An obscure comic book movie adaptation, 2 Guns didn't exactly stand out as a high point of the Summer 2013 movie season but it's worth a watch when it hits Blu-ray and DVD on November 19th (it's currently available on Digital HD). For my money, it is a serviceable B-movie shoot-em-up/buddy throwback, with updated cultural references (Mexican drug cartels, corrupt government organizations), a commendable bromance with Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington, and even a genuinely memorable scene or two. (Who wants to play Russian Roulette with Bill Paxton?)

The Wahlberg/Washington pairing also turned out well from a studio investment perspective, resulting in 2 Guns exceeding its $61 million budget in terms of U.S. box office returns; and then, it more than doubled its cost, once you also figure in the foreign gross. Admittedly, those aren't exactly the kind of numbers that can get a sequel green-lit without a moment's hesitation, but it's enough for director Baltasar Kormákur to have discussed the possibility with Wahlberg (who also produced the film).

EW held an interview with Kormákur for next week's 2 Guns DVD/Blu-ray release, during the course of which the director offered the following update on a potential sequel:

"Yeah, [Mark and I] talked about it as a possibility, absolutely, but it hasn’t got to the stage of like, “Let’s do it.” Of course, I would love to, but that’s a financial discussion that I haven’t had. Certainly, there could be more to come from [Wahlberg and Washington's characters]. It’s a great opportunity to do that and have more fun, but if not, that’s fine."

Kormákur is currently working to make a January 2014 production start date for his next film, Everest, an adventure/thriller set around the eponymous mountain that features an impressive acting roster: Josh Brolin (Oldboy), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners) and John Hawkes (Lincoln).

Having said there, it could be fun to catch up alongside ex-DEA agent Robert 'Bobby' Trench (Washington) and former naval intelligence officer Michael 'Stig' Stigman in a 2 Guns sequel, now that the characters have more properly settled into the anti-hero niche (a popular one nowadays), after the first movie. Of course, the concern is that Wahlberg and Washington may've gotten all the mileage they can manage from their onscreen partnership already (i.e. this buddy duo might not be strong enough to sustain a Lethal Weapon-style franchise... or even a Rush Hour-type sequel, for that matter).

In addition, Kormákur wants to make a Viking film as his followup to Everest. Meanwhile, Washington is reuniting with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua on The Equalizer TV show adaptation and Wahlberg has a couple of projects lined up after he finishes working on Transformers: Age of Extinction (including a more pressing sequel, Ted 2). Hence, by the time all three players are free again, they may've lost interest in continuing the misadventures of Stig and Bobby.

How about it, readers: do you even want to see a 2 Guns sequel (let's hope it's not called 3 Guns), or should the first movie be left alone as a one-off?
