the decision is more a patriotism thing. Though I admit I’d like to see Cap in action, nothing beats the mighty mjolnir and the effects that must follow! I’d also put Sherlock up the ladder. And did someone mention Tintin? Though like Asterix I don’t think the screen can ever do them justice, I wait in anticipation.

  13. Something tells me that with Brannagh at the helm,Thor might be the 2nd most successful movie this year after the usual Harry P (good grief!) U heard it here first, folks!

  14. like the list for the most part, don’t mean to be picky but…how can you consider Green Lantern a “lesser known DC Superhero?” maybe in the movies but hardly in the comics. I am 50 now and maybe comics have changed a bit but GL has always been huge to me anyway!

  15. “Atlas Shrugged” w/ Taylor Schilling

  16. Not bad guys order is a little off, and you’re looking too far into 2012 with the two avenger movies at 1 & 2.

    • Just looking at this year ;)

      • I meant you are obviously wwaaaaayyyy excited about the avengers movie. Just an observation.

  17. I’m kind of let down… The most I have to look forward to personally are a couple superhero flicks, Hangover 2, and Sherlock Holmes.

  18. Good list. I can’t wait to see Your Higness, that looks pretty good, and of course all of the Marvel movies. One question, is that the actual MI logo, or is it a fan made one?

  19. thor, capt, sucker punch and hangover 2 are the only ones i’m really looking forward to. the ones i’m sceptical about (might end up watching) would be GL, conan (highly unlikely though) and TF3.

  20. That mission impossible film logo looks as had as I bet the films gonna be. :)

    • Like crap?

    • I have MI:Ghost Protocol becoming a sleeper hit.

  21. WTF? I thought they just barely got the X-Men 1st class cast put together and were in mid shoot??? Even if they have just wrapped shooting, post production should be longer than 4-5 months! That and their extremely poor choice of who the X-Men are really REALLY worries me. I will commit to no more than a redbox rental now.

Looking forward to Conan, Apollo 18, Harry Potter, Sucker Punch, Cap. America, GL (maybe) and Thor. Damn, my pocketbook already is hurting!

  22. No Malick’s Tree of Life? thats my most anticipated

  23. How’s the new Big Momma’s House not on here?!?!?!?!?

  24. I’m embarrassed to admit that for next month, the movie I’m most interested in seeing is “Gnomeo and Juliet,” big Shakespeare fan that I am — unless it gets awful reviews.

    • Michael,

Call me crazy, but the last commercial I saw for that actually looked like it might be funny…

  25. “very unique”? When will you professional communicators learn basic composition?

    • ktrush,

Thanks for zooming in on ONE grammatical error in a 2,000 word article.

  26. Good list. I definitely agree with your top 3. Althoughn personlly, I’m most excited about Harry Potter, then Captain America, then Sherlock Holmes 2. I’m not really spazzing about X-men. Green Lantern, or Thor (especially Thor), – just simply want to see them like I want to see them like – wanna see The Eagle. As a big animated movie fan, I’m a bit disapointed not see some of those on here. But oh well.

P.S. Sucker Punch looks as if it is going to be the worst movie of the year. In my opinion. Also, The Hangover Part II looks just as stupid as the first 1.
